The Los Angeles Chargers open the 2025 season with three straight divisional opponents. At least one analyst feels that the team will get off to a bumpy start.
The Chargers open the season in Brazil against the Chiefs before playing the Raiders in Las Vegas and then hosting the Broncos in Week 3. John Breech of CBS Sports made his predictions for when each NFL team will lose its first game this coming season, and he has the Chargers stumbling out of the gate.
"The Chiefs have won seven straight games against the Chargers, but they've never beaten them in Brazil. However, there's a first time for everything. The Chargers have had a run of bad injury luck with Rashawn Slater out for the season and the Chiefs are the Chiefs", wrote Breech.
Jim Harbaugh fought Andy Reid hard twice last season, but came up short. He goes to 0-3 against him as the coach of the Chargers with this prediction. But it doesn't stop there. While we don't know how Breech sees the Week 2 game vs. the Raiders (because he has the Raiders losing in Week 1 as well), we can see that he predicts the Broncos to beat them in Week 3 as he doesn't have the Broncos losing their first game until Week 4.
That means that the Chargers, according to Breech, will start the season 1-2, at best.
As far as predictions go, it gets a little worse. Over at NFL.com, Ali Bhanpuri and Adam Rank predicted each game of the upcoming season and locked in their playoff teams as a result.
Bhanpuri has the Chargers finishing the season 10-7 and fitting into the No. 6 slot in the AFC. Rank also has them going 10-7, but they miss the playoffs entirely in his prediction.

It seems that the Chargers have failed to create any new believers this offseason, as many analysts see them being about as good as they were last year, if not a little bit worse. Harbaugh could use that as fuel to rally his troops.

Grading the 2019 NFL quarterback draft class

The Indianapolis Colts are going with Daniel Jones as the starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season—at least, in Week 1. The former sixth overall pick by the New York Giants beat out Anthony Richardson, who the Colts drafted with the fourth overall pick in 2023. The selection of the former Florida star has not worked out. He has either been injured or underwhelming, far from a franchise QB that Indy hoped it had chosen. Jones was one of 11 quarterbacks taken in the 2019 draft. How has that class fared in the NFL? Time to grade the former Duke star and the other nine QB picks. (Note: We have omitted a grade for Dwayne Haskins, who died in 2022.) Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals, round 1, pick 1 Murray was wooed from the Oakland Athletics and baseball after winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma. He has shown flashes but nothing to merit the first overall pick in the draft. Murray needs to deliver big time for Arizona in 2025 or it could be time for the Cardinals to consider moving to another signal-caller. Grade: C Daniel Jones, New York Giants, round 1, pick 6 Nothing exceptional from Jones with Big Blue. However, give him credit that he did enough to get a $40 million contract that the Giants walked away from rather quickly. Remember, New York didn't exactly have another elite quarterback to replace Jones. This is a fresh start in a weak division. There are a lot of interesting skill position players around Jones. There is no guarantee he will use them to lead the Colts to great success. Grade: C- Dwayne Haskins, Washington, round 1, pick 1 The former Ohio State quarterback tragically died at the age of 24 in 2022. Drew Lock, Denver Broncos, round 2, pick 42 Lock was largely ineffective in Denver. He was part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos. Lock did not play in 2022. He went to the New York Giants in 2024. You know, the same team that let Jones go. Grade: D- Will Grier, Carolina Panthers, round 3, pick 100 Give Grier credit. He has made more than $4.5 million while playing all of two games. Those came in losses for the Panthers in 2019. He is currently a Dallas Cowboy, his second stint with America's Team. This six teams overall that Grier has called home. Grade: F Ryan Finley, Cincinnati Bengals, round 4, pick 104 The former North Carolina State QB started all of four games for Cincinnati over 2019 and '20. He did win his last start. Grade: F Jarrett Stidham, New England Patriots, round 4, pick 133 Stidham did enough to become backup to Tom Brady in 2019. When the GOAT left for Tampa Bay the next season, Stidham was believed to be the successor. He didn't live up to that hype. Stidham went on to play for the Raiders, where he lost two starts and is currently a Bronco. Stidham is having a strong preseason and that won't mean much before Bo Nix is the Denver starter. Grade: D- Easton Stick, Los Angeles Chargers, round 5, pick 166 Stick stuck with the Chargers until this year and he now is with the Falcons. He completed one pass in 2020, then didn't play until 2023 when he was 0-4 as a starter. Felt like he was destined to be Justin Herbert's backup forever but the Chargers moved on and Stick is hoping to find a home with Atlanta. Grade: F Clayton Thorson, Philadelphia Eagles, round 4, pick 167 No stats for the Northwestern quarterback. He did play for the USFL Houston Gamblers in 2022. Grade: Incomplete Gardner Minshew II, Jacksonville Jaguars, round 6, pick 178 There is an argument that Minshew has been the best quarterback of this sorry lot. He has stareted for four teams and while his overall mark is 17-29, Minshew has thrown for 11,950 yards with 68 touchdowns against 34 interceptions. He has a big arm and just as big a personality. The Chiefs saw enough in Minshew to bring him in to their fold for this season. Grade: B- Tracey McSorley, Baltimore Ravens, round 6, pick 197 McSorley was 0-1 as a starter. That game came for Arizona in 2022. He currently is the assistant quarterbacks coach at his alma mater, Penn State. Current Nittany Lions QB Drew Allar has to hope he has a better NFL career than McSorley. Grade: F

