Viljami Sinisalo reveals ruthless Celtic plan is right on track as numbers point to Kasper Schmeichel inevitability
Sinisalo is prepared to be patient as he knows his turn as Celtic No1 is only a matter of time
Viljami Sinisalo insists his plan to dislodge Kasper Schmeichel and become Celtic 's first choice keeper is right on track.
The former Aston Villa shot stopper deputised for the Great Dane while he was out injured towards the end of last season, donning the gloves for his Old Firm derby bow against Rangers at Ibrox.
He also plays second fiddle with Finland to Lukas Hradecky, but has made it clear his ambition is to usurp Schmeichel while on international duty with his country.
Sinisalo said: "Kasper has one year left on his contract. I have four. We are proceeding according to plan. I am 15 years younger than him.
"Hopefully next season I'll get more minutes. I'll just try to play as well as I can when the opportunity arises. We'll see what happens.
"Kasper is an excellent guy. He supported our team well and gave us tips when he was out with an injury. We are a good team together.
"Every footballer wants to play. However, I knew that in front of me was an experienced top goalkeeper who is, so to speak, coming to the end of his career.
"And that I am the young goalkeeper who is more of a project behind him. There must be some patience from me.
"But the plan is to be the first-choice goalkeeper at Celtic one day and hopefully that will open doors for me here on the national team as well."
Sinisalo impressed during his spell as Schmeichel's replacement, which included an Old Firm game at Ibrox
He said: "Even though the end of the season was disappointing because we didn't win all three trophies, I enjoyed it
"I played seven of the last ten games. I'm quite happy with what I achieved towards the end of the season.
"I got to experience what it's like to be a Celtic goalkeeper and I got to play in the match that won the league.
"I lifted that trophy with a slightly better conscience because I had played a part in winning it myself.
"And it was cool to experience the game at Ibrox. There were a few nerves before the game - 95 per cent of the crowd were home fans, every one of whom hates you.
"I will definitely remember the experience forever."

Transfer news LIVE: Chelsea submit bid to sign Gittens, Liverpool make £113m Wirtz offer, Inter inquire about Hojlund
Tottenham released a lengthy statement explaining their decision to dismiss manager Ange Postecoglou: FOLLOWING a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the Club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month - an achievement that will live with us all forever. We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw. However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season. At times there were extenuating circumstances - injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph. It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision. We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future - he will always be welcome back at our home. News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.

Celtic hero says Scotland shouldn't be worried about World Cup qualifiers after Iceland defeat – players ARE good enough
Nobody expected Friday night's result, but one ex-Scot has sympathy for the national team 'NOT MAKING EXCUSES' Celtic hero says Scotland shouldn't be worried about World Cup qualifiers after Iceland defeat – players ARE good enough Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SCOTLAND fell to a shock 3-1 defeat to Iceland on Friday night, but one ex-Scotland international doesn't think it's time to worry. Angus Gunn pulled up injured in the sixth minute, and substitute goalkeeper Cieran Slicker was forced to replace him. Credit: Willie Vass The Ipswich stopper was brought on for his first cap, but it was a night to forget for the 22-year-old. The keeper was at fault for all three of the visitors' goals, with boss Steve Clarke admitting after the match he wasn't ready. John Souttar scored Scotland's only goal, with George Hirst having the ball in the net on his first start, only for VAR to intervene and rule it out. Lennon Miller also debuted for his country, and looked promising, but on the whole it was a night the whole squad will wish to quickly forget about. Despite the performance and result, ex-Celtic hero Peter Grant insists that the match is nothing to worry about. He told Sky Sports: "I'm not worried because of the players we have, you know, there's no doubt of that. "The performance wasn't great we all know that, we all seen that, but it's a very difficult time of year, and I'm not making excuses. "As you say you've had guys on such a high with winning things and then coming back into play friendlies. "I mean it's not as if you're playing against an England or whatever and it's enthusiasm that sometimes rubs off the support, your talking about Iceland, and that's no disrespect because i thought they played very well, "I thought their goalkeeper was as good a passer as I've seen in football for a long time. Celtic fans would never let their club die says Hoops hero Peter Grant "I'll hold fire on the criticism because I think it's a difficult time of year and it always has been. "We've just got to see how we progress, but I've got a great belief in the group of players that they have there. "They know they've got a talented group and we know they're more than capable than what they showed last night." Scotland travel to Lichtenstein on Monday night, and Clarke is looking to add to his goalkeeping department after losing Gunn and Kilmarnock's Robby McCrorie. Celtic-bound Ross Doohan is expected to be called up to the squad, and he could make his first appearance for the Tartan Army. Elsewhere in the squad, Clarke has stated he isn't one for experimenting, so we can expect a another tried and tested Scotland side for Monday evening's friendly.
