Today in Politics: Rahul Gandhi to launch MP Cong revival campaign; second phase of Ram Mandir consecration
The campaign, which had been approved by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) at a meeting in Karnataka's Belagavi in December 2024, aims to prepare the party ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh. The move is part of a larger national effort to restructure the party's state units.
On Tuesday, Gandhi will launch the campaign in Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress has been diminished since its government collapsed in 2020. The Congress suffered an overwhelming defeat in the 2023 Assembly polls, winning just 66 of the state's 234 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP swept all 29 of the state's Parliamentary seats.
'The abhiyan is being launched to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level and instill enthusiasm among party workers. We have not been in power in Madhya Pradesh for a long time,' former state party chief Arun Yadav and ex-minister Sajjan Verma said on Monday.
While in Bhopal, Gandhi will attend a meeting of the state Congress's Political Affairs Committee, followed by meetings with all party MPs and MLAs from the state, observers appointed both by the AICC and the state unit. He will also attend a party convention with members of the state committee, district and block presidents, and AICC members.
Gandhi's visit comes just over a week after the state Congress launched a pilot project in the Vidisha district to restructure the party from the grassroots level.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government is set to hold a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday in Pachmarhi to honour the legacy of tribal king Raja Bhabhut Singh. According to officials, Pachmarhi holds historical significance due to the contributions of the Gond ruler, who utilised the hilly terrain for governance, security, and the protection of cultural heritage.
The BJP has been making special efforts to commemorate regional icons recently. While the Madhya Pradesh government held a recent Cabinet meeting at the Rajwada Palace in Indore to mark the 300th birth anniversary year of famed queen Ahilyabai Holkar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31 attended a 'Mahila Sashaktikaran Maha Sammelan' in Bhopal that also honoured Ahilyabai Holkar.
Second phase of Ram Mandir consecration
The second phase of the consecration ceremony at the Ram Mandir in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya will begin on Tuesday, officials said. As a precursor to the 'pran pratishtha', a grand sacred procession was flagged off from the banks of the Saryu River on Monday.
According to an official statement, the upcoming rituals will include the consecration of idols in the Ram Darbar on the temple's first floor and in six other temples within the complex walls. The main ceremonies will culminate on June 5, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Ganga Dussehra.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to attend four key events, including the main consecration ceremony. No public invitations have been issued for June 3 to 5.
A similar three-day celebration was held on January 11, marking the first anniversary of the original 'pran pratishtha' that was led by PM Modi in January last year.
Speaker Om Birla in Brazil
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is in Brazil to participate in the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, where he is scheduled to present his views on reform of multilateral peace and security architecture.
Birla is leading the Indian parliamentary delegation for the three-day forum, which will be attended by presiding officers of parliaments of BRICS members and invited nations.
The delegation comprises Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Rajya Sabha member Surendra Singh Nagar, Lok Sabha members Vijay Baghel, Vivek Thakur and Shabari Byreddy. Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh and Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody are also part of the delegation.

Epstein investigation files, Clintons subpoenaed by House panel
House Republicans subpoenaed the Justice Department and a slew of former US officials for information about Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking operation, while his convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell fought back in federal court against making materials in her case public. This undated trial evidence image obtained December 8, 2021, from the US District Court for the Southern District of New York shows British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and US financier Jeffrey Epstein.(AFP) The developments played out from Washington to New York on Tuesday, pouring fresh fuel on a controversy that President Donald Trump and his top aides have been unable to shake for weeks. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer sent a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding the 'full, complete, unredacted Epstein files,' including information about Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in sexually abusing underage women. While Comer is a Trump ally, his hand was forced to issue the subpoena after Democrats on his committee team up with rank-and-file Republicans to vote in favor of forcing disclosure of the Justice Department records. Comer expanded on the Democratic-backed subpoena to also compel testimony from officials from prior administrations, including frequent Trump targets such as former FBI Director James Comey and President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, Trump's opponent in the 2016 presidential election. It wasn't clear what, if any, information they have on the case. Still, the subpoenas set up a potential confrontation between the Republican-led panel and the Trump administration over access to the Justice Department's investigative records. Trump and his top aides have faced a firestorm over their handling of the Epstein case, with supporters and critics alike demanding they release documents, financial records and information about Epstein's sex-trafficking operation and who may have committed crimes against underage girls. Congressional Democrats made life so politically painful for House Republicans over Epstein that Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House home early