Friday briefing: Wayne Rooney hits back at ‘very unfair' Tom Brady

Leader Live2 days ago
There has been plenty of movement in the transfer window with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest lining up moves.
Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'.
Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which launches on Friday.
NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November.
Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well.
'But what he does understand is – he's a hard worker – we know that.'
Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.'
Newcastle have agreed a fee for Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old is due to travel to the north east for a medical after a deal in the region of £40million was agreed, the PA news agency understands.
The prospective sale of Ramsey, who has made 167 appearances at Villa Park, will represent pure profit for Villa, who are walking a UEFA financial fair play and PSR tightrope and need to sell.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have agreed a £30million fee for Manchester City's James McAtee and a club-record £37m deal for Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson.
We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat.

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out says players may think twice about taking penalties in future after Tottenham's Mathys Tel received online racist abuse.
France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain.
A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new.
'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met.'

The Premier League returns with champions Liverpool kicking off the new campaign against Bournemouth.
It is sure to be an emotional night at Anfield as the club pay tribute to Diogo Jota following the forward's tragic death in the summer.
A host of managers will face the media, with Pep Guardiola, Ruben Amorim, Thomas Frank and Enzo Maresca among those speaking.

Bruno Fernandes reveals warning to any Man Utd stars who 'step out of line'

Bruno Fernandes feels that the standards at Manchester United have risen and now players who 'step out of line' face consequences and will have problems. The Red Devils get their new Premier League campaign underway on Sunday as they host Arsenal at Old Trafford in the standout fixture of the opening weekend. It is a huge test for Ruben Amorim's new-look side as they try to vastly improve on finishing 15th in the top flight last season. There have been big changes at the club over the summer, with Amorim now boasting an entirely new forward line of Matheus Cunha. Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. There has also been work on outgoings, which continues to be done, as Marcus Rashford has left for Barcelona on loan, while negotiations to get rid of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony ongoing. Fernandes feels there has been something of a reset on culture and attitude under Amorim, admitting that standards had slipped and players knew they could get away with not meeting expectations. He says that is no longer the case and anyone not hitting the heights required under Amorim know they will face the consequences. 'The atmosphere in the pre-season tour was very good,' the Red Devils captain told Sky Sports. 'It was something the team probably needed, also for the ones who just came to the club. I can say that you feel a different atmosphere. 'We are all in the same path, in the same line. We know what we want from the season, where we have to go. We know the line we have drawn for ourselves and if someone steps out of that line, they're going to have consequences. 'I think that's a very important thing because in the past, we probably thought that even if you step outside the line a bit, you'll be okay. But now we've spoken, not only the manager, but the players have also spoken. We've said what is the minimum standard that we need and whoever steps out of this will have problems. Not only with the staff, but also with the teammates.' Amorim has created as six-player leadership group within his squad, which includes Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Tom Heaton. Explaining his thinking behind the group earlier this summer, Amorim said: 'It's not just Bruno, it's not just Harry, it's six guys now. They are responsible for the group. There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with that. 'I said to them in this year, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. You are responsible. All these small changes, I think it's helping the group. 'We have Bruno, we have Licha, we have Harry, we have Diogo, we have Tom and we have Nous. So it's not just the oldest ones. Nous is in the group because he's a character that I like. And I try to understand the dynamic of the group and try to reach every space. They are the guys that are responsible to keep everyone in line.' Fernandes expanded on this, saying that the six players were picked as they can influence every area of the squad. More Trending 'If you create this group of six players who can get into every small group in the dressing room, because it's normal to have more bond with some people than others, that will happen not only in football but in life,' said the Portuguese talisman. 'So, the way the manager chose the six players is that he knows he can get to every spot in the dressing room to get the best out of everyone. 'Obviously, everyone in that group has different ways of leading, different ways of dealing with problems. It was something I was doing in the past, but probably it gets to a point where my voice gets a little tiring for them, with always the same one talking. Having another five players with me talking and saying things will make things different.' Amorim will be without two of his leadership group on the pitch on Sunday, with Mazraoui and Martinez out with injury, the former likely to be back at the end of this month, while the latter will not return until October, most likely. However, there was better news on the injury front as goalkeeper Andre Onana is available after missing much of pre-season with a hamstring problem and Joshua Zirkzee is also fit. Transfer news LIVE: Spurs make huge Eze breakthrough; Man Utd revive Baleba deal; Isak to Liverpool; Arsenal

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are pressing on in their attempts to sign new players and make a strong start to the new Premier League season. Tottenham look set to make a splash in the market in coming days, amid reports Eberechi Eze has been left out of the matchday squad for Crystal Palace's season opener at Stamford Bridge. He is thought to be closing in on a move to Spurs, who are also eyeing a deal for Savinho.

Transfer news live: Spurs near Eze breakthrough in blow for Arsenal, Man United latest

Tottenham are hoping to pull off a £55m deal for Eberechi Eze after taking the lead over Arsenal in the race to sign the Crystal Palace winger. Eze is reportedly likely to miss Palace's Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday as negotiations ramp up over his future, with Spurs keen to add to their squad after James Maddison's injury and Son Heung Min's departure. With a fortnight left of the summer transfer window, it is one of the biggest deals still left to be resolved. Manchester United have spent big on new forwards and may rival Manchester City for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma – although the Old Trafford club have ended their pursuit of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. They will need to make some sales with Jadon Sancho being targeted by Besiktas and Roma, Antony wanted by Benfica and Chelsea interested in Alejandro Garnacho. Liverpool, meanwhile, have signed teenage defender Giovanni Leoni as they hope to bolster their defence. The club also remain in talks with Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi and the London side may want to cash in before his contract expires next summer. The Reds still hold an interest in Alexander Isak, who was absent from Newcastle's opening weekend draw at Aston Villa on Saturday, but they will need to spend big money to secure him.
