Traffic stop leads to arrest over series of cable thefts in Bayan Lepas, three accomplices at large
Southwest district police chief ACP Sazalee Adam said police stopped the 27-year-old man in a Proton Wira as he was behaving suspiciously.
'A search of the car uncovered various tools and items suspected to be linked to cable theft activities, including cable rolls, several cut cable rods, a metal hammer, modified iron tools, a hook and chain lifting set, as well as several mobile phones and identity cards belonging to other individuals,' he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He said the man had admitted to being involved in cable theft along with three others who are still at large.
Checks also found that the suspect had criminal records involving five drug-related offences and seven other criminal cases.
He is now in remand to assist investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 20 — Police confirmed they received a report about an incident involving a car being struck by an arrow on Jalan Macalister here, which has since gone viral on social media. Northeast police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 57-year-old male driver lodged the report, and investigations confirmed that the incident occurred at 3.30pm on August 13. 'While the complainant was driving from Air Itam towards Jalan Pangkor and passing through Jalan Macalister, an arrow, believed to have come from an archery activity, suddenly lodged itself onto the right rear door of his car. 'The man was unharmed in the incident, and the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief,' he said in a statement today. Abdul Rozak said checks revealed that an archery training activity organised by the Penang State Sports Council (MSN) was being held at the school field adjacent to Jalan Macalister, and it was halted on Aug 14 after the incident was reported. He added that the matter was also reported to the Penang MSN and the State Education Department by the school. A viral 51-second video showed a car driver shocked after discovering an arrow lodged in his car as he drove along the road. — Bernama

Anwar defends Bukit Aman CID chief Kumar's appointment after Opposition's mockery, says ethnicity not obstacle
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reportedly defended the appointment of Datuk Seri M Kumar as Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, amid criticism from Opposition over the latter's ethnicity. Free Malaysia Today reported Anwar stressing that ethnicity should not be an obstacle for qualified candidates to hold senior government positions. 'It is not an issue for me. Anyone who can do the job is eligible for it,' he said during the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly. Anwar also pointed out that the country's police leadership remained predominantly Malay, including the inspector-general of police (IGP), his deputy, and several other departmental directors. Earlier this month, Badrul Hisham Shaharin from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia had posted a backhand compliment over Kumar's appointment — citing the 'Malaysian Malaysia' concept that is used to demonise DAP. Port Dickson Bersatu division chief known as Che'gubard said that Malaysia may see a non-Bumiputera IGP, chief justice, and chief of the Defence Forces, after the appointments of Kumar and the Armed Forces' Lieutenant-General Datuk Johnny Lim. Kumar was appointed to lead the federal police's CID on August 8, replacing acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus. Kumar, 56, joined the police force in December 1991 as an Inspector. His previous roles include serving as Johor deputy police chief, Johor CID deputy chief, Johor Baru South deputy district police chief, and Mersing district police chief.

Cabinet to discuss tribunal for child bullying cases, PM says amid spotlight over deaths
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said today that the Cabinet will deliberate on the proposal for a tribunal to handle bullying cases involving children 'This proposal will be brought to Cabinet,' New Straits Times quoted him replying briefly after the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly here. Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said suggested that Putrajaya will review the need to enact an Anti-Bullying Act that emphasises the establishment of a tribunal to hear bullying cases involving students and children. At present, she said, there is no specific definition or clear punishment for the offence of bullying under any legal provision. She however lauded the introduction of Sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code that handles similar offences, in addition to the appointment of a Children's Commissioner in Sabah and Sarawak. Fatal bullying of children has come into public spotlight recently following the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin. The family of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman who was found dead in Kok Lanas, Kelantan in 2013 has also called for the case to be reopened. Five teenage girls are scheduled to be charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu this morning in connection with the bullying case of student Zara Qairina.
