Capital aims for EV transition: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
NEW DELHI: At the 'Aironomics 2025' summit held in the capital on Saturday, CM Rekha Gupta said her government was committed to tackling the city's air crisis through strong and clear measures — from scrapping old vehicles to shifting entirely to electric public transport by 2028.
'We have lost clean air, and we are all responsible for it,' Gupta said while addressing the summit on the theme 'A New Air Agenda: Pathways for Scale and Systematic Impact'. She noted that the Delhi government had drawn up a detailed action plan within its first 100 days, including a scrapping policy for end-of-life vehicles.
'Old cars will not be allowed to run. Petrol and diesel vehicles whose life has ended will be removed. We have made a scheme for this,' Gupta said.
Gupta added that Delhi's public transport would transition completely to electric vehicles (EVs). 'In the first phase, we have brought in 400 electric buses, which we call DEVI. Another 200 will be added. By 2028, all buses will be EVs,' she said, highlighting that over 4,000 EV charging stations are being installed across the city.
She also announced the introduction of strict rules for construction activities. 'SOPs will be issued. High-rise buildings must install water sprinklers. Smog guns, water pumps, and other machines will be deployed to keep the air clean,' she said.

Bank Official Stole Crores From FDs, Invested In Stocks. They Tanked
Kota: One would think their money is safest in a bank. But, in a shocking case, this bond of trust was leveraged by a woman officer of a bank in Rajasthan's Kota to dupe customers of more than Rs 4 crore. Reason: The lure of generating high returns in a short period by investing in stocks. And, she used the money in the accounts of more than 41 customers to achieve that. The fraud continued for two years, but no one in the bank had any idea about it. Sakshi Gupta, who was the relationship manager of the ICICI bank, misused the 'User FD (Fixed Deposit)' link and illegally withdrew Rs 4.58 crores from 110 accounts of 41 customers between the years 2020 and 2023. Ms Gupta, as per the probe, invested the money in the stock market. She, however, failed to deposit the money back in the accounts after she incurred heavy losses in the market. She has now been arrested and sent to judicial custody. The police arrested her at her sister's wedding late last night. The scam came to light when a customer came to the bank to inquire about his FD. The bank then filed a case with the police on February 18. The woman even changed the mobile numbers of the customers linked with the accounts so that they would not know about the transaction messages. "She linked the phone numbers of her family members to these accounts and withdrew more than Rs 4 crore. She even devised a system that she used to get the OTPs on her system so that the account holders don't get a whiff of the fraud," said investigating officer Ibrahim Khan. The ICICI Bank has yet to issue a statement. However, sources in the bank said it will compensate the loss suffered by impacted customers. A customer arrived at the bank to check if his money was safe after he learned about Ms Gupta's arrest. "I heard that Sakshi Gupta duped people of Rs 4 crore. I came here to check if my money was safe or not," said Mahavir Prasad. "Where should we keep our money? We can't keep it at home, now we can't keep it with the bank. What should we do?" he asked.

Delhi Assembly to introduce gender-neutral language in rule book: Speaker
Speaker Vijender Gupta said a 100-day report card on Delhi Assembly work will be out June 6, highlighting 12 sittings and 46+ hours of debate - the longest session stretch in 25 years Nandini Singh New Delhi Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has announced plans to amend the Assembly's Rules of Procedure to reflect values of 'inclusivity, clarity, and equality', reported The Hindu. Speaking at a recent press conference, Gupta cited the consistent use of male pronouns in the existing rule book as an outdated practice. 'The process has already started. On June 5, the Rules Committee of the Assembly will meet to discuss and review the changes,' he said. He confirmed that gender-neutral terms like 'them' will replace gender-specific pronouns — a change inspired by best practices already adopted in both Houses of Parliament. These amendments are expected to be implemented in time for the upcoming Monsoon Session, scheduled for July. In addition to procedural changes, Speaker Gupta also shared that a comprehensive '100-day report card' on Assembly proceedings will be released on June 6. He revealed that over this period, the House convened for 12 sittings and held discussions for a total of 46 hours and 16 minutes — the longest single-session activity in the last 25 years. 'This reflects the seriousness and productivity with which legislative business is now being conducted,' Gupta stated. In another major announcement, the Speaker introduced the formation of two new standing committees: the Committee on Welfare of Senior Citizens and the Committee on Welfare of Transgender People. These bodies will focus on policy oversight and advocacy for often overlooked communities in the national capital.

Speaking to ANI, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government plans to add 280 electric buses by 2027. 'We have decided to give 280 electric buses to Delhi. This is a highly comfortable bus. Cameras and a panic button have been installed inside the bus. The buses have a low floor and are air-conditioned.' Delhi was deprived of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign under the last government. Our target is to plant 70 lakh trees this year.' Meanwhile, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav praised the central government's efforts to curb vehicular pollution through smart EV and hydrogen buses. He said, 'The Central government is regularly working on the problem of vehicular pollution... This new campaign for smart EV and hydrogen buses is a huge step in this direction.' Yadav also highlighted PM Modi's symbolic tree plantings in recent years and called the gift of electric buses a step toward purifying Delhi's air. Regarding the tree-planting campaign, Yadav noted, 'Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, around 109 crore people planted nearly 140 crore trees yesterday. This year, PM Modi planted a Banyan sapling. Last year he planted a Peepal sapling. His gift of electric buses to Delhi will surely work to purify the air in Delhi.'
