GST reforms: In a matter of good news for residents of India, the central government is expected to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates for most of the consumer goods and services as announced by PM Modi on Independence day, 2025. As per media reports, the central government is planning a major GST reform by reducing the current four tax slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) to just two – Merit and Standard. As a part of the reforms, the central government is expected to reduce GST rates on several items in the 12% and 28% tax slabs. GST reforms: What products will become cheaper?
If the GST reforms are announced, daily essential consumer products like cookware, snacks, soap and hair oil may become cheaper, while electronics such as mobiles, TVs, and refrigerators could see tax relief under the 18% slab. Along with daily essentials, big-ticket items like cement, cars, and ACs may also cost less, making home-building and big purchases easier. Apart from these items, the long-awaited reduction of GST rates on insurance premiums may drop, offering further savings. What PM Modi said on GST reduction?
Signaling sweeping changes in the rates of Goods and Services Tax (GST), PM Modi said, 'This Diwali, I am going to celebrate a double Diwali for you. The countrymen are going to get a big gift, there will be a drastic cut on GST on common household items'.

As a result of the announcement of upcoming GST reforms in the country, the Indian stock market ended the session in green on Monday after heavy buying in sectors like auto, banking and consumer durable stocks, a report by news agency IANS said. In a positive development for Indian Stock market, the Sensex closed at 81,273.75, up 676.09 points or 0.84 per cent.

India won't initiate normalisation of ties, onus on Pakistan: Shashi Tharoor
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said India will no longer take the first step in normalising relations with Pakistan, citing a long history of 'betrayals' and urging the neighbouring country to demonstrate genuine intent by dismantling terror networks operating from its soil. Speaking at the launch of 'Whither India-Pakistan Relations Today?', an anthology edited by former ambassador Surendra Kumar, Tharoor said that any future dialogue depends on Pakistan's willingness to crack down on terror outfits. 'Given Pakistan's record, the onus is on them,' Tharoor said. " Why can't they shut down these terror camps? Everyone knows where they are. The UN even lists them.' Citing past Indian outreach efforts from Nehru's 1950 pact with Liaqat Ali Khan, Vajpayee's 1999 Lahore visit, to PM Modi's surprise 2015 stopover, Tharoor said all were followed by hostilities or terror attacks. Referring to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, he noted that India had shared 'overwhelming evidence' of Pakistani involvement, but 'not one mastermind has been prosecuted'. He said India showed restraint then, but repeated provocations led to actions like the 2016 surgical strikes and 'Operation Sindoor'. Tharoor also dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's claims of brokering peace post Operation Sindoor. 'It was the strikes on May 9-10 and the successful interception of Pakistani missiles that led to their DGMO calling for a ceasefire, not Trump,' he said.

Seafood exporters seek Centre's help
Bhimavaram: The Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) has appealed to the Central government for financial assistance, stating that the industry is facing a severe crisis due to a recent 25% tariff imposed by the United States. A delegation led by Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Bhupatiraju Srinivasa Varma met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Parliament on Tuesday to submit a memorandum. The delegation included SEAI President Pavan Kumar, CEO Dr Raghavan, National Committee members I Gangaram and Poojitha, along with MPs Sana Satish Babu and Beeda Masthan Rao. According to Pavan Kumar, the new 25% tariff, combined with existing countervailing duty (CVD) and anti-dumping duties, has burdened Indian exporters with an additional cost of nearly 35%. This has led to a drastic decline in exports to the US and threatens the livelihoods of an estimated 2.8 crore people, including fishermen, farmers, and processing unit workers. India is the world's second-largest seafood exporter, with exports reaching $8 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24. The US market alone accounts for 25% of this total. The SEAI expressed concern that the new tariffs would severely impact exports to the US, affecting not only exporters but also millions of aqua farmers, processing and packaging workers, and transport personnel. It is estimated that around 25 lakh people nationwide will be directly or indirectly affected by this crisis. To overcome the crisis, the SEAI has submitted several proposals to the government. They urged the government to provide soft loans at a low interest rate (below 5%) to exporters, similar to the relief provided during the COVID-19 pandemic, extend export-related credit facilities for all seafood exporters for up to 240 days, offer 8% financial assistance on the FOB (Free On Board) value of exports to the US and an additional 2% assistance for exports to other countries, and announce special financial aid for small and medium-sized aqua farmers to protect them from losses. The SEAI is hopeful that implementing these measures will help the industry stabilise and protect the livelihoods of the 2.8 crore people dependent on it. Pavan Kumar stated that the finance minister listened attentively to their concerns and assured them that the government would review the situation and take appropriate action. Pavan Kumar stated that they also met Andhra Pradesh Minister for Human Resources Nara Lokesh, who was currently in Delhi, and submitted a memorandum requesting measures to protect the industry. The meeting, which took place under the leadership of Union Minister Bhupatiraju Srinivas Varma, was also attended by Union Minister for Civil Aviation K Rammohan Naidu and MPs Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu and Ganti Harish. Since Andhra Pradesh accounts for the largest share of aqua product exports, the representatives appealed to both the central and state governments to take immediate, coordinated action to save the sector. Minister Nara Lokesh assured them that he would bring the issue to the attention of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and work towards a suitable solution.
