Today in Politics: Rahul Gandhi to launch MP Cong revival campaign; second phase of Ram Mandir consecration

Indian Express2 days ago

Days after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) appointed district observers to oversee the party's organisational revamp in Madhya Pradesh, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is set to lead a series of meetings in Bhopal as part of the Congress's 'Sangathan Srajan Abhiyan (Organisation Rejuvenation Campaign)' on Tuesday.
The campaign, which had been approved by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) at a meeting in Karnataka's Belagavi in December 2024, aims to prepare the party ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh. The move is part of a larger national effort to restructure the party's state units.
On Tuesday, Gandhi will launch the campaign in Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress has been diminished since its government collapsed in 2020. The Congress suffered an overwhelming defeat in the 2023 Assembly polls, winning just 66 of the state's 234 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP swept all 29 of the state's Parliamentary seats.
'The abhiyan is being launched to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level and instill enthusiasm among party workers. We have not been in power in Madhya Pradesh for a long time,' former state party chief Arun Yadav and ex-minister Sajjan Verma said on Monday.
While in Bhopal, Gandhi will attend a meeting of the state Congress's Political Affairs Committee, followed by meetings with all party MPs and MLAs from the state, observers appointed both by the AICC and the state unit. He will also attend a party convention with members of the state committee, district and block presidents, and AICC members.
Gandhi's visit comes just over a week after the state Congress launched a pilot project in the Vidisha district to restructure the party from the grassroots level.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government is set to hold a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday in Pachmarhi to honour the legacy of tribal king Raja Bhabhut Singh. According to officials, Pachmarhi holds historical significance due to the contributions of the Gond ruler, who utilised the hilly terrain for governance, security, and the protection of cultural heritage.
The BJP has been making special efforts to commemorate regional icons recently. While the Madhya Pradesh government held a recent Cabinet meeting at the Rajwada Palace in Indore to mark the 300th birth anniversary year of famed queen Ahilyabai Holkar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31 attended a 'Mahila Sashaktikaran Maha Sammelan' in Bhopal that also honoured Ahilyabai Holkar.
Second phase of Ram Mandir consecration
The second phase of the consecration ceremony at the Ram Mandir in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya will begin on Tuesday, officials said. As a precursor to the 'pran pratishtha', a grand sacred procession was flagged off from the banks of the Saryu River on Monday.
According to an official statement, the upcoming rituals will include the consecration of idols in the Ram Darbar on the temple's first floor and in six other temples within the complex walls. The main ceremonies will culminate on June 5, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Ganga Dussehra.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to attend four key events, including the main consecration ceremony. No public invitations have been issued for June 3 to 5.
A similar three-day celebration was held on January 11, marking the first anniversary of the original 'pran pratishtha' that was led by PM Modi in January last year.
Speaker Om Birla in Brazil
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is in Brazil to participate in the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, where he is scheduled to present his views on reform of multilateral peace and security architecture.
Birla is leading the Indian parliamentary delegation for the three-day forum, which will be attended by presiding officers of parliaments of BRICS members and invited nations.
The delegation comprises Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Rajya Sabha member Surendra Singh Nagar, Lok Sabha members Vijay Baghel, Vivek Thakur and Shabari Byreddy. Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh and Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody are also part of the delegation.

BJP MLAs Jayanarayan Mishra and Irasis Acharya, separately praised the Mohan Charan Majhi-led govt for what they termed as "widespread development" across the state. "This has been a historic year for Odisha," said Sambalpur MLA Mishra, emphasising significant initiatives for farmers and women's welfare, during a media interactions on the anniversary of party's election victory in Odisha. Bhatli legislator Acharya said the govt and BJP would present detailed report cards showcasing its "glorious performance" across various sectors. "How can they celebrate so-called successes when their own documents reveal systemic failures?" he asked. The political face-off comes exactly one year after BJP's victory in the assembly election, marking the end of BJD's long tenure in power.

Police station in-charge's vehicle stolen in Tripura's Bishalgarh, triggers row

Unidentified people stole a vehicle belonging to the Bishalgarh women police station in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Monday evening, right in front of a crowd of onlookers, prompting criticism from the CPM that the ruling BJP's 'tactics of using anti-social elements to suppress the Opposition voices' had got out of hand. The Mahindra Bolero, belonging to the police station in-charge, was learnt to have been parked near an old fuel station in the area when it was stolen. Eyewitnesses said two people reached the area riding a scooter, quickly snatched the keys of the Bolero, shoved the driver out and fled with the parked vehicle. Two more people arrived in a van. A local shopkeeper described the sequence of events and said the entire act happened so swiftly that by the time the police arrived—about five minutes later—the men had vanished. A woman, who was also a witness to the theft, shared her dismay and shock at such a daredevil crime in public. Hours later, two people were stabbed and robbed of Rs 11.5 lakh in the Rastarmatha area under the Bishalgarh rural development block on Tuesday. Sagar Miah, a resident of Matinagar in the area, said he and his father Harej Miah were on their way back home with the money they sold a plot of land for when a gang of three people attacked them with knives, injured him and his father badly, and fled with the money. Incidents of robbery, snatching, theft, petty crimes, stabbing etc have been on the rise in parts of Bishalgarh recently. On Tuesday, Inspector General (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak visited the area where the police vehicle was stolen. 'We are trying to track the criminals. In the incident of robbery, the victim is hospitalised. We are trying to verify all sources. Once all information is available, an FIR will be registered and culprits will be identified. On the theft of the police vehicle, we have started naka checking everywhere. When the culprits are caught, we can say for certain who were behind this,' he said. Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma told reporters that the police were also looking at the source of the money claimed to have been stolen. 'Usually, people don't keep such huge amounts of cash. They have given some clarification on how they got the money from cattle sale, paddy sale and money sent by a relative staying in Qatar, but the amount of money still doesn't add up,' Debbarma said, adding that Sagar Miah's claim that he might go abroad if he gets necessary permissions and that he needed the money for that purpose was also not entirely convincing, either. Meanwhile, CPM Bishalgarh subdivisional secretary Partha Pratim Majumder said the proverbial genie had got out of the bottle now, blaming the rise in such crimes on the BJP's alleged use of anti-social elements against Opposition parties. BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya termed the allegations 'baseless'. They (CPM) don't have anything to say. They try to concoct stories. We don't have anything to do with anti-socials. History stands testimony to the fact that the CPM does politics with the support of anti-socials. Communists have sympathised with Naxals recently and members of that party fraternise with anti-socials at the local level. The police will act freely (in Tripura),' he said. IG Ipper Manchak said the pattern of crimes was changing as urbanisation and prosperity increased in the state. 'Earlier cattle thefts used to occur. That pattern is no longer the same. Police are working on this new pattern. Police will have to change tactics. If there is any individual or criminal organisation behind it, we have to go deeper. This is nothing out of control. Thirty per cent of property crimes have come down since last year. Cybercrime is one of our main priorities now. That is many times higher than this. All incidents will be followed by detection and punishment,' he said. Despite the crimes reported in close succession to each other in Bishalgarh, the official defended the overall law and order situation. 'Crime is coming down across the state including in Bishalgarh. Especially property-related crimes and NDPS cases are under control,' he said.
