Cowboys Headlines: Injuries hit OL, TE rooms; Stephen Jones dismisses 'Pay Micah' chants

USA Today6 days ago
Monday evening saw Cowboys fans go on a bit of a rollercoaster regarding a key piece of the 2025 offensive plan. The news on Tyler Guyton's injury, however, turned out not to be as bad as originally thought. We'll give you the latest on his expected recovery timetable as well as what the Cowboys may do in the interim at left tackle. We'll also update you on the other offensive lineman to go down over the weekend as well as the rising tight end fighting for a backup spot. And what's the common denominator among three of four defensive backs brought in for Monday workouts? We'll explain.
Elsewhere, we're looking at DaRon Bland's return to the field- and with extra motivation, the tone-deaf way Stephen Jones reacted to fans' "Pay Micah" chants, why the Jake Ferguson deal continues a troubling trend in Dallas, and how rookie Jaydon Blue is stacking up against some big expectations. All that, plus Brian Schottenheimer is mic'd up and fired up, and Deion Sanders makes a stunning revelation about his health: what it means for the 2025 college football season.

First reports out of Oxnard were that last year's first-round draft pick had torn an ACL during the team's second padded practice, all but guaranteeing a lost season. Later, though, it was learned that the left tackle had suffered a less-severe injury; the ACL was still intact. With no surgery required, Guyton should be out just four to six weeks. If all goes well, he could still be available Week 1.

The 40 minutes or so when Cowboys Nation thought Guyton was gone for the year made for some sky-is-falling social media. Then news that his injury wasn't as bad as feared had everyone doing a quick reversal.

While not as bad as it first seemed, the loss of Guyton will require the team to go to Plan B at left tackle. Asim Richards has experience at the position, and the third-year man seems ready to take a leap forward. Nate Thomas has been turning head in his second camp, too. And remember that Tyler Smith was originally drafted to be the LT of the post-Tyron Smith future.

The team may still want to consider bringing in outside help in case Guyton's absence extends beyond its expected window. Tyron Smith's name got kicked around on social media almost immediately upon news of the injury; maybe he could come out of retirement and join the team after camp if needed. Ex-Browns first-rounder Jedrick Wills is available, as is former Cleveland lineman Germain Ifedi and onetime Seahawk/Jet/Texan George Fant.

The tight end went down with an ankle injury during Sunday's practice and will miss "a couple weeks," per Schottenheimer. The 2024 undrafted free agent out of Minnesota had turned in a good camp thus far and looked to be pushing Luke Schoonmaker for primary backup duties.

Robert Jones was thought to be a key depth piece in his first year with the Cowboys and had been taking reps with the first-team offense last week. During Sunday's practice, the 32-game starter broke a bone in his neck and is now expected to miss two to three months.

Fans attending practice over the weekend were quite vocal, with their "Pay Micah" chants being heard loud and clear. Jones dismissed the cries, though, saying last year's fans were louder in calling for a CeeDee Lamb extension. "It doesn't change anything," he said of the status of talks with Parsons. "We want to pay Micah, too. He's got to want to be paid, too."

Instead of a prove-it year, 2025 will see the tight end playing on a new $52 million extension. The team has bigger fish to fry, though: most notably, Micah Parsons, DaRon Bland, or even Tyler Smith. It's far from the first time the team has rewarded someone further down the pecking order and made the superstar wait. Ferguson's deal may be in line with his position's going rate, but the price tag for the others goes up with every day the club delays.

Bland was back at work Monday following the birth of his son, something the All-Pro says will provide a little extra encouragement to him on the field. "It's more motivation after bringing a new life here," he said. "It's a boost to show him what I'm about, and to be a good role model."

Jaydon Blue is carrying expectations higher than normal for a fifth-round draft choice. So far, his carries at training camp have shown he's ready for the burden. He's displayed impressive acceleration on backfield runs and dynamic ability as a receiver.

With Cowboys players contributing songs to the team's practice playlist, the owner had to also get in on the act. But his choice of the Pointer Sisters' 1981 "Slow Hand" was an obnoxiously bizarre choice that, for most, merely pointed to the tone-deaf "look at me" mentality that seeps into everything Jones does these days.

Sanders will be back on the Colorado sidelines despite undergoing the removal of his bladder earlier this spring. Doctors found a malignant tumor during routine tests, and the "high recurrence rate" discovered helped inform the Hall of Famer's decision. Sanders's medical team used pieces of his own intestines to construct a new bladder, and he'll continue to be monitored moving forward.

