85 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 85?
The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast.
Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 86 since the inaugural season in 2002.
Texans players to wear No. 85
No. 85 currently belongs to rookie wide receiver Daniel Jackson. The Cal product is a long shot to make the final 3-man roster, but he impressed in several drills during minicamp and OTAs.
With Jackson being a rookie, he can't be the best player in franchise history to wear No. 85, though the pickings are slim despite two decades of experience.

Walter might be the better player, but he switched over to No. 83 after the 2006 season. Dreessen, one of the better blocking tight ends, helped Houston go from a bottom-dwelling offense under Gary Kubiak to an AFC South champion before departing after the 2011 season.
In five seasons, Dreesen caught 105 passes for 1,323 yards and 13 TDs. His best season came in 2010, when he totaled career-highs in receptions (36), receiving yards (518) and yards per reception (14.4). His back-to-back promising campaigns led to a payday with the Denver Broncos in 2012.
And don't worry about Walter. He's about to show up later this week on the list.
Schultz with a solid season will likely take over this spot in 2026, but Gaffney's role as a No. 2 receiver in the early stages of the team's tenure. Gaffney never took over games and was constantly dealing with injuries, but he averaged 42 catches over four seasons. He also finished with seven touchdowns and averaged 13.8 yards per attempt.

Shane van Gisbergen wins NASCAR Mexico City Cup inaugural in a dominant display
Shane van Gisbergen remained a ringer in NASCAR Cup Series inaugural events with left and right turns, winning in the circuit's debut at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. The Trackhouse Racing driver qualified for the playoffs with his second career victory, leading the final 33 laps in his No. 88 Chevrolet and easily outdistancing Christopher Bell by more than 17 seconds. It was the first Cup win for van Gisbergen since the New Zealand native won in his series debut — the inaugural 2023 street race in Chicago. Chase Elliott finished third, followed by Alex Bowman and Michael McDowell. John Hunter Nemechek, Chase Briscoe, Cole Custer, William Byron and Chris Buescher rounded out the top 10. Ty Gibbs finished 11th despite leading three times for 27 laps as a midrace caution burned the No. 54 Toyota, which had elected to stay on track longer than van Gisbergen during a green-flag cycle. Gibbs was in 11th when the race restarted on Lap 69 of 100 but was unable to make progress and began slipping. The race was slowed by six caution flags but ran green for the final 33 laps as the skies cleared from a threatening forecast that affected the first half of the race. The inclement weather arrived just after the green flag, beginning a day filled with strategy gambles and predictions based on the radar. The caution flew on Lap 1 when the rain began, allowing for teams to make competitive pit stops for wet-weather tires. Chris Buescher and Austin Cindric elected to stay on track with slick tires, but they were both gobbled up quickly on the restart. Buescher fell from first to 16th within few laps, and Cindric dropped to 10th. Their freefall was stemmed by a yellow flag for Kyle Busch, who lost control on Turn 1 entry of the seventh lap. His crash collected seven other drivers, including Kyle Larson (who fell more than 30 laps down with damage). 'Just in the rain, and I went down into 11 and got on the brakes pretty hard,' Busch told Marty Snider on Pime. 'Everything was fine, everything was comfortable, stopped really good. And I'm like, 'OK, I can be a little more aggressive getting into 1,' and I figured it was going to be fine, and as soon as I went to the brakes, it was like being on ice, and I was just sliding. 'About a second and a half or so, I was trying to figure out which direction to go, and I was like, 'I've got to turn this thing around backward, because I'm going to nail some people.' Hate it for all those involved in my mishap. Hate it for RCR, ECR. The car in qualifying was really good, and I felt we were going to be really sporty in the dry. I hate that the rain came, and now it's nice and dry. Just have to go fight for more points in another week.' At the front, the battle began between van Gisbergen and Gibbs, who swapped the lead while choosing to pit just before the end of the first stage. They traded the lead twice again after the Stage 2 restart on Lap 25. Their strategies split at the end of the second stage, though, as Gibbs elected to pit for four tires with two laps remaining while van Gisbergen stayed on track to win the stage and gamble that a nearby shower might force everyone into the pits again while he was leading. The rain held off, though, and Gibbs was able to rally from 15th to fourth over the first 10 laps of the last stage while van Gisbergen battled for first with Bell before settling into a lead of nearly 5 seconds. The Cleveland Browns ended the Nick Chubb era this offseason in a pivot that let fans know what they thought of the running back's prospects. Chubb will turn 30 in December, and he'll do so with an injury history that took away his 2023 season and made his 2024 campaign an underwhelming blip on the radar. Advertisement It wasn't a surprise that the Browns elected to let Chubb walk, nor was it a shock to see few teams line up to sign him. Ultimately, Chubb found a new home with the Houston Texans, who signed him to a one-year, $2.5 million deal on Monday. In Houston, he'll find newfound hopes of playoff football, his first franchise quarterback since the flashes of Baker Mayfield, and a second chance to prove he can still hang, regardless of his medical baggage. In gauging what to expect from the former Browns running back, it's best to start with his health. Chubb tore his knee up early in the 2023 season, demanding surgeries to repair his ACL, meniscus, and MCL. Upon his return in the middle of 2024, Chubb was middling, averaging 3.3 yards per attempt. His longest run went for 19 yards. Advertisement By December, he was hurt again, breaking his foot in Week 15. The veteran is currently slotted behind Joe Mixon on the Texans' depth chart. He'll have to look the part in the summer to stave off Dameon Pierce and fourth-round rookie Woody Marks. 'That's all behind me,' Chubb told reporters. 'Injuries happen, With what I did, it takes about two years to really get back. So, I'm over the hump. I'm back home, I was back home all offseason training where I trained every year since I was in high school. I was able to get a full year in of doing the things I do best. Now, I'm feeling as good as I have been in a long time.' If Chubb is healthy, there's likely a role for him in the backfield, particularly in short-yardage situations. Marks' draft capital and Pierce's 2024 struggles could extend that leash, and with enough potency, Chubb could eat into a real portion of Houston's carries as the second back on the roster. Advertisement That job isn't particularly secure. Between his own injuries, others' ascensions, and the chance that he performs as he did in 2024, Chubb may fall out of the rotation entirely, too. Simply put, Texans fans need to see what Chubb looks like this summer. He has elite vision, footwork, and contact balance helping to sustain his skill set, but his age and medicals are pressing concerns that may cost him the benefit of the doubt. Cleveland will not play Houston in the 2025 regular season, but Browns fans will be pulling for him wherever he plays.
