Kyrgyzstan's Petrashov hopes landmark medal at worlds brings more support

Reuters3 days ago
July 28 (Reuters) - Denis Petrashov said he hopes his surprise 100 metres breaststroke bronze medal at the world championships in Singapore on Monday will see more resources flow into the sport back home in Kyrgyzstan.
Petrashov is one of just two swimmers from Kyrgyzstan at the meet alongside Aiymkyz Aidaralieva but the 25-year-old made his presence felt by finishing behind Qin Haiyang of China and Italian Nicolo Marinenghi at the Singapore Sports Hub.
His time of 58.88 was a national record and earned Kyrgyzstan their first-ever medal at the world championships.
It was also just 0.65 seconds off Qin's winning mark.
"I'm not an emotional person, but this is very emotional for me. First medal for my country at the worlds, so very proud and happy. I was not expecting this at all," said Petrashov, who was swimming in lane 1.
"I had no idea where I was in the race. I saw the turn, we were close to each other, but I didn't see anything.
"Of course we all want to win something. This was the final, I had nothing to lose. If you have a lane, you have a chance. It means a lot."
Petrashov, who has competed at three Olympic Games and won silver at the Youth Olympics in 2018, hoped his medal would raise the profile of the sport in the Central Asian country.
"Swimming is not very popular in my country. Hopefully, we'll get more resources for swimming. We don't have an Olympic-sized pool in Kyrgyzstan," he added.
"Hopefully this is a big step to more things."

Unseen moment Rangers stars confronted by raging Panathinaikos ace as Djeidi Gassama celebrates crucial strike

But new footage has shown that one Panathinaikos player didn't seem too pleased about it all. Russell Martin's men weathered an almighty storm with Jack Butland called into action just as he was the week before. The Greeks also squandered several great chances. Panathinaikos did, however, open the scoring on 53 minutes when Filip Djuricic's rather scrappy header found the back of the net. But just a minute after coming on, new fans' favourite Gassama clambered off the bench to strike with a superb first time finish. While the host Greek broadcaster showed several replays of Gassama's goal, something appeared to have happened. When the cameras switched back to the live action, Italian referee Simone Sozza was seen dishing out yellow cards. One went to a rather bemused Gassama with the other flashed towards Panathinaikos midfielder Anastasios Bakasetas. However, to those viewing on TV, it wasn't entirely clear why. Gassama appeared to have been cautioned for jumping over the advertising hoardings to celebrate his goal but Bakasetas' booking was a bit of a mystery. Rangers have released an alternative match view with their own footage as part of their 'Away Days' series on YouTube. And the footage shows exactly what went on as Gassama celebrated his goal. The winger can be seen blasting the ball home before wheeling away in delight to celebrate. But as he turns around to take the adulation of his teammates, someone else decides to show up - Bakasetas. The veteran midfielder - who had already clashed with Gers star Joe Rothwell earlier in the game - could be seen confronting the gathered Light Blues players. The Greece international appears in shot and immediately gets into words with Gers skipper James Tavernier. Danilo and Max Aarons then get into it with Bakasetas, who is subsequently joined by teammate Erik Palmer-Brown who also doesn't look too impressed. What isn't clear is exactly what made Bakasetas so unhappy. Gassama wasn't about to hang around to find out. The Gers new boy can be seen turning back towards the fans while his teammates spar with Bakasetas. The 21-year old puts his fingers to his ears as he faces the supporters. Gassama's goal made it 3-1 on aggregate and that saw Rangers through to the third qualifying round. They'll now take on Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen with the first leg taking place at Ibrox this coming Tuesday. 5 Gassama continued his celebrations while it was going on behind him Credit: YOUTUBE/RANGERS FC 5 The Gers ace and Bakasetas were both booked Credit: YOUTUBE/RANGERS FC Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Lewis Hamilton has ‘absolute confidence' in Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur

Vasseur's position has been under scrutiny this season, with Ferrari yet to land a single win outside of Hamilton's sprint victory in China in March. Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has even been linked with the job since he was ousted earlier this month. Since his transfer from Mercedes, Hamilton has not landed a grand prix podium in Ferrari colours – a streak of 13 races – the deepest into the season he has ever gone without a top-three finish. FRED VASSEUR CONTINUES WITH SCUDERIA FERRARI HP — Scuderia Ferrari HP (@ScuderiaFerrari) July 31, 2025 However, speaking ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the 40-year-old said: 'I am always positive about Fred, and I have told everyone that. I told you before it was the right choice. 'Fred signed me here. He is completely different to (Mercedes team principal) Toto (Wolff) but in terms of characters they are both massive racers. 'The real positive when I worked with Toto was how he was able to utilise individuals and figure out how people work best and how to get the most out of someone. 'For me, he created me with freedom to be able to express myself the way I wanted to and that enabled me to be the best version of myself. 'Fred is similar in that respect. I am still trying to learn the way he works. But I have absolute confidence in Fred, as I have always said.' Hamilton is sixth in the standings, 157 points off the championship pace and 30 points behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari are second in the constructors' standings. Hamilton said at last week's round in Belgium that he had staged meetings with all of Ferrari's key figures – including chairman John Elkann, CEO Benedetto Vigna and Vasseur – and submitted two documents outlining his vision as to why the Italian giants are not up to speed. Ferrari's last world drivers' title came in 2007, with their most recent constructors' crown the following year. In a statement released ahead of the concluding round before the summer break, Ferrari said: 'Scuderia Ferrari HP is pleased to announce that it has extended, with a multiple-year contract, its agreement with Fred Vasseur, who will continue as team principal for the coming Formula One seasons. 'Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing. Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula One. 'Renewing Fred's contract reflects Ferrari's determination to build on the foundations laid so far. His ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari's values and long-term ambitions. 'Under Fred's leadership, Scuderia Ferrari HP is united, focused, and committed to continuous improvement. The trust placed in him reflects the team's confidence in its strategic direction and reinforces a shared determination to deliver the results that Ferrari's fans, drivers, and team members expect and deserve.' Frenchman Vassuer, 57, continued: 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation — it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver. 'Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.'