for its August break in order to avoid votes on publicly releasing the Epstein files. Democrats had repeatedly offered amendments to legislation to compel the administration to make the files public and GOP leaders halted work on major legislation. Trump has acknowledged he had a personal relationship with Epstein long ago and attended social gatherings with him but has denied knowing anything about his sex-trafficking operation. The Wall Street Journal stoked new controversy over Trump's relationship with Epstein with a story last month that said the president once sent a suggestive birthday letter to Epstein. Trump denied the story and sued the news organization. In the face of rising pressure from fellow Republicans and critics demanding more information about the case, the Justice Department has asked federal judges in New York to unseal grand jury materials related to Epstein and Maxwell. Maxwell fought back in court on Tuesday, opposing the request to unseal grand jury transcripts in her criminal case, saying she is still fighting her conviction. 'The public interest identified by the government — while understandable — is insufficient to warrant disclosure of grand jury materials at this time,' Maxwell's lawyers wrote in a legal filing. 'The government frames this interest as 'historical,' yet it is nothing more than widespread and intense public scrutiny about an ongoing criminal case.' The Justice Department has indicated in court filings that the grand jury material is very limited and probably won't shed any new light on what is already publicly known about Epstein's operation. In comparison, the department has a huge collection of documents and files obtained during the investigations into Epstein and Maxwell, including interviews with witnesses and victims. The subpoena to the department seeks all documents and communications related to seven different categories, including the criminal cases against Epstein and Maxwell and information about Epstein's death. Comer's panel gave the Justice Department until Aug. 19 to turn over records related to Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 as he faced sex-trafficking charges. A Justice Department spokesman didn't respond to a request for comment, nor did a spokesperson for the Clintons. Bill Clinton, who has acknowledged traveling on Epstein's private airplane, has previously denied knowing anything about the financier's sex-trafficking. The Justice Department is traditionally reluctant to share all its investigative files with lawmakers and has resisted demands so far to make more information about Epstein's operation public. Comer's panel already subpoenaed Maxwell for an Aug. 11 deposition. But her lawyers have demanded criminal immunity in return for her testimony and Comer hasn't agreed to the request.

Delhi Confidential: Solid support
Not all in Kerala BJP were happy about the party leadership's intervention in the matter of two Kerala nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, but state BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar was unperturbed as his move was supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, it is learnt. According to party insiders, when Chandrasekhar met PM Modi last week, the latter was very supportive of his request. Many say it was Modi's intervention that silenced any resistance within the party in Kerala as well as Chhattisgarh. The PM has repeatedly asked party leaders to woo the Christians in Kerala as a Christian-Hindu consolidation would only help the BJP emerge as an alternative in the state. The post, shared at a time when the US is threatening India with steeper tariffs over Russian oil trade and Delhi calling it 'unjustified and unreasonable targeting', has raised many eyebrows but military insiders maintain it's a 'sheer coincidence' and not related to the current impasse. For Congress' vote theft protest, Freedom Park wall demolished for ramp; BJP files complaint
1 2 Bengaluru: BJP Tuesday submitted a complaint at Upparpet police station accusing Congress of demolishing a portion of the boundary wall at Freedom Park and cutting trees to build a ramp for Rahul Gandhi's protest rally scheduled for Friday. The rally is to protest alleged vote theft during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has been preparing the venue for the protest at Freedom Park and had erected a massive stage on the covered space atop the multi-level car parking complex in Gandhinagar. BJP alleged that a portion of the park's compound wall was demolished to make way for a ramp and claimed videos have surfaced of chopped trees and branches being carted away on trucks. Sapthagiri Gowda, BJP's Bengaluru Central district president, said in the complaint that organisers did not obtain permission from relevant authorities before demolishing the wall, which amounts to damaging public property. A separate complaint was submitted on tree-felling. Shashikumar, BBMP chief engineer (west zone), said he was unaware of the development. "I will have to verify with the executive engineer," he said. Meanwhile, although deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar had earlier directed authorities that no political banners — not even those belonging to Congress — should be allowed within city limits, a stretch from Sheshadri Road to KR Circle was lined with towering hoardings featuring Shivakumar himself, chief minister Siddaramaiah, and senior Congress functionaries including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. The banners were erected as part of a rally on Friday by Rahul and other senior Congressmen to protest alleged vote theft during the Lok Sabha elections. Suralkar Vikas Kishor, BBMP commissioner (West Zone), confirmed no formal application was received to put up the banners. "We will identify persons or agencies behind this and fine them regardless of political affiliation," he said. "There is no provision to place any type of banner in Bengaluru's public spaces." Under BBMP's recently notified Advertisement Bylaws 2024, banners and cutouts are allowed only in select zones based on road width. The situation has sparked criticism of possible selective enforcement of rules. Several residents voiced concerns over the visual clutter and suggested motorists were at risk. "It's hard to ignore these massive portraits while driving," said one commuter. "If these are illegal, why aren't they being removed?"
