
New UPI rules from August 1: Cap on checking bank balance on UPI, Auto payments during fixed hours
In present times, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has become the most popular medium of digital payment in India. Scores of people use UPI daily not only for making payments, but also choose it for checking balance, paying subscription fees, paying EMI and even bill payments.
But from August 1, 2025, some new rules are going to be implemented for UPI users. These changes are being made by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to make digital transactions more secure, streamlined and effective. These are the new rules which will affect common and business users.
Limit for checking balance
According to the new rules of NPCI, from August 1, 2025, UPI users will be able to check their balance only 50 times a day. That is, you can withdraw your bank account information through UPI app only fifty times a day.
Why was this rule introduced?
NPCI says that some users check the balance repeatedly, which puts excessive load on the network. Due to this, sometimes the UPI server slows down or goes down, causing other users to face difficulty in making transactions.
This limit is sufficient for a common user, but for big traders, e-commerce sellers or freelancers who receive payments continuously, it can be like a prevention.
Time slots will be fixed for AutoPay transactions
Till now, payments like auto debit payments i.e. EMI, Netflix/OTT subscription, electricity-water or mobile bills were processed at any time. But from August 1, these payments will be made only in the prescribed time slots.
What will be the benefit of this?
The purpose of this rule is to reduce the delay in transaction processing and system load. Due to millions of transactions happening at the same time, the pressure on the system increases.
Fixed time slots will balance the load on the system, and UPI transactions will be faster and more secure.
Where will it affect?
• Auto debit users will have to keep track of their payment timing • If there is a mistake in the slot, the payment may be delayed to the next day
• Some subscription services can inform users about the slot by giving notifications themselves

With rising incomes, improving financial literacy, and increasing digital penetration, the next wave of mutual fund investors will likely come from these regions. However, challenges remain. Despite the progress, financial literacy levels in smaller towns are still lower than in metros. Misinformation and a lack of trust in financial products can deter potential investors. Metrowater: Pay using official methods only
Chennai: Metrowater has urged residents to pay their water and sewerage tax only through officially authorised methods. This follows complaints of payments being demanded through unauthorised channels by people posing as Metrowater staff. Officials from Metrowater said several residents receivedcalls which instructed them to pay their pending water and sewerage tax dues through UPI apps to numbers linked to private bank accounts. In many cases, the callers threatened to disconnect water connections if consumers failed to pay immediately. The board clarified that it does not authorise such practices and warned residents to remain cautious. Consumers can pay in person at any of the 15 area offices or the head office. They can scan QR codes displayed at official collection centres. Authorised personnel also carry iPoS machines.
