Mamdani's social media savvy comes at a cost
The pro-Cuomo super PAC chose the former. It did not succeed.
'Fix the City's negative paid ads against Mamdani could have been more successful if there had been a viable third or fourth candidate in the race to steer anti-Cuomo votes to. But particularly in the final weeks, it was very clearly Mamdani vs. Cuomo,' the consultant said. 'This made the PAC's attacks on Mamdani less impactful, because whatever concerns voters had about him — and a lot of Mamdani voters had concerns — he still wasn't Andrew Cuomo.'
Epstein, Mamdani's creative director, said the campaign was able to reach vast numbers of voters at a fraction of the cost of broadcast spots, with video shoots typically costing in the low four-figures. In the month before the primary, Mamdani's Instagram content was viewed 236 million times, with 62 percent of those viewers not previously following him.
More recently, right-leaning news outfits and influencers have been picking up where Fix the City left off.
A 2020 interview with The Far Left Show has spawned multiple reports in the New York Post and other outlets. In the spot, Mamdani told the hosts 'the abolition of private property' would be preferable to the current housing crisis and, when asked whether prisons are obsolete, he responded 'what purpose do they serve?' The Washington Free Beacon cited a separate 2020 interview where Mamdani says police officers shouldn't be the ones to respond to incidents where someone 'is going through domestic violence.' And Fox News reported on an old tweet that showed Mamdani directing his middle finger toward a statue of Christopher Columbus.
The efficacy of the latest barrage of negative stories, however, appears limited: They are coming out during the doldrums of summer, just as Mamdani is riding high after his decisive primary win and gaining powerful institutional allies. The articles are appearing in outlets, with the exception of the New York Post, that have little sway in New York City elections. And while Mamdani's past positions have in some cases been expressed more crassly than he would want to convey them as mayor, they are not too far afield of his core ideology to alienate voters.

Texas AG to investigate O'Rourke-linked group amid map row
Texas has launched an investigation into Beto O'Rourke's Powered by People group in connection to Democrats who fled the state over the weekend. File Photo by Kevin Dietsch/UPI | License Photo Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday launched an investigation into potential Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke over allegations that he "bribed" Democratic state lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State to prevent Republicans from passing GOP-favorable congressional maps that critics say strip power from voters of color. Paxton announced the investigation amid a deepening row between the state's Democrats and Republicans. The state's minority Democrats fled Texas over the weekend to deny Republicans the quorum needed to certify the controversial maps. The state's Republican leadership has responded with threats of arrest and to vacate their congressional seats if they don't return by Friday, as well as investigations into anyone who solicits funds to support their effort. Paxton said Wednesday that he is investigating the O'Rourke-led Powered by People, which is reportedly covering the costs of Texas Democrats who fled the state. He also said the Powered by People group may have violated bribery laws and state laws, such as those governing campaign or officeholder contributions and expenditures, coercion of a public servant and abuse of office. "Any Democrat coward breaking the law by taking a Beto Bribe will be held accountable," Paxton said in a statement announcing the investigation. "These jet-setting runaways have already lost public trust by abandoning our state, and Texans deserve to know if they received illegal bribes to do it." The new maps, if certified, are expected to give Republicans five additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of next year's midterm elections. Critics and Democrats argue that the maps draw lines that dilute the voting power of Latino and Black people, while serving as a power grab by President Donald Trump through rigging the GOP representation in the House. Democrats have widely supported their Texan colleagues' actions to prevent quorum. Republicans have viewed the move as a shirking from their responsibilities. O'Rourke has been traveling throughout several swing states, including Missouri, Wisconsin, Indianapolis, Nebraska and others, trying to generate grassroots support for the Texas Democrats. In response to the investigation, O'Rourke accused Paxton of hypocrisy. "The guy impeached for bribery is going after the folks trying to stop the theft of five congressional seats," he said on X. Paxton was impeached by the state House but was acquitted of all corruption charges by the Senate. The Republican attorney general has vowed that he will seek "aggressive legal action" against any Democrat who is not present at the House on Friday, while Abbott has called for their arrests.

