How will Rangers approach second leg?

BBC News4 days ago
Joe Rothwell insists Rangers will head to Athens with a front-foot approach and "won't be looking to defend" their lead. The former Bournemouth midfielder made his debut in the 2-0 first-leg win in the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday night as the Russell Martin era began with victory.Rangers struggled for long spells before 18-year-old Findlay Curtis and debutant Djeidi Gassama struck fine second-half goals after side of Greek defender Giorgos Vagiannidis' red card. The Ibrox side host Middlesbrough in a friendly on Saturday before the second leg against Panathinaikos in the Greek capital on Wednesday."I think we have to now [feel in command of the tie]" Rothwell, 30, said. "Obviously, 2-0, it's a good scoreline, especially in this format."So we'll go out there and obviously we won't be looking to defend it. We'll try and go out there and win the game and score as many goals as we can."It [2-0 win] can be huge. I think he [Martin] said in his press conference, it was not going to be a season-defining game but we wanted to go out there and put a show on and really show how he wants to do things."I think we managed to do that, controlled the game as we like to do and just a bit disappointed that we didn't go and probably kill the game off a little bit more."Rangers should have been behind before Curtis' 52nd-minute opener, with Martin having to settle his new team down at the interval to spark an improved performance."He said to just stick to what we do," Rothwell added. "We went away from it a little bit, in terms of how we want to play."And then obviously with them going down to 10 men, we've managed to control the game and probably disappointed we didn't probably get a few more in the end."Rothwell "loved" his first experience of a European night at Ibrox."Obviously you hear stories from the outside, but when you actually get out there and experience it, it's fantastic and I'm sure the fans are going to be behind us in every single game and we'll need them."

Ollie Watkins heads Man Utd's two-man striker transfer shortlist as club make decision on transfer for new keeper

The Red Devils are also looking to sell players in order to clear the way for new signings NEXT OF KINS Ollie Watkins heads Man Utd's two-man striker transfer shortlist as club make decision on transfer for new keeper OLLIE WATKINS heads Manchester United's two man striker shortlist. But the Old Trafford side will not get involved in a bidding war for PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, leaving the door open for Chelsea and Manchester City to try to lure the Italian. 6 Ollie Watkins has been in pre-season action for Aston Villa Credit: Getty 6 Gianluigi Donnarumma's PSG future is looking in doubt Credit: Shutterstock Editorial United are weighing up moves for either Aston Villa striker Watkins or Leipzig's Slovenian front man Benjamin Sesko. That rules out any interest in Nicolas Jackson, despite Chelsea being increasingly keen to find a taker for the Senegalese attacker. And any move may only be feasible if United can move on Rasmus Hojlund, preferably on a full-time basis rather than a Marcus Rashford-style loan. With United having spent £130m to give boss Ruben Amorim his two top targets - Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the Old Trafford hierarchy do still want a line-leading upgrade. READ MORE ON MAN UTD devilish Man Utd 'looking to hijack Newcastle's Sesko transfer after holding talks' Contact has been made with the entourages of both potential targets, with Watkins' proven Premier League experience a major plus The England striker, 29, has scored 75 top flight goals since moving to Villa Park. Before that, he was part of a successful attacking unit including Mbeumo at Brentford, a further tick in his box While Villa have dismissed all suggestions of an approach and insisted Watkins is not for sale at any price, they did offer him to Arsenal in the January window, before performing a U-turn after selling Jhon Duran instead. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK 6 6 Watkins is more of a box player than Sesko - who was also on Arsenal's summer wishlist - but has proven mobility and running power. At this stage, United are keeping both options open in case one becomes problematic. Man Utd stars baffled after being ordered to wear new high-tech JACKET in sizzling 42C heat on pre-season tour of US The Old Trafford club, aware of Villa's public stance, recognise that negotiations may not be simple and could take until the latter days of the summer window next month. Selling Hojlund, and also commanding fees for Alejandro Garnacho and Antony would make meeting hefty price-tags more likely. Meanwhile, United have shelved their interest in Villa keeper Emi Martinez. A loan offer was made and rejected last week but the club's current position is that Andre Onana will start the season as first choice. And that means no move for Donnarumma, whose contract stand-off with PSG has opened up the prospect he might be available. The Italian, with one year left on his deal with the Champions League winners, is seeking a significant mark-up in his £210,000 per week salary. But United are not willing to go there, meaning they will not rival City - who may lose Ederson and could be reluctant to make new signing James Trafford first choice, and Chelsea as potential Prem contenders. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

