Was Destination X Too Confusing to Follow? Grade the NBC Competition Hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Yahoo4 days ago

Though he's fought off zombies for years, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is now facing something even more frightening: a group of globe-trotting reality-TV contestants on NBC's Destination X. But did the series miss the mark? Let's recap.
Tuesday's premiere takes us on a winding journey as the Walking Dead vet turns Europe into a real-life game board. Here's how it works: Each week, players will traverse the continent in a blacked-out bus with the goal of figuring out where they are. After competing in challenges at unique tourist attractions, contestants will head to the Map Room where they must guess their exact current location. The player with the guess farthest away from the bus' actual destination has to leave the game, and loses the chance to win $250,000.

But for a casual viewer, the game can be confusing. To start, you'll see contestants donning high-tech goggles from time to time, but they aren't virtual reality headsets. The eyewear functions only as a fancy blindfold — there is no VR component in this game.
Next, hints are not necessarily directly tied to the destination. For example, Episode 1 grants two contestants an exclusive clue: access to an outdoor theater. The players stand in front of the ruins, which viewers learn are the ruins of Volterra in Italy. But this place is not Destination X. We're told it sits 200 miles away from the actual location — which remains unknown to viewers. The only hint the clue offers is it looks Italian, but that offers no help in deducing the city — especially since the ruins aren't even located in Destination X anyway.
The bus continues on a journey to its official location, stopping for a team challenge, where players solve riddles to collect hidden coins offering secret clues. Morgan says the challenge takes place in Orvieto and features nods to the city's cathedral, rich olive oil and St. Patrick's well — all of which are meant to serve as additional clues for Destination X. The group didn't pick up on the hints, but even if they had, how does identifying Orvieto help anyone deduce where the final location will be? Viewers are told Orvieto is still 90 miles away from Destination X.
In the end, the team that loses the challenge must enter the Map Room, risking elimination. After all the guesses are in, it's Big Brother vet Josh Martinez who places his guess farthest from the location, placing his 'X' on Milan. On his way out, we finally learn this week's official Destination X: Rome. (Though the group had spent no actual time there.) Apparently, the prior challenge's coins had featured clues hinting at the city's gladiators and the Vatican's Swiss Guard.

Mom Dies Unexpectedly Outside of Daughter's High School Graduation: 'I Watched Her Take Her Last Breath'

A mother in North Carolina collapsed and died while walking through the parking lot before her daughter's high school graduation last week Jean Byrd is being remembered by loved ones as the "most caring person you will ever" meet The family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to "make sure she gets her last wishes" of being buried by her father in Pennsylvania A mother unexpectedly collapsed and died in a parking lot moments before her daughter's high school graduation in North Carolina. On May 23, Jean Byrd was at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C., ahead of her daughter Meilean's graduation when she died "just 200 feet" from the ceremony, her family wrote in a GoFundMe campaign description and told local NBC affiliate WXII. Marquan Matthews — Byrd's son, who was inside the venue at the time — recalled getting a phone call from his aunt about the incident, before a security guard drove him in a golf cart to the parking lot, WXII reported. He then performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Byrd died of cardiac arrest, according to the GoFundMe description, which was written by her son. "This was a curse," Matthews told WXII. "This was a curse because I sat there and watched my mom's soul lift out of her. I watched her take her last breath." "So it was very hard for me, and it's still hard for me to this day because I barely get any sleep," he added. "I just see them last few moments of my mom, just being gone." Meilean, who walked across the stage and earned her diploma from Parkland High School shortly after, had no idea what was happening at the time, per WXII. A guidance counselor was waiting for her and told her that her mother "had an accident," before Meilean was escorted out and to the hospital, the graduate told the outlet. "I thought it was like a car accident, so I wasn't really scared," Meilean said through tears as family consoled her. Three days before Meilean's high school graduation, and Byrd's death, her youngest son, Marsuan, attended his eighth-grade graduation ceremony. Matthews wrote on the GoFundMe page that his mother "had the honor of seeing him" walk across the stage at the event. He launched the family's fundraising campaign in an effort to "make sure she gets her last wishes" of being buried by her father and other family in Pennsylvania. As the son wrote, his mother — who was known as "Ma Dukes" — "shared a lot of infectious love through many years, touching the souls of the lost and being a saint to many who needed it." "We never thought that on this day, a day filled of joy, would be the worst day of our lives," Matthews continued. "As my sister was graduating high school, our mother is lying on the ground fighting for her life. As my sister is walking across the stage, I'm doing CPR on my mother. She died an hour later on my sister's graduation." Byrd, who was a "fighter," according to her son, had "a constant battle with heart issues" and previously suffered "two heart attacks." "She was so resilient and such a warrior, fighting for all her kids no matter how much pain and suffering she was in," Matthews wrote. "No matter what our mother went through, she always stayed positive and figured out a way. No matter how bad my mom was hurting, she still made people smile and feel at home in their hearts with every person who crossed paths with her." "Many lives were positively impacted by the love and resilience of our mother, and we're extending an invitation to you to help give my mom the celebration she always wanted and deserves. Mommy we love you, I'm lost without you, and I pray you give me the guidance you did once on this earth to make you proud. Rest In Paradise my beautiful lady," he concluded the note that was signed by family. Funeral services for Byrd will be held on June 14, per the GoFundMe. Read the original article on People

