Ashwin has lauded Anshul Kamboj's bowling skills, comparing him to Zaheer Khan.
Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that while most pacers would always just look to express themselves, Anshul Kamboj is the one who understands the plan and bowls accordingly, much like former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan. Reports suggest Kamboj might be handed a Test debut in Manchester.
Kamboj was drafted into the Indian team for the fourth Test against England in Manchester after injuries to Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh last week.
Kamboj had earlier impressed during India A's twin games against the England Lions ahead of the five-Test series and has now been called back into the senior team.
'The appreciable thing about Anshul is that he understands the plan. I have seen so many pacers. If you ask them about the plan, they just say they want to express themselves and enjoy the game," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
'But Anshul understands plans and also knows how to execute in the middle. It's not a trait many pacers possess. Zaheer Khan was one of them. He was amazing," Ashwin said.
'In recent times, Jassi (Bumrah) is one player who understands the plans and executes them to perfection. Anshul belongs to that variety. I'm not comparing skills because skills are a very different thing," Ashwin added.
Kamboj impressed in the lead-up to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, performing well for India A against the England Lions.
Across four innings at Northampton and Canterbury, Kamboj picked up five wickets, showing late movement and bounce.
'He has a very good tappa (right length). I have seen that in the IPL. His wrist position is very good and he delivers a very upright seam. He never leaves his tappa," Ashwin said.
'With Bumrah and Siraj there, if you are bringing in Anshul Kamboj into the playing XI, I'm telling you, it's serious bowling," Ashwin added.
Kamboj has picked 79 wickets in 24 first-class matches for Haryana, at an impressive economy of 3.1.

India vs England LIVE Cricket Score, 4th Test Day 3: Ollie Pope and Joe Root to resume for ENG 225/2 against IND in Manchester

India vs England Live Cricket Score, IND vs ENG 4th Test Day 3 Match Updates: Ollie Pope and Joe Root were unbeaten at the end of Day 2 for England, taking them to 225/2 in the fourth of the five-match Test series at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday. The hosts still trail by 133 runs. However, the comfortable position of England in the game can be attributed to the sublime 166-run opening partnership between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. While the wicket did have minimal movement, the Indian bowlers sprayed the ball all around, drifting into the pads of the batters consistently and letting the batters get away with easy boundaries. Earlier, India were bundled out for 358 runs in the first innings after England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan chipped in with half-centuries, and England skipper Stokes shone with a 5-wicket haul after eight years in Test match cricket. (AP Photo) India's bowlers struggled on a changing pitch during a cricket match against England. While they faced unfavorable conditions in the afternoon (bright sun, less swing) compared to England's morning spell (cloud cover, rain), India's poor bowling performance allowed England's openers to build a dominant 166-run partnership. This put England in a strong position, making India's first-innings total of 358 look inadequate. (Read more from Sandeep Dwivedi)

‘I sit in my spot until the umpires go out': Zak Crawley responds to Shubman Gill, says he ‘loved eight-minute passage' at Lord's

England opener Zak Crawley has shrugged off India captain Shubman Gill's 'Spirit of Cricket' remarks after accusing him and Ben Duckett of taking an extra 90 seconds to walk out to bat with six minutes of play left on Day 3 of the Lord's Test. 'The English batsmen on that day had seven minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease. Not 10, not 20 – 90 seconds late. Yes, most teams [do] this, in that position we would have also liked to play less overs, but there is a manner to do it,' Gill referred to the incident in which he had animatedly asked Crawley to 'grow some f***ing balls'. 'Yes, if you get hit on your body the physios are allowed to come on and that is something that is fair, but to be able to come 90 seconds late to the crease is not something that I would think comes in the spirit of the game, and just leading up to that event a lot of things that we thought should not have happened, they happened,' Gill had told reporters ahead of the Manchester Test on Tuesday. Defending his stance after thwarting the Indian bowlers with his rapid 84 off 113 deliveries on Thursday, Crawley said: 'No, no. Not at all. I sit in my spot [in the dressing room] until the umpires go out. I saw the umpires go, and I walked out. I wasn't aware that we were 90 seconds late, but fair enough.' Crawley said such high-intensity banter and sledging generally excited him while he's out at the crease. 'I've always enjoyed that part of cricket, to be honest, especially when you're batting,' he said. 'There's two of you against eleven and they're desperate to get you out, and they're chirping you. 'Most of the time, I'd probably let it slide, and then other times, I feel like it's a good chance to put it back on them. I loved that little eight-minute passage. No-one stepped over the line. I thought everyone was in good spirits. It was just competitive cricket, and I really enjoyed it.' Crawley's 31.40 Test average doesn't vouch for great reading after 105 innings. However, the 27-year-old has insisted that he puts in the hard yards on firming up his game. 'I have high standards for myself, and I work very hard in my game,' he said. 'I always want more for myself, and I've certainly wanted more for myself than I've got in the last year or so. That's just an internal thing. I don't feel that pressure from anyone else. 'I just feel like I owe it to myself to have a few more good performances. Days like today make the practice and the tougher times worth it a bit more. Obviously, I wanted more runs today, but I feel like I've worked hard and earned those runs.'