No Alzheimer's Drug for Old Men?
Increasing evidence shows that anti-amyloid Alzheimer's treatments can slow disease progression and give patients years more of quality time with loved ones. So will the Trump Administration at long last drop the Biden rules that restrict access to these medicines? Two studies presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference last week show that the benefits of amyloid-clearing monoclonal antibodies by Eli Lilly and Biogen-Eisai grow over time. The drugs slowed cognitive decline in clinical trials used for Food and Drug Administration approval by some 25% to 36% over 18 months. In follow-up studies, these benefits doubled at three years for Lilly's treatment and roughly quadrupled over four years for Biogen-Eisai's. That's great news for patients.

TV Superman Dean Cain is recruiting immigration agents and, thanks to DHS, so is ‘South Park'
Dean Cain played a superhero on TV 30 years ago. Now he wants to help the government in its illegal sweeps of Home Depot parking lots, schools and bus benches for people who appear to be immigrants. Cain played Superman in the 1990s TV series 'Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.' On Tuesday, he encouraged his Instagram followers to apply for a job within the ranks of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE. 'Here's your opportunity to join ICE,' he told followers in a video.'You can earn lots of great benefits and pay. Since President Trump took office, ICE has arrested hundreds of thousands of criminals including terrorists, rapists, murderers, pedophiles, MS-13 gang members, drug traffickers, you name it — very dangerous people who are no longer on the streets.' Clearly, Cain is still fighting fantasy villains because nonpublic data from ICE indicate that the government is primarily detaining individuals with no criminal convictions of any kind. Of the 200,000 people detained by ICE since October 2024, 65% have never committed a crime, and 93% haven't committed a violent crime. But he wasn't the only player from series TV to end up in a recruitment post for the Department of Homeland Security. On its X account, the DHS pulled an image from a 'South Park' teaser for the show's forthcoming episode 'Got a Nut.' It showed masked men riding in black cars marked 'ICE.' The DHS added its own caption: ' The show's last episode, 'Sermon on the Mount,' mercilessly lampooned the president's manhood and penchant for vengeance-driven lawsuits. Trump responded by calling the animated comedy 'irrelevant,' though its searing indictment of the president represented the show's highest-rated season opener since 1999. Paramount Global reported that viewership was up 68% from the previous 'South Park' season premiere and was the top show across cable on July 23. The episode reached nearly 6 million viewers across Paramount+ and Comedy Central platforms in the three days after it aired. A 20-second teaser of Wednesday's 'Got a Nut' episode shows Trump at a dinner event with Satan. As Trump's courage is heralded by an off-screen speaker, the president rubs Satan's leg under the table. Satan tells him to stop. Even the devil is disgusted. It also appears 'South Park' will be focused on ICE recruitment or, rather, the absurdity of the administration's public call to arms. 'When Mr. Mackey loses his job, he desperately tries to find a new way to make a living,' reads the caption about 'Got a Nut' on 'South Park's' X account. It's accompanied by a screenshot of the oft-misguided former school counselor Mackey looking out of sorts in a face mask and ICE vest. He stands near a characterization of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who vamps in ICE gear and points a pistol in the air. On Tuesday, 'South Park' responded via X to the DHS usage of an image from the forthcoming episode. 'Wait, so we ARE relevant?' followed by a hashtag we can't reprint here. Satire around MAGA's inhumane immigration policy has ramped up after the Trump administration launched an ICE hiring campaign, promising a $50,000 signing bonus and retirement benefits. 'Your country is calling you to serve at ICE,' said Noem in a news release last week. 'Your country needs dedicated men and women of ICE to get the worst of the worst criminals out of our country. This is a defining moment in our nation's history. Your skills, your experience, and your courage have never been more essential. Together, we must defend the homeland.' Cain's signature show has been off the air as many years as 'South Park' has been on, but Tuesday he decided it was time to slip on the virtual unitard one more time, imagining himself a superhero as he took to social media and said: 'For those who don't know, I am a sworn law enforcement officer, as well as being a filmmaker, and I felt it was important to join with our first responders to help secure the safety of all Americans, not just talk about it. So I joined up,' said the 59-year-old. A follower replied: 'Unfortunately, you can't join ICE if you're over 37 years of age — even if you're a fully licensed state law enforcement officer.' Cain replied: 'Perhaps we'll get the changed…' Mere hours passed, then viola! Noem announced during an appearance on Fox News that ICE's hiring age cap had been eliminated. And faster than a speeding rubber bullet fired at an ICE protester, Superman extended the dream of state-sanctioned kidnapping to the young and old.