73 Million People Watched This Teen's Churro Explode In Her Dad's Face — Here's What Went Wrong

This week in food news, a teen is making churros for Spanish class. I know what you're thinking: must be a slow news week. I thought so too. Until I watched the video about the classic Mexican crunchy pastry with a "surprise" center — and over 73 million TikTok views (and counting). Meet TikTok user Morgan — the high schooler who just wanted to ace her school project by making homemade churros. As the video's caption stated, it was her first time making the fried dough treat. She sat her father down to try her chocolate-dipped project, stating in American-accented Spanish: "a tiempo probar los churros." Everything was going great… until her dad took the first bite on camera. Cue: the explosion. Morgan let out a startled laugh after her dad's first bite made a sound like a gunshot and bits of churro flew out of his mouth. People's hilarious reactions to the video were probably a small consolation as Morgan and her dad cleaned up the dough shrapnel. One TikTok user commented: "girl, they said assignment, not assassinate." Another commented: "Spanish project or science project?" The comments were FLOODED with more than just reactions — people were trying to figure out what happened: And a few food science-savvy chimed in with their opinions. One user argued: "The churro exploded because steam got trapped inside the dough, and the pressure blew it up when it couldn't escape. Basically, [she] made a mini pastry bomb." And yep — they're right! Churro dough contains egg, which produces steam when fried. Another comment furthered the point: "That's why churros are a star shape with lines on them and not round." If you looked closely, you can see this Spanish project is missing a key feature of most churros: the ridged edges: Turns out those little ridges on the fritters aren't just for show. They increase the dough's surface area, allowing steam to escape, which is critical to preventing what happened to Morgan's dad. Trapped hot steam doesn't just ruin the churro, it can also be dangerous. People in the comments were seriously worried about her dad — if the steam had actually burned him — so they made sure to give us an update video. In an update video, the dad said, "I took a bite and thought my head was going to blow off.... I won't be able to taste anything for at least a year... my lips are burned, but I'm not dead." Morgan laughed in reaction to the exploding churro, which could make you think it was some sort of prank. One commenter suggested foul play, saying, "I'm convinced there's a reason you didn't go first lmao." But the father was just an unfortunate snafu. In the follow-up video, the dad said, "It was a total accident. 100%. We were both in shock... She's a good daughter." People were both wildly entertained by the update on the whole debacle and incredibly relieved. No word yet on whether Morgan's exploding churros earned her a passing grade — but if viral views count, she's got an A+ in the bag! If you're suddenly craving the cinnamon-sugary street food, but don't want to suffer the same fate as Morgan, check out our churro recipes by downloading the free Tasty app and searching "churro." Our "How To Make Perfect Churros Every Time" recipe tutorial is foolproof! Ironically, we even have a "molten churro bomb recipe" — But, if it's Morgan reading this, mayyyybe wait a few weeks before trying out this recipe with your dad.

Kelly Clarkson's New Single Jumps Nearly 300% In Sales

Kelly Clarkson's 'Where Have You Been?' rebounds to No. 10 on Digital Song Sales after The Voice ... More performance, with purchases climbing nearly 300% in just days. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 22: Kelly Clarkson is seen performing during NBC's "Today" show Citi Concert Series at Rockefeller Plaza on September 22, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by Gilbert Carrasquillo/GC Images) Kelly Clarkson surprised and delighted fans earlier this month with a brand new single, "Where Have You Been?" which dropped on May 2. That tune came with little warning, and while it's not entirely clear if she has plans to produce another album anytime soon, any new work from the superstar is always welcome by her followers. While it hasn't become an unqualified smash — the kind she has scored multiple times throughout her lengthy and storied career — "Where Have You Been?" was an instant bestseller. Now, following a high-profile TV performance, the track has become a top performer again on a Billboard tally. "Where Have You Been" returns to one ranking in America this week. The single reenters the Digital Song Sales tally, the list of the top-selling tracks in the country, and it manages to reappear in the highest space. Clarkson lands at No. 10 this frame after not appearing anywhere on the 25-spot roster just a few days ago. Luminate reports that in the past tracking period, "Where Have You Been" sold a little over 2,700 copies. That's up a whopping 289% from the prior frame, when it managed just 700 sales — an increase of almost exactly 2,000 purchases in the span of only a matter of days. While Clarkson got her start on American Idol, she has since become a fixture on The Voice, another popular singing reality series. The Grammy winner performed the track on an episode of The Voice earlier this month, and that appearance seems to have had a significant positive effect on sales. Clarkson was a judge on The Voice starting with season 14 in 2018. She remained on the program for eight consecutive stints, then stepped away for a short time before returning for season 22.
