Outlander fans divided over 'lukewarm' love story as they slate key character

Richard Rankin's portrayal of Roger Wakefield has caused a stir of controversy among book fans of Diana Gabaldon's hit franchise as they all said the same thing.
It's the dreaded wait looming over all Outlander fans, as the eighth and final season will mark the end of an era. Of course, the spin-off show Blood of My Blood will still ramp up some excitement.
And for those who have been avid followers of the hit franchise based on Diana Gabaldon 's best-selling books, many fans have been taking the time to re-watch old series of Outlander or share their thoughts. Some of which has caused debate among the fanbase.

One fan sparked up a widely-agreed opinion on Roger and Brianna's romance. Those in particular who have read the books have been left 'disappointed' at actor Richard Rankin taking on the role of Roger, and his lack of chemistry with Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton).

Taking to discussion platform Reddit, one fan voiced: "I really don't like Roger. I've tried to feel otherwise, but I can't haha. ever since he proposed to Brianna and said all those 1940's typical things about how a woman should live her life and what not, I simply can't like him.
"I feel like everything he has done is not enough for me. at the same time, yes he travelled through the stones for Brianna and was beaten almost to death by Jamie, sold and enslaved by the Mohawk, returned to Brianna but see.. he still did some things that are just enhancing my disliking of him. has anybody else felt or feels the same?"
Other fans soon rushed to the post in agreement, with one quipping: "I feel like my dislike for him in both book and show is I the fact that I just don't like him as a match with Brianna. That pairing is like lukewarm dirty dishwater to me," which was upvoted over 60 times.
One fan responded, "Yeah I'm still not on board that ship after several seasons, even when my dislike of him disappeared." Another voiced, "book Roger is so much better than show Roger. The writers did him wrong. He does improve over time."
"I like him in the books but not the show. Same with Brianna," another fan quipped as one agreed chiming, "I agree. I'm not crazy about Roger but I really dislike the TV Brianna character. Considering how she came about, you'd think they'd have invested more into her."

Someone else added, "I agree. Love them in the books. Not so much in the show. Part of my dislike is the writers did them wrong," as another bluntly put, "I hate him in the show, he's a bit less annoying in the book but honestly he bores me to death."
One person noted, "the other part is that the actor who plays Brianna is just not good. She has very little range for her voice and expressions. It just takes me out of the scene."

Another voiced, "I haven't read the books, but the show characters just don't feel like they have any real chemistry between them. It kinda felt like they ended up together because they were written that way, not because they're a good fit together. Like, the scene with her and Bonnet in his cell before his supposed hanging felt more emotional than any scenes she had with Roger."
However, it wasn't all negative as one fan mused "I used to feel that way. I thought I'd hate him forever. I stopped hating him the past 2 seasons and actually started liking him, but I still cannot and will not ship him with Bree for that exact reason. I've also been through enough droughtlander that these seem like forever ago, so maybe that contributed to my softening view."
"I love book Roger," someone else quipped. "I think Rik Rankin does a great job playing him, but TV Roger is nowhere near the man book Roger is (same with Jamie). Book Brianna is ok, but TV Brianna is awful, and TV Brianna and TV Roger is a terrible mismatch. The rest of the show is cast so well, its a bummer Brianna is such a big part and Sophie is just so wrong for it."

Shooter game loved by 10 MILLION is closing in days – fans warned they'll have to pay for an upgrade to keep playing

AN ONLINE shooter game played by 10million at its peak will disappear from two popular consoles in a matter of days. Developers behind the title want to focus on newer platforms, meaning it will shut down on some older devices. The game in question is The First Descendant a free-to-play multiplayer online role-playing looter shooter. It first burst onto the scene last July on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. But almost one year on, and Xbox One and PS4 owners will be shut out. Advertisement Producer Beom-Jun Lee said the move was going ahead with "much reluctance". But studio Nexon says it was needed to make the game even better with its next "mega season update". There is one reassuring bit of news to come out of the shake-up. Affected players can carry over their account details to any of other platform, so they need not lose everything. "They shouldn't have even bothered with PS4 support to begin with then," another wrote. Mum-to-be slammed for naming her baby girl after global disaster because ‘it sounded nice'

