Alphabet's Google said on Thursday it had resolved a brief global service disruption on its platforms that affected multiple services such as music streamer Spotify and instant messaging provider Discord.
"The issue with Google Chat, Google Meet, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Cloud Search, Google Tasks, Google Voice has been resolved for all affected users," the company said.
"We will publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation."
The outage disrupted services on platforms such as Spotify, Snapchat and Discord that rely on the tech giant's cloud managed services and infrastructure.
Google Cloud's dashboard said engineering teams were working to resolve a few services still seeing some residual impact.
The outage began around 1:50 p.m. ET and there were 14,729 reports of Google Cloud being down in the U.S. around 2:32 p.m. ET, according to tracking website Downdetector.com.
At the peak of the disruption, there were about 46,000 outage reports on Spotify and 10,992 on Discord in the U.S. As of 6:18 p.m. ET, Spotify showed a little over 1,000 reports, while Discord outages had come down to 200.
Downdetector's numbers are based on user-submitted reports. The outage might have affected a larger number of users.

AI's success must be measured in economic impact, not benchmarks: Satya Nadella

The true metric of success of artificial intelligence (AI) must be measured in terms of its economic impact and real growth in global gross domestic product (GDP), said Satya Nadella, chief executive, Microsoft. '…the ultimate measure for me always is not some AI benchmark, it is the GDP growth in the real world that means it's the growth in a firm. And that's, I think, where we're seeing absolutely real evidence that this is scaling,' he said in a conversation with Ali Ghodsi, founder and chief executive, Databricks, at the company's annual conference in San Francisco on Thursday. When asked about drawing the line between AI hype versus real value add, Nadella outlined how AI should serve as an amplifier of existing enterprise investments.'If the new technology somehow builds on the investments they've already made and compounds the effects for them, then that is a true value-add.'Nadella reflected on the acceleration in AI development across pre-training, inference, and application maturity over the last two years. 'It's the compounding effects of all the S-curves, right? There is the pre-training S-curve, and then there is now the test time compute S-curve. There is just the application tier getting a more mature S-curve… It's that combination that's been pretty stunning to see,' he said. He also described how human-AI interaction is progressing beyond conversational AI toward operational automation.'We started by saying, wow, I can now have intelligence that I can chat with. Then we said, oh, we can assign tasks to the intelligence, and now we effectively can have digital coworkers.' Nadella emphasised the enterprise-wide usage of AI agents along with tools like GitHub Copilot and Databricks connectors. 'You are now getting to a place where it's become standard issue… every employee inside the enterprise is able to either manage agents, create agents, orchestrate agents in order to create that next level of automation around them.' The two companies announced a multi-year extension of their decade-long partnership for the Azure Databricks cloud platform. Parallelly, Databricks also announced a new product partnership with Google Cloud to make the latest Gemini models available within Databricks' platform to build, deploy, and scale AI agents. (The reporter was in San Francisco at the invitation of Databricks).

Google shares 'mini incident report' on outage that disrupted services of Spotify, OpenAI and others: We are deeply sorry for ...

Alphabet's Google Cloud suffered an outage earlier today, disrupting services across multiple platforms, including Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, OpenAI among others. According to the downtime started around 1:50 p.m. ET (11:20 PM) and there were 14,729 reports of Google Cloud being down in the U.S. around 2:32 p.m. ET. Google Cloud acknowledged the outage and also resolved the outage. Issuing a fix for the same, the company said 'The issue with Google Chat, Google Meet, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Cloud Search, Google Tasks, Google Voice has been resolved for all affected users'. It has now published a mini incident report of the incident. Google says 'We are deeply sorry for the impact to all of our users and their customers that this service disruption/outage caused. Businesses large and small trust Google Cloud with your workloads and we will do better. In the coming days, we will publish a full incident report of the root cause, detailed timeline and robust remediation steps we will be taking. Given the size and impact of this incident, we would like to provide some information below.' According to the Google Cloud status webpage, the outage lasted 3 hours. Here's the timeline shared by Google (All Times US/Pacific) Incident Start: 12 June, 2025 10:49 All regions except us-central1 mitigated: 12 June, 2025 12:48 Incident End: 12 June, 2025 13:49 Duration: 3 hours Regions/Zones: Global What Google's 'mini incident report' says on recent outage As stated on Google Cloud status page, the mini incident report says: Multiple Google Cloud and Google Workspace products experienced increased 503 errors in external API requests, impacting customers. From our initial analysis, the issue occurred due to an invalid automated quota update to our API management system which was distributed globally, causing external API requests to be rejected. To recover we bypassed the offending quota check, which allowed recovery in most regions within 2 hours. However, the quota policy database in us-central1 became overloaded, resulting in much longer recovery in that region. Several products had moderate residual impact (e.g. backlogs) for up to an hour after the primary issue was mitigated and a small number recovering after that. Google will complete a full Incident Report in the following days that will provide a detailed root cause. The company further added that it will take the following measures to prevent future recurrence: Prevent our API management platform from failing due to invalid or corrupt data. Prevent metadata from propagating globally without appropriate protection, testing and monitoring in place. Improve system error handling and comprehensive testing for handling of invalid data. Instagram to Finally Let Users Rearrange Profile Grid, Test ‘Quiet Posting' Feature

Instagram is set to roll out a major update that gives users more flexibility in how they showcase their content. Among the highly anticipated features is the ability to rearrange posts on a user's profile grid — a function that has long been requested by the Instagram community. Until now, Instagram profiles have strictly displayed posts in chronological order, with only a limited workaround offered through pinned posts. The new update will allow users to freely reorganize photos, videos, and reels on their profile grid. Whether for aesthetic appeal or to spotlight certain content, the change offers creators and casual users alike more control over the visual story they present on their profiles. The feature has been years in the making. Initial signs of testing were observed back in 2022, but the project was shelved before gaining renewed interest. Earlier this year, Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed that the platform was revisiting the concept. The company has now officially announced that the functionality will soon be made widely available. In addition to rearranging posts, Instagram is also testing a new 'quiet posting' feature. This option lets users share content directly to their profile without pushing it to followers' feeds. The goal is to ease the pressure that sometimes comes with sharing publicly. 'Creative expression can feel intimidating, especially when posting something to feed. We want to make it easier for people to share content without feeling the need to perform for an audience every time,' Mosseri explained in a blog post. This feature could be particularly helpful for users who want to maintain a personal archive or post more freely without the pressure of engagement metrics like likes or comments. Instagram is also expanding its Notes feature. In the upcoming update, users will be able to share the music they're currently listening to on Spotify directly through Notes. This real-time music sharing adds another layer of personal expression, allowing friends to connect over shared tastes in a more casual setting. Further, Instagram teased a new initiative aimed at supporting emerging creators, although the company has not yet released full details about the program. The move underscores Instagram's broader strategy to empower smaller creators and remain competitive in the evolving social media landscape, especially with rivals like TikTok and YouTube Shorts gaining traction. The upcoming set of features signals a clear shift in Instagram's focus toward user customization, creative freedom, and reduced performance anxiety. With the ability to rearrange grid posts, quietly share content, and integrate musical preferences into daily updates, the platform is giving users more tools to express themselves in their own way. As Instagram works to retain its massive user base and attract new audiences, these thoughtful changes may play a key role in enhancing user satisfaction and creativity.