Arch Manning gives his take on Quinn Ewers play in the NFL so far

Arch Manning on Quinn Ewers playing in the NFL'Yeah he balled didn't he? He's a baller, bro. He's accurate, he makes plays so I'm excited for him.' 😄 After a rough start to his first NFL preseason game, former Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers threw two touchdowns for the Miami Dolphins in his second preseason game, leading Miami to a 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Arch Manning thinks Ewers is doing pretty well. Ewers led an epic late 17-play drive with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter to seal with win. His former backup QB likes what he sees. "Yeah he balled didn't he? He's a baller, bro. He's accurate. He makes plays. So I'm excited for him.' A lot has been made about Manning backing up Ewers for two years. Even Steve Spurrier offered up his opinion on whether playing Ewers cost Texas a national title or Manning more development. "My question is, if he was this good how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year?" Spurrier asked. "He was a 7th round pick?' Through it all, Manning and Ewers stayed good friends and they keep in contact as much as time permits. "I learned so much from Quinn in my two years behind him," Manning said at SEC Media Days. "I think he handled it like a pro. It's definitely not easy having me as the backup with all the media. I'm forever grateful for him.I actually texted him the other week for advice on two-minute, what kind of plays he likes to start with." Miami and Ewers face the Jacksonville Jags on Saturday for Preseason game No. 3. Manning will kick off the season on Aug. 30 in Columbus, Ohio. The Grant Stuard experiment at kick returner will continue for the Lions

Stuard said he borrows from Jahmyr Gibbs in his style Grant Stuard is not your typical NFL kick returner. As a hard-hitting, 225-pound linebacker, Stuard is much bigger and less averse to initiating contact than the standard return specialist, often a speedy or shifty wide receiver like Detroit's Kalif Raymond. Yet Stuard continues to rep with Raymond as the Lions' primary kick returners. That's despite fumbling away the opening kickoff of the Hall of Fame game, when he unintentionally rammed full-speed into the back of a teammate blocking for him. Since then, Stuard has developed into a real threat with his all-gas, no-brakes running style and surprising speed for a linebacker. He did dabble in college, at Houston, as a running back, so it's not completely unfamiliar for Stuard. Since entering the NFL in 2021 as Mr. Irrelevant with the Indianapolis Colts, Stuard has also quickly emerged as one of the league's best kick and punt coverage players. Stuard blends those backgrounds to help mold his kick return style. "I think that, just understanding — I think it's the longer I play football, the more I understand the threat of a dynamic guy with the ball in his hands," a pensive Stuard opined. "And me knowing, as a cover guy and a defensive guy, I'd kind of rather play the guys who want to get sideways." Stuard further explained why, "One, because I'm fast. But two, it's just kind of like if you have a guy that's as fast as Jah (Jahmyr Gibbs) and he's slicing through your defense, now he's at the second level immediately. So I kind of have that same mentality with the ball in my hand, as far as like, if I can slice through, slice through, eventually I'm going to get through. Get one-on-one with the safety with all my momentum, should be something good for the Detroit Lions." As a reserve linebacker, Stuard has proven a natural fit in Detroit with his downhill, always-attacking style. He's a strong open-field tackler who is perfectly willing to blow up a lead blocker, or ruin quick screens and slants--ask Miami from joint practices last week. Stuard's potential as a kick returner got more than lip service from Lions special teams coordinator Dave Fipp. After noting the ill-fated fumble, Fipp was enthusiastic about Stuard's upside returning kicks. "He showed a bunch of great things and then it said to us, 'OK, now we got to invest more time in him, to be fair to him and help him with ball security, and stuff like that, ' Fipp told reporters on Tuesday. "But it's now worth the investment because of what he's shown. So, we're excited about him.' Expect to see more of No. 15 and his thick mop of hair barely contained by a helmet returning kickoffs against the Houston Texans in the preseason finale on Sunday. And don't be surprised if Stuard fields the opening kickoff in Green Bay in Week 1, too.
