Malaysia household debt at RM1.65 trillion in Q1 2025

The Sun29-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's household debt stood at RM1.65 trillion as of the end of March 2025, equivalent to 84.3 per cent of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP).
However, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying highlighted that the value of household financial assets exceeds the total debt, indicating that the public's overall financial position remains strong.
'Household debt should be viewed alongside household financial assets, which are significantly larger.
'On aggregate, household financial assets continue to exceed debt by 2.1 times, providing a solid buffer for households,' she told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Lim was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang), who inquired about the debt-to-GDP ratio.
She said that regarding household debt, the government and Bank Negara Malaysia are always committed to assisting credit users who face financial difficulties.
In response to the original question posed by Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar), who asked whether the government has regulatory plans for credit services to ensure stronger consumer protection, Lim said that loans approved by financial institutions are subject to the Policy Document on Responsible Financing.
This document was issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and has been in effect since 2012.
Lim explained that through the implementation of this policy document, the debt service ratio (DSR) for households remains within prudent levels, with the median DSR for outstanding loans at 34 per cent, while the median DSR for newly approved loans is 41 per cent in 2024.
'The DSR maintained within these prudent levels serves as an adequate buffer for households to meet their debt obligations,' she said.
Meanwhile, Lim said that the Credit Counselling and Management Agency (AKPK) also provides advisory services and assistance in financial management and loan restructuring.
The deputy minister added that AKPK has successfully helped more than 64,000 borrowers fully settle their loans through its Debt Management Programme, while nearly 270,000 participants remain actively engaged in their financial recovery journeys under this programme. - Bernama

Lack of platform barriers linked to LRT incidents involving PwDs

KUALA LUMPUR: The lack of platform barriers at Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations has been cited as a major factor in accidents involving passengers, especially persons with disabilities (PwDs). Transport Minister Anthony Loke explained that older LRT stations were built without physical barriers between platforms and trains, unlike newer Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations. 'Prasarana is now reviewing proposals to install barriers between platforms and tracks to reduce risks,' he said in the Dewan Rakyat. He acknowledged that retrofitting barriers at older stations would be costly and time-consuming due to redesign requirements. Loke was responding to a supplementary question from Khairil Nizam Khirudin regarding safety gaps after a visually impaired man died at Wangsa Maju LRT Station in February. For now, auxiliary police have been deployed at high-risk stations to enhance vigilance and assist PwD passengers. The government is also upgrading accessibility features, including lifts at older KTM stations, to improve inclusivity. Rail operators are training frontline staff to provide professional and empathetic assistance to PwD commuters. Loke addressed these measures in reply to Syerleena Abdul Rashid's query on public transport accessibility improvements for PwDs. - Bernama

Plans To Restructure EPF Pension Payout Plan Won't Affect Current Withdrawals

A proposed restructuring of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts will introduce a monthly pension-style payout mechanism, but it will not affect the withdrawal rights of existing members, said Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying. She said the initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), is intended to ensure that members' savings last longer throughout retirement, in line with increasing life expectancy. 'The new structure will take effect once members reach the minimum retirement age. Their savings will be split into two main components: flexible savings, which can be withdrawn at any time based on members' needs and income savings, which will be disbursed regularly or monthly until fully utilised. 'This proposal aims to strengthen retirement income security and support more sustainable financial management,' she added. Lim clarified that the monthly payout mechanism will apply only to new EPF members registering after the new mechanism comes into effect. However, she noted that existing contributors may voluntarily opt in to the new structure if they choose. 'The proposed restructuring of EPF accounts will introduce a new mechanism allowing part of members' savings to be allocated specifically for regular income during retirement,' she said during a Dewan Rakyat question-and-answer session on Thursday. She was responding to a supplementary question from Mordi Bimol (PH-Mas Gading), who had asked about the rationale behind introducing monthly pension-style payouts as part of the 13MP.

Over 10,000 Bumiputera engineering graduates in 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 10,000 Bumiputera engineering graduates were produced by public universities last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said a total of 10,342 Bumiputera students graduated with first degrees in engineering in 2024, compared with 10,274 in 2023. In the field of architecture, 3,781 Bumiputera graduates were recorded in 2024, up from 3,327 the previous year. "The ministry always prioritises the production of professional graduates in strategic sectors such as engineering, architecture, education, law and accountancy, in line with national development goals," he said in reply to a question from Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (PN–Indera Mahkota). On professional certification, Mustapha said titles such as Ir. (Professional Engineer) and Ar. (Professional Architect) are overseen by their respective regulatory bodies, the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM). "These certifications are optional and pursued individually through professional training, industrial assessments, examinations and qualifying periods following graduation," he said. As of 2024, 16,223 Bumiputera engineers held the Ir. title, out of 35,760 certified professionals nationwide. In 2023, there were 15,668 Bumiputera engineers among 34,384 professionals, he said. For the field of architecture, LAM data showed 1,056 Bumiputera professionals out of 2,062 certified architects this year. In 2023, there were 1,036 Bumiputera professionals out of 2,545. He said Bumiputera professionals are also represented in various high-impact fields, including medicine, dentistry, law, accountancy, pharmacy, chemistry, actuarial science, quantity surveying, psychology, digital technology, education, nursing, counselling, and occupational safety and health.
