Nga lauds nation's top spot in open data
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia scored two major achievements on the global stage in the areas of open data and press freedom, says Nga Kor Ming.
The Housing and Local Government Minister lauded the achievements, particularly in the Open Data Inventory (ODIN) 2024/25 ranking where the nation came up tops.
'Malaysia created history by securing the top position in the ODIN with an impressive overall score of 90.
'We outperformed 198 others, including developed nations such as Singapore, Finland, Denmark and Poland,' he told a press conference in conjunction with the Sentuhan Kasih KPKT 3.0 programme in Kuantan yesterday.
Nga said the milestone reflects the commitment of the Madani government with regard to data transparency and public accessibility, particularly through the launch of the OpenDOSM portal in 2023.
The platform modernised and centralised access to Malaysia's official data while reinforcing the country's digital governance framework.
'Open data is crucial because it supports evidence-based policy planning.
'When data is openly accessible, it enables more accurate, informed decision-making by policymakers.
'This also helps build public trust and strengthens governance,' he said.
The achievement, Nga added, also highlights Malaysia's capability to compete globally with regard to its openness and coverage of official data.
He said this further cemented Malaysia's status as a global leader on open government data.
The minister also highlighted a significant improvement in Malaysia's ranking on the World Press Freedom Index 2025, published by Reporters Without Borders.
'Based on the latest evaluation, our ranking rose 19 spots from 107th in 2024 to 88th this year,' he said.
This marked improvement is seen as a positive sign due to ongoing reforms and improvements of the media landscape, he added.
Among Asean nations, Malaysia now holds the second-highest position on the index, behind Thailand, which is ranked 85th globally.

Govt to carry out surprise checks on 13MP projects
PUTRAJAYA: The government will conduct regular and surprise checks on the implementation of all projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the Policy Implementation Monitoring System (PPD), mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 13MP tabling on Aug 1, will be jointly managed by the Finance and Economy Ministries. "We have scheduled reporting, twice a year if I'm not mistaken. "This time, we will ensure everything proceeds as planned since it spans until 2030. "I will personally carry out regular monitoring, surprise checks and project site visits," he told reporters after flagging off the 20th Premier Public Service Assembly (MAPPA XX) Run at Dataran Putrajaya this morning. Also present was Public Service Department director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz. During the 13MP tabling in the Dewan Rakyat, the prime minister said monitoring mechanisms would be strengthened through the PPD system, while the 13MP governance structure would be implemented in stages up to Cabinet reporting. Shamsul Azri also urged civil servants to ensure approved projects are promptly executed. He acknowledged that every project has its own timeline, but warned delays would frustrate the public who are meant to benefit. "Our purpose is to serve the people. We are supposed to make them happy. "So we must carry out development swiftly, without delay and free of bureaucracy," he said. Major 13MP projects include the construction and upgrading of 2,800km of rural roads in Sarawak, Perak and Pahang; a road-to-rail cargo initiative to reduce road accidents; infrastructure projects to strengthen cross-border connectivity and the economy; upgrading of Bukit Kayu Hitam and Rantau Panjang Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complexes and Sabah and Sarawak Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQs); and the construction of one million affordable homes by the federal and state governments and private developers between 2026 and 2035.

Shamsul Azri: Projects under 13MP to be monitored regularly to avoid delays
PUTRAJAYA: Every project under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will be monitored regularly to ensure there are no delays in implementation, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Accordingly, he said the monitoring of projects under the 13MP will be jointly conducted by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy, with reports to be made twice a year. "This time, we will really make sure that the 13MP is implemented as planned, because it spans a long period until 2030. "All approved projects must be implemented promptly, because any delay will cause disappointment among the people," he told reporters after officiating the MAPPA XX 2025 Run in Putrajaya today. Shamsul Azri said he will personally conduct site visits and make surprise inspections at all 13MP project locations. "Our aim is to serve the people and we are supposed to bring them joy. Therefore, we must implement development initiatives without delay and free from bureaucracy," he said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, said the monitoring mechanism will be enhanced through the Policy Implementation Plan Monitoring System (PPD). "The 13MP governance structure will also be mobilised in stages, culminating in reports to the Cabinet," he said. Under the 13MP, Anwar said infrastructure and public facility projects involving flood mitigation and improved road accessibility are among the people-centric initiatives that will be prioritised from 2026 to 2030. He said a total of RM20 billion has been allocated to implement 103 Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) projects to reduce the risks and impact of such disasters. In addition, one million units of affordable housing will be built by the Federal and State Governments, as well as private developers, from 2026 to 2035 to enable as many people as possible to live in safe and comfortable homes. Meanwhile, Shamsul Azri expressed appreciation to the approximately 12,000 participants who took part in the MAPPA XX 2025 Run in Putrajaya today. "Healthy citizens, prosperous nation. Let's be active and engage in sports," he said.
