Reutersa day ago
August 4 - Defensive tackle Zach Sieler agreed to a three-year, $67.75 million contract extension with the Miami Dolphins, ESPN and NFL.com reported on Sunday.
The contract reportedly includes $44 million in guaranteed money.
Sieler, 29, is a seven-year NFL veteran who began his career with the Baltimore Ravens. He joined the Dolphins in 2019, and he had a breakout campaign in 2023, recording 10 sacks.
Last season, Sieler continued his high-level play, posting 55 combined tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and one forced fumble. Pro Football Focus gave him a 78.6 overall grade, ranking him 12th among 219 qualifying interior defenders.
Zieler is now set to become the highest-paid defensive player on the Dolphins and ninth-highest paid defensive tackle in the league by average annual value.

Report: Toronto FC acquiring M Djordje Mihailovic from Rapids

August 4 - Toronto FC are making a splash by acquiring star midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids for an $8 million transfer fee, GiveMeSport reported Monday. The Rapids, in the thick of the playoff hunt, did not want to move Mihailovic at first, but the U.S. men's national team player requested they approve Toronto's bid, per the report. The $8 million fee would mark a club record for Colorado. There is a reported $1 million in add-ons and a sell-on percentage tied to the deal. Mihailovic, 26, is headed to his fourth MLS club. He joined the Rapids ahead of the 2024 season after time with the Chicago Fire (2017-20), CF Montreal (2021-22) and the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar (2023). Mihailovic has nine goals with seven assists through 24 matches (all starts) this season, on pace to break the career highs of 11 goals he set last year. In 187 career MLS matches, Mihailovic has recorded 40 goals and 21 assists. He has also made 11 appearances for the USMNT, scoring one goal. Toronto (5-13-6, 21 points) sits in a distant 12th place in the Eastern Conference, 14 points out of the ninth and final playoff spot. Colorado (8-11-6, 30 points), meanwhile, holds ninth place in the West. --Field Level Media

Astros 3B Isaac Paredes (hamstring) chooses rehab over surgery

August 4 - There will be no surgery for Isaac Paredes after he suffered a "significant" hamstring strain last month. Instead, the Houston Astros third baseman will rehab with the hopes of returning for a potential World Series run. Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters that Paredes, 26, received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection and will need to undergo a "long period of letting it rest" before he can begin exercising again. "In his whole opinion on this, he wants to work hard to try and get back this season," Brown said before Houston's game against the Miami Marlins on Monday. "Of course, he's going to dedicate himself to getting back." A two-time All-Star, including this season, Paredes has missed the past 14 games after suffering the injury on July 19 in Seattle. After seeking multiple opinions on the best course of action, Paredes chose to rehab -- especially after some suggested he undergo surgery, which could carry a recovery time of at least six months. While Brown did not specify the grade of strain Paredes suffered, he emphasized that the injury was "significant" and "enough that it could require surgery if he wanted it." "I'm optimistic because he's dedicated to coming back from this severe hamstring strain," Brown said. "That gives me some optimism. I think he is watching what's going on here and he wants to be a part of it. I think he's going to work his tail off to try and get back." As the Astros prep for their 113th game of the regular season, the team holds a 2 1/2-game lead for the American League West. Paredes leads Houston with 19 home runs while batting a career-best .259. With him sidelined, however, the Astros brought back Carlos Correa, who made the switch from shortstop to third base. The team also obtained Ramon Urias to further bolster the position. --Field Level Media

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders doesn't want Deion at camp

August 4 - Shedeur Sanders is attempting to focus on the job in front of him at Cleveland Browns training camp rather than a potential visit from his famous father. After Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado coach Deion Sanders said in an interview that his son asked him not to visit him at camp, the younger Sanders explained why on Monday. "I don't want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me," Shedeur Sanders told reporters. "I don't want him to come and see me get a couple reps, and he is cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I got to get to where I'm going, and I know it's a lot I got to do to get there. "It's kind of like I just want everything that I'm doing is just focus on this time, and I don't want no distractions because we know how the media, we know how everybody would take it and take away from the team, just from him being my own dad showing up. So, it is a gift and a curse at the same time." Shedeur Sanders experienced a precipitous fall in the draft after he was widely expected to be selected in the first round as one of the first quarterbacks off the board. He wasn't even the first QB selected by the Browns, who chose Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round before adding Sanders in the fifth (144th overall). Now Sanders is battling Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Gabriel for reps at camp. Sanders is the only one who has yet to receive first-team reps. Some speculated that Sanders' fall was the result of bad advice he received from his father, who was his coach at Jackson State and Colorado, and that NFL teams would not want Deion Sanders' specter looming over their operation. Deion did visit Shedeur's brother Shilo at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' training camp. But he is also dealing with a full plate: He had his bladder removed due to a tumor earlier this year, and his Buffaloes are a few weeks away from their 2025 season opener. "It was something that we really ain't even have a formal conversation about because, it was like, 'Y'all need to focus on what y'all can focus on. Can't sit here and feel sorry for me, and then that's affecting y'all doing that,'" Shedeur Sanders said. --Field Level Media