After a slow start to life at the club, he established himself as a key man in the side. But Turkish Super Lig clubs are limited to the number of foreign players they're allowed in their squad and Trabzonspor have been looking to move on some of their current overseas stars this transfer window. Lundstram's name was earmarked at the beginning of the summer as one of those who could be moved on to free up a space, as well as former Rangers teammate Borna Barisic who has endured a horror time of things at the club. Then came the dramatic development over the last couple of days that Lundstram had LEFT Trabzonspor's pre-season training camp. Turkish reports suggested he had done so in order to TERMINATE his contract. Lundstram now looks set for a move to Hull City. A move to the Tiger could only happen if Lundstram was a free agent as the English Championship club are currently under a transfer embargo. While Hull are still allowed to register players, they are NOT allowed to pay a transfer fee for any new recruits. The club also look set to add another Trabzonspor player, Enis Destan, to their squad in the coming days. Local journalist Serhat Kantoglu claims that Lundstram held talks with second tier outfit Esenler Erokspor. The club, who have ambitions to make it to the Super Lig, already have one former Rangers star in their ranks. They snapped-up Ryan Jack last year and he's gone on to become a key man in their midfield. Lundstram had caused a stir earlier this month by following the club on Instagram, leading to plenty of fans speculating that he could be about to join the club. While that new report claims talks were held, Hull certainly still appears to be Lundstram's destination. Rangers, meanwhile, are closing in on the signing of Mikey Moore from Tottenham. Manchester United transfer target breaks silence on summer move: "I'll get there"

Manchester United are keen to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and have been keeping an eye on Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma Manchester United have been sent a come and get me plea by one of their transfer targets. Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens is one of the players being considered to strengthen the position and he is very keen on a move to Old Trafford. ‌ Lammens is one of the players United are considering after a difficult campaign for Andre Onana, while Altay Bayindir didn't convince when he got a chance either. Onana was dropped by Ruben Amorim during the 2024/25 campaign, only for his back-up Bayindir to fail to take his chance in goal. ‌ The situation has led to much speculation over potential targets this summer, with ambitious interest in Aston Villa's Emi Martinez and Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma emerging. United even approached Villa over a loan deal for Martinez, only for their offer to be rejected out of hand, while Donnarumma is unlikely to swap Champions League winners for a side that finished 15th last season. ‌ Lammens, a 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, is clearly a much more attainable target for United at this stage. He is reportedly available for a fee of around £13m-17m after Antwerp sporting director Marc Overmars signed Taishi Brandon Nozawa to replace him. He played the full 90 minutes in his side's 1-1 draw against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the league at the weekend. But speaking afterwards, it is clear that Lammens is courting a move away from Belgium. ' Manchester United are one of the best clubs, yes," he told reporters. "But you never know. It could also be a different club, or who knows, I might stay here, in any case, I try to keep my feet on the ground. When teams like that come along, I think you've earned it.' He added: 'I certainly have enough confidence in myself. I think the most important thing is that my future team, whenever they arrive, has a plan in place. Ideally, that means playing immediately, but it's also possible I'll have to take a step in between. 'As long as there's a plan, it doesn't matter whether I'm ready for the next step or not. Everyone has their own career, their own path. Even if I don't take the right step right away, I'll get there. ‌ 'It could be within a few days, but also a few months or a year. I have people around me who help me with that, and that way I can focus on what I need to do.' Royal Antwerp manager Stef Wils won't stand in his way if United do come calling. 'He's proven why,' he said, referring to the transfer interest. 'He has everything a modern goalkeeper needs, and as a young lad, he still has room to grow in a major league. He exudes calm and inspires confidence in his defenders, a plus on high balls.'