Tennessee Titans training camp: 5 takeaways from Day 9

The Tennessee Titans were back on the practice field Sunday and went through an emotional and intense practice. Like every practice in training camp, there were highs and lows, and the physicality got tempers flaring, setting off the first altercations of training camp. The defense bounced back and won the day, while the offense struggled after back-to-back solid outings. Here are five takeaways from the Titans' ninth practice of training camp. Tempers flare With the intensity of practice ramping up over the past few days, it was only a matter of time before players started to lose their cool, and it happened twice on Sunday. First, Mason Kinsey and Jarvis Brownlee got into a shoving match that teammates quickly broke up. This comes as no surprise, as Brownlee has been feisty and physical during camp, and caught the ire of Calvin Ridley on Saturday. The festivities didn't stop with Kinsey and Brownlee, as veterans Jeffery Simmons and JC Latham decided to take their physical battle up a notch before being separated by their teammates. Offensive struggles The offense started with a solid 7-on-7 period and went downhill from there. They weren't crisp; balls hit the ground, and the unit took a step in the wrong direction. Not only did the defense set the tone, but it also let the offense know about it, and eventually, head coach Brian Callahan joined in and made it clear that their performance on the field was lacking on Sunday. Tight ends are making plays The early 7-on-7 work in the red zone might have been the only real positive for the offense, and the tight end unit was the catalyst. Gunnar Helm, David Martin-Robinson, and Drake Dabney all pulled in touchdowns. There is a good battle taking place within that unit, and it appears to be one of the deepest positions on the roster. Starter Chig Okonkwo has been solid and flashing even more big-play potential, and Helm, Martin-Robinson, and Josh Whyle have flashed in recent days. Slye bounces back Kicker Joey Slye bounced back after a rough day and showed the accuracy that the Titans are counting on in 2025. He was a perfect 6-of-6 on Sunday with a long of 54 yards. Sley is now 31-of-36 in camp. Of course, these kicks lack game pressure, so monitoring how he does against the air will be important as the Titans progress through training camp. Injury front The Titans saw a couple of players leave the field on Sunday, including rookie safety Kevin Byard and defensive tackle Carlos Watkins. While Winston was planned, as the team is monitoring his knee after missing the offseason recovering from ACL surgery, Winston was not. The team once again held out T'Vondre Sweat, Blake Hance, and Chandler Brewer due to injury, but all three are considered day-to-day. After practice, offensive line coach Bill Callahan spoke about center Lloyd Cushenberry and was excited about his potential return, stating he is optimistic he will be returning sooner rather than later. Kevin Zeitler was given the day off.

Dez Bryant Issues Threat To Jerry Jones After Micah Parsons Trade Request

Dez Bryant Issues Threat To Jerry Jones After Micah Parsons Trade Request originally appeared on The Spun. Dez Bryant didn't take too kindly to Jerry Jones mentioning him by name in the midst of the team's ongoing contract standoff with Micah Parsons. Apparently the reason the 82-year-old oil maverick doesn't want to deal with Parsons' agent is because of his experience with the former Cowboys receiver, and when word got back to the three-time Pro Bowler it wasn't pretty. Speaking to the media at Dallas' training camp over the weekend, Jones recalled trying to get a deal done with Dez back in 2015 when he was being represented by JAY-Z's Roc Nation — and dealing with the hip-hop mogul seemed to turn him sour on having agents involved in the negotiation process at all. "Because when we have a problem with the player, the agent is nowhere to be found," Jones told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Saturday. "JAY-Z said that Dez would make all meetings. JAY-Z and I negotiated the contract, spent hours." "He said, 'Anybody in my organization is on time.' He said, 'My office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So, they will be on time,'" Jerry added. "And what did I say? I said, 'I'm going to call you [when I have a problem].' He quit taking my call." That's when Dez got involved on social media with a message for his former boss. "JERRY JONES I DONT THINK ITS SMART TO MENTION MY NAME I KEPT QUIET ABOUT A LOT OF UNFAIR S—T.. ON SOME G S—T…" Bryant warned. "WE CAN HAVE STORY TIME IF THATS WHAT WE ARE DOING." "Yall don't understand the amount of s—t I let slide.." he added. "do not mention my name about s—t. The love hate relationship is real!" Bryant inked a five-year, $70 million deal with the Cowboys at the time. After which he never recorded another 1,000-yard season again — with 2014's 1,320-yard, 16-touchdown campaign remaining the most productive of his career. Dez injured his Achilles in 2018 causing him to miss the entirety of the next two seasons before a brief six-game stint with the Baltimore Ravens. Although he has still yet to officially retire, Bryant hasn't played a game of football in more than five years and is eligible to be a part of next summer's 2026 Hall of Fame Bryant Issues Threat To Jerry Jones After Micah Parsons Trade Request first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

Cowboys Make Decision On Trading Micah Parsons

Cowboys Make Decision On Trading Micah Parsons originally appeared on The Spun. For all the noise coming out of Dallas following Micah Parsons' social media trade request, it doesn't seem to be being taken all that seriously by Cowboys ownership. In a lengthy post to X over the weekend, Parsons talked about the ups and downs of negotiations to this point and that he ultimately landed on not wanting to be a Dallas Cowboy anymore. "Unfortunately I no longer want to be here," Parsons wrote. "I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me. I had purposely stayed quiet in hopes of getting something done." Those words didn't appear to sway Jerry Jones who pretty much attempted to call the All-Pro's bluff with this weekend's comments to the media. "I think the world of Micah. That's just the part of negotiation. I don't really place that with any seriousness," Jones said of the linebacker's trade request, via Jon Machota. "I wouldn't be standing here with you if I didn't think we potentially had a great future with Micah [Parsons]," Jones continued. "We're in good shape. This is negotiation. But make no mistake about it, life has to go on if something happens to me or anybody else. Life does go on. ... I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over this." In an interview with the team's website Jerry went on to say that people would be shocked if they saw the actual figure that's been on the table to keep Micah in Frisco. "What y'all don't know is what I offered him, and it's a helluva lot more than you think I did," Jones claimed. "That's what you don't know ... But my point is I reached. Make no mistake about it. I reached." Jones also made a reference to "guaranteeing somebody almost $200 million," which if true, would make Micah far and away the highest-paid pass rusher in the NFL above the likes of T.J. Watt, Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett who all signed big money contract extensions since Micah and Jerry met back in March. However, that very much remains to be Make Decision On Trading Micah Parsons first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.
