Didn't bag Oasis tickets? Definitely maybe check out this independent Dublin festival instead

Irish Independent20 hours ago
The Works Festival, in the CIÉ Hall at Inchicore's Sports and Social Club, is offering up everything from live music acts and cheap pints to a céilí and an art market over two days this weekend.
Promoter Adam Kelly told the Irish Independent that all acts set to perform are unsigned and have come through the weekly open mic he runs in the Board venue on Clanbrassil Street in Dublin city.
"They are not on the bigger stages yet, but in previous years we have had the likes of the Onion Boys and Shakalak who have gone on to do bigger things,' Mr Kelly said.
Music acts include instrumental funk band Chief Keegan, emerging Irish indie rockers Dominda, pixie-indie singer songwriter RVE and folk artist Kenan Flannery, along with spoken word from The Vagabond Queen.
Guests will also be treated to a live podcast from the Slim & Light podcast duo.
With drinks priced much lower than many pubs in the city centre, you'd soon forget about the Oasis gigs this weekend.
"The social club is a non-profit organisation, and any money that they make goes back into the club. So they're able to keep the price of a pint a lot cheaper than you get in the city centre. The last time I checked, the price of a pint was €5,' he said.
The CIÉ Hall also has a great history, and was the site where locomotives were serviced before being moved to Heuston Station, and is now a social club for retired Iarnród Eireann workers.
'The Works itself is the name of the building, and that's why we used it again in the festival, a nod to the past and all we have going on at the festival at the moment too,' Mr Kelly said.
"Unfortunately, we had our dates booked before Oasis announced their gig.
'But hopefully, people who couldn't manage to get tickets, a bit like myself, will come down to us.'
The festival will run this Friday and Saturday, and to find out more, check out @theworksfestival on Instagram. Tickets are €30 for both days or €20 for one and are available here.
Other gigs being held in Dublin this weekend include Belfast punk Stiff Little Fingers at the Academy on Friday at 7pm.
This follows their previous sold-out headline gig last August.
The Bernard Shaw is also hosting a block party this Saturday and Sunday, the first in a series of day-into-night parties it's hosting.
Each day, the festivities will kick off at 12pm, with an emphasis on electronic music.
Saturday will see performances from DJs including Óptimo Espacio and Phil Hartnoll of Orbital.
Declan McKenna will perform on Sunday, as well as DJ Clint Boon and more.

She looked in good spirits as she enjoyed some quality time with her daughter and partner. Lorraine has been visiting Sitges, a vibrant coastal town in Catalonia, Spain. Just last week Lorraine stunned in a white minidress during her hen do - as she gears up to marry Mark. The couple are tying the knot in a much-anticipated ceremony surrounded by close friends and family. She got engaged to Mark, a property developer, after she popped the question to him on his birthday in 2023. Lorraine and Mark first met through mutual friends and said their connection was instant. WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY In a desperate bid to change her appearance and feel healthier, the star embarked on an epic weight loss journey courtesy of fat jabs and surgery. Lorraine has admitted that using weight-loss injections wasn't for her after becoming "immune" to them. In a new interview, she confessed to using Wegovy, a weight-loss jab similar to Ozempic and Mounjaro, but she failed to find her desired figure on the medication. EastEnders' Lorraine Stanley looks slimmer than ever after dramatic five stone weight loss Lorraine told the Mirror: "I'd tried Wegovy. I have friends on different weight-loss jabs and they work for them. "I'm not against them, but for whatever reason I feel like I got immune to them. "It got to the point where I was injecting myself and eating at the same time. "I was thinking, 'What the hell are you doing?' So I decided that was it, time to get this surgery booked." Lorraine revealed that she opted to shell out "thousands" to undergo weight-loss surgery at a top Harley Street clinic in London. The actress confessed: "I'm not going to lie, nor am I promoting it, but I had weight-loss surgery two years ago. "I had a gastric sleeve. I went to Harley Street. I didn't go to a clinic in Turkey or anything. "In saying that, I've had friends who've gone to Turkey and had great experiences, but I didn't trust that process. "So, yeah, I went to a London clinic, paid an awful lot of money and had it done. It's hands-down the best thing I've ever done – both for me and for my family." She continued to the publication: "I was at home watching an episode of EastEnders I was in and I could barely look at myself. "The person on screen was unrecognisable to me. "I know TV puts a stone on you, but… so yes, there was an element of vanity, but it was also me wanting to change things for my daughter and our future." Lorraine has now been shy of showing off her svelte figure following her six and a half stone weight loss. She said: "I weigh 8st now. If you look at my little wrists and ankles, this is the weight I should have been. "I should be a thin person. And I always was, until I hit my late twenties." 6 The soap star is set to marry her long-term partner later this year Credit: Instagram 6 Lorraine admitted that using weight-loss injections wasn't for her Credit: Splash

Irish TikTok creator to 'rebrand' after toy giants u-turn on law suit

The Irish creator behind Sylvaniandrama has confirmed that the channel will be rebranded after a lawsuit against her was dropped. Thea Von Engelbrechten is the mastermind behind one of TikTok's most popular parody channels Sylvaniandrama. Her videos were widely beloved on social media for their unhinged skits involving the little animal families: parodying everything from kidnapping, drug abuse, to divorce. However, fans were confused when the channel suddenly went quiet several months ago. It then came to light that Thea was being sued been sued in the US by Epoch, the Japanese toy and computer games company behind Sylvanian Families over her videos. The company claimed that Von Engelbrechten's videos had caused 'irreparable injury' to their reputation. Thea, from Kildare, was just 19 when she started the channel back in 2021 – and the videos quickly skyrocketed in popularity. She currently has over 2.5 million followers on TikTok and one million on Instagram. However, they also eventually caught the attention of Epoch Company Ltd., the Japanese toy and video game company who own Sylvanian Families. The toy giant wasn't impressed (Image: Sylvaniandrama/TikTok) Epoch filed a lawsuit against the creator, claiming the videos could confuse potential purchasers of Sylvanian Families toys into believing that they have been produced or authorised by Epoch. They were suing her over issues pertaining to copyright – including 'creating, publishing, and disseminating online advertising videos' on the back of brand deals with companies like Marc Jacobs and Burberry. A pre-trial conference was set for August 14, where the legal teams from both sides were to meet to explore settlement options or prepare the case for trial. However, Epoch has since dropped its suit against the skit creator. On August 8, the company voluntarily dismissed all claims "without prejudice," with each side covering its own legal costs. On the same day, Thea posted on Instagram: "Hi guys, on the 19th August I will be changing the name and profile picture of this account. I'm not sure what to change it to yet so please let me know if you have any suggestions". Fans flooded the comments with suggestions of what the channel could be renamed to. Popular suggestions included "notsylvaniandrama", "CancelledCritters" and "Desperate Mousewives". Previously, news of the lawsuit had caused fan uproar on social media, with many believing that the videos actually helped promote Sylvanians online. TikTok account @junk_mom posted: 'Imagine if every little girl that ever posted a video on YouTube making her stuffed animals talk to each other was sued by the corporation that made those stuffed animals.' She continued to say that Sylvaniandrama 'opened up a lot of new people to the Sylvanian toys.' 'Sylvanian drama is literally doing free advertising for them, that's so sad,' one comment added. 'Why sue her she's literally giving them customers,' another wrote. A third pointed out that many other people have also created channels around creating fake scenarios with popular toys. They wrote: "It's like the old videos on YouTube we'd watch as a kid of people doing the same thing with Barbie's... It's always been a thing."
