
Volleyball teams undergo intensive training sessions

SIPITANG: The boys' and girls' Under-12 volleyball teams selected to represent Sipitang district are undergoing intensive morning and evening training sessions for one week, starting from April 22, at the Sipitang District Council (MDS) volleyball court. Sipitang District Education Office (PPD) Volleyball Technical and Sports Development Officer (PTPS) for Under-12, Pauline Anthony Sigar said the training covers technical skills, drills, tactics and friendly matches in preparation for the state-level volleyball championship which will be held at the Ranau Sports Complex Hall from May 4-8. She added that the boys' team is coached by Shahrudin and Hafiz, while the girls' team is coached by Mirza and Ammi, assisted by Pauline herself and Azwandy. Faxtive athletes shine at Sabah Masters Open Championship

Kota Kinabalu: The Faxtive Athletics Club (FXAC) of Labuan, affiliated with the Federal Territory of Labuan Athletics Association (POWPL) had a successful outing at the recent 13th Sabah Masters Athletics Open Championship held at Likas Stadium. The 37-member team represented by athletes from FXAC and POWPL finished 10th overall out of the 40 teams taking part in the two-day event. Advertisement They took home a total of 35 medals consisting of eight golds, 15 silvers and 12 bronzes. Jessica Suip was the toast of the team by setting a championship record in the women's 3,000m (age 35–39), clocking an impressive 22 minutes and 33.25 seconds to clinch the gold medal. The other gold medal winners were Allan Chin Ah Fatt (men's 800m 70-74), Cecilia Ang E Chen (women's 3,000m walking race 60-64), Chong Su Kim (women's discus throw 70-74), Jenny Han (women's shotput 80-84), Masry Ali (men's 1,500m 45-49), Nourince Patrick (women's 3,000m 60-64) and Roslina Abdul Kassim (women's 3000m walk race 35-39). The silvers were delivered by Allan Chin Ah Fatt, Amilisah Laisang, Chong Su Kim, Jenny Han, Junainah Azaman, Liew Mui Chin, Masry Ali, Noor Sofiah Raidin, Nur Aishah Pelagia, Poh Shiow Mei and Stella Josiris, while the bronze medals came from Amilisah Laisang, Cecilia Ang E Chen, Chong Su Kim, Japar Idris, Nur Aishah Pelagia, Poh Shiow Mei, Roslina Abdul Kassim and Tsen Chew Moi. In a joint statement from POWPL president Lee Khiat Kim and FXAC president Heng Jik Siang on Sunday, they commended the team led by Misliana Shafie, Jennifer Julius and Rosni Aliskah as managers. They said the athletes' outstanding performance and success reaffirmed their hard work, discipline and unwavering spirit amidst intense regional competition. They also thanked JK Sports, Rumah Asap, Edran Yeo and other generous sponsors for their support. Meanwhile, Heng extended the club's appreciation to all the athletes, coaches, managers, and to POWPL for their unwavering support. 150 compete in PBS golf tournament

Kota Kinabalu: More than 150 players participated in the Open Golf tournament organised by PBS N56 Tanjung Papat division in collaboration with Ezy Kopitiam and Syarikat SBG at the Sibuga Golf Club in Sandakan recently. The one-day competition held in conjunction with the 68th Merdeka Day celebration also offered attractive lucky draw prizes including a motorcycle in addition to the main winning prizes. Advertisement Organising chairman and division deputy chief Nelson Sikin, who is also Sandakan Municipal councillor, said the tournament not only helped to strengthen the bonds among the community, it also indicated PBS' commitment to continue reaching out to the people through sports and community activities. The closing ceremony was officiated by PBS Acting President and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, who is also Local Government and Housing Minister. SKA karatekas bag 2 golds, a silver, 2 bronzes

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) finished ninth overall in the club category at the 2nd Asian Youth Open Championship cum Training Camp hosted by Asian Karate Federation and organised by Chinese Karate Association in Linping, Hangzhou, China from August 12-16. Despite sending only a six-member team, they managed to win two golds, one silver and two bronzes in the five-day event. At last year's meet held in Wuhan, China, SKA was represented by 19 athletes and finished seventh in the same category with one gold, five silvers and four bronzes. The gold medallists this year were Neyo Chai Xiao Le (Under-14 male kata individual) and Danish Rayyan Rajis (cadet male kata individual). The only silver came from Al-Zovainz Zurizal (cadet male -63kg), while the bronze medals were delivered by Muhammad Farish Danish Mohd Saidin (junior male -61kg) and Putra Rayn Nazwan Heryzuan (junior male -55kg).