Plus, the exact reason why the name is not appropriate NAME SHAME Mum-to-be slammed for naming her baby girl after global disaster because 'it sounded nice' EVER heard a name that left you completely gobsmacked? A post on Reddit has gone viral after a woman shared a baby shower invite, which revealed the name planned for an unborn baby. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 The mum-to-be wanted to name her baby Chernobyl Hope Credit: Reddit Traditionally, parents share the name of their child after it's been born, rather than beforehand. This is usually down to superstition, but also to avoid scrutiny and negativity over the chosen name. Posting in the group r/tragedeigh, the Redditor said: "I'm speechless... "Welp.. I just got invited to a baby shower…" The invite read: "Please join us for a baby shower. Join us to celebrate the upcoming arrival of a little bundle of joy. "In honour of Chernobyl Hope." The time and place was redacted but the invite concluded with: "We can't wait to celebrate together." Someone replied: "I refuse to believe this is real lol." But the original poster added: "I have a feeling they don't know what Chernobyl meant. I asked them where they got the idea from and said it just sounded nice????" Another was unconvinced: "This has to be fake. There's no way this is real." But the OP doubled down: "Imagine my shock when I received the invite." The OP later explained how the parents of Chernobyl wanted their daughter to be known by the nickname 'Cherry'. I'm called 'selfish' for giving my baby a 'ridiculous' name - trolls say she won't get a job & slam my son's moniker too "I'll let you guys know when I have an update. This invitation was sent in a group chat and was also personally sent to me,' they added. 'I just can't believe they would name a baby girl Chernobyl. I'll gather enough courage to tell them my thoughts.' One comment read: "This has gotta be a top ten worst names posted in the sub." Someone else felt the baby name was finally suitable for the Reddit thread and said: "FINALLY! a child named after a LITERAL tragedeigh!" One person hoped the parents-to-be could be convinced to change their unborn baby's name: "Thankfully it's just the baby shower; there's still time for someone to talk sense into them." But another thought the name wasn't that uncommon: "I worked with a lady named Chernobyl. She went by Che." The struggle of choosing a baby name CHLOE Morgan, a Senior Writer at Fabulous, has revealed her dilemma on choosing a baby name... At 35 weeks pregnant, by far the trickiest part of pregnancy for me in the past few months (minus the insomnia and countless night-time wee breaks!) has been trying to decide on a baby name. The dilemmas are endless... My partner and I went for a private scan to find out the gender as early as we could - partly due to the fact we thought it would make baby naming so much easier because we'd only have to come up with a list of names for one gender rather than two. How wrong we were... I was absolutely thrilled to be told I was expecting the baby girl I'd already dreamed of, but being one of the last of my friends to fall pregnant, I've had countless conversations over the years with excited pals discussing their top baby which I wish I could go back in time and un-hear. With each friend mentioning at least 10 possible monikers, I can't help but feel like several are now a no-go even though I know it's something that none of them would mind in the slightest - it's a total me problem! The debate comes up time and time again on social media forums - can you choose the same name that was a "potential" for a friend's baby? It's a very divisive topic and opinions are always I don't want to be THAT person. While some will argue there's thousands of other names out there to choose from, others will say you need to choose YOUR all, there's no guarantee that person will even have another baby. Then there's also the issue of finding a name you to research it online and read one negative comment amongst hundreds of positives that you just can't shake off. I made that very mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won't reveal it because I don't want to ruin it for others!) ...only to see someone point out that it constantly gets autocorrected on a phone to something rather rude instead. So, back to the drawing board we went.. Just five weeks to go and it looks like our little one is going to be known as 'baby gal' for a little while longer! "Kid is going to think it's cool that she was named after a show and then find out the origins of her name, lol," a Redditor remarked. What is the meaning behind 'Chernobyl'? The word Chernobyl refers to the Chernobyl disaster which was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, in the Soviet Union. 3 View of the Chernobyl Nuclear power after the explosion on April 26 1986 in Chernobyl Credit: Getty During a late-night safety test, a sudden power surge led to a reactor explosion and fire, releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. The explosion killed two workers immediately, and acute radiation sickness claimed 28 more lives within weeks. However, around 600,000 'liquidators,' involved in cleaning up the accident, were exposed to high doses of radiation, with various studies reporting that those affected by the blast could be in their thousands. The Chernobyl disaster was a devastating tragedy, meaning it's not a word associated with a person's name. But, there are other meanings to the word Chernobyl. One defended the possible new baby's name, writing: 'I mean, the word Chernobyl was originally the name of a common mugwort plant, a medicinal herb.' They followed up their sentiment with the phrase: 'But there's a reason we don't name children Adol[f] any longer, even if that name was relatively innocuous before 1939.' 'This is so, so bad. They have to be told. Give them a book about Chernobyl as a gift for the baby shower. Because no,' replied someone else.

Outlander star looks unrecognisable as she stuns at glitzy event

Outlander fans couldn't believe their eyes as the actress attended the Tony Awards ceremony last week Outlander actress Laura Donnelly looked sensational as she graced the red carpet alongside some star-studded showbiz faces. Hollywood legends such as George Clooney and Sadie Sink were also nominated at the Tony awards. Laura, famed for her role as Jenny Fraser in the early seasons of the hit Starz show, was nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in The Hills of California. ‌ And the Irish-born actress looked stunning, with many fans complimenting her on the night earlier this week on Monday, June 9, saying she looked almost "unrecognisable". ‌ "Did anyone notice Laura Donnelly as one of the presenters on the TONY awards. She looked so different," quipped one Outlander fan. "If they hadn't posted her name, I would not have known that she was 'our Jenny'," said another. Laura's performance, in which she plays two roles, was described by the New York Times as a 'blur of skittery emotion'. Although she didn't walk away with top gongs, she certainly got everyone talking at the event hosted in New York on June 9. The 78th Tony Awards, which were hosted by Cynthia Erivo, recognises excellence in live Broadway theatre. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in Manhattan. Jamie Fraser's (played by Sam Heughan) older sister Jenny Murray was a key character of the Starz drama for the first three seasons of Outlander. ‌ In the show, Jenny decided to leave with Jamie for America after her husband Ian Murray (Steven Cree) died, believing there to be no reason to stay in Lallybroch. However, fans were unaware at the time that this would be the final time they would see Laura in the role. ‌ She left the historical drama due to having various other commitments. She was performing The Ferryman on Broadway at the time and was pregnant with her second child. Not bringing Donnelly back as Jenny wasn't for a lack of trying though, as executive producer Maril Davis told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. ‌ She explained: "We had every intention of having a Brianna and Jenny [moment] but we waited and we kept dragging our feet, quite honestly, because we thought we could convince her and the schedules would change. "We could move our schedule and accommodate her but at the end of the day, it just didn't work out so we scrambled to come up with another story.' Donnelly herself also said following her departure that a comeback was unlikely as she thought Jenny would be old and so 'I think that's probably me out'.
