Labubu fans dote over ugly-cute doll trending at Comic-Con
The wide-eyed and grinning doll was created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. In 2019, Lung allowed them to be sold by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company that sells collectible figurines, often in 'blind boxes'.
'Blind boxes' are sealed boxes containing a surprise item that is usually part of a themed collection.
Naomi Galban, from San Diego, waited in line on Sunday at the Pop Mart booth in the San Diego Convention Center for a chance to get her first Labubu.
'Every time I go to a Pop Mart store, they're sold out,' the 24-year-old told Reuters. She hoped to buy one for her little sister.
Emily Brough, Pop Mart's Head of IP Licensing, spoke to Reuters on Thursday about Labubu fans at Comic-Con.
'We love to see how fans are personalizing it (Labubu) for themselves,' Brough said next to the Pop Mart booth.
While Brough noted that there were many people with a Labubu strapped to their bags and backpacks at Comic-Con, the doll's popularity did not happen overnight.
Labubus had a huge boost in 2019 after Pop Mart began selling them, and in 2024, when Blackpink's Lisa, who is Thai, created a buying frenzy in Thailand after she promoted Labubu on social media.
Pop Mart saw sales skyrocket in North America that same year, with revenue in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2025 already surpassing the full-year U.S. revenue from 2024, Pop Mart said.
When he created Labubu, Lung gave the character, who is female, a backstory inspired by Nordic mythology.
He called her and his other fictional creatures 'The Monsters.'
Diana Goycortua, 25, first discovered Labubu through social media, and before she knew it, it felt like a 'game' to try and collect the dolls.
'It's a little bit of gambling with what you're getting,' the Labubu fan from San Diego said on Sunday while waiting at the Pop Mart booth, concluding that her love for the character made it worth trying blind boxes.
Goycortua already has three Labubus, and was hoping to score her a fourth one at Comic-Con.

Paris Jackson confirms split from Justin Long after public breakdown
Paris Jackson has officially ended her engagement to actor Justin Long, confirming the breakup just days after she was seen tearfully walking alone. The announcement came in the early hours of August 1 via her social media, following intense speculation after a photo of her crying went viral. The emotional image, captured shortly after Michael Jackson's 16th death anniversary, led fans to assume she was mourning her father. But Paris cleared the air with a blunt response on X (formerly Twitter), 'Those are breakup tears. Y'all are fkn reaching again.' The split comes as a shock, especially considering how recent reports had suggested the couple were deep into wedding planning. Friends of Paris told media as recently as July 29 that she had been busy organising the upcoming ceremony. The engagement, which lasted eight months, began in December 2024, when Paris shared a heartfelt post thanking Justin for being her person. Until earlier this month, the couple seemed inseparable, with Paris sharing affectionate snapshots from her tour with Incubus and Manchester Orchestra. But the public breakdown, followed by her social media confirmation, marks a clear and painful end to the relationship. The 27-year-old singer and model, daughter of the late King of Pop, has spoken candidly about her journey with mental health and sobriety. In January 2025, she celebrated five years clean from alcohol and heroin, crediting her sobriety for giving her the strength to feel deeply, both joy and heartbreak. While Paris hasn't issued any additional statements, her fans have rallied with support online. Many are praising her honesty and resilience, especially in dealing with grief and personal loss in such a public spotlight.

‘Wednesday' Season 2 gets gothic global premiere in London
LONDON: Hit Netflix series 'Wednesday' expands the Addams Family world as it returns to screens nearly three years after the show launched in November 2022. Season Two of the dark fantasy series premiered at London's Westminster on Wednesday, with its cast and creators walking a purple carpet outside Central Hall and Queen Elizabeth II Centre. The new season sees Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, returning to Nevermore Academy as a celebrated hero, much to her dismay. The tetchy teen puts her detective hat back on to solve new supernatural mysteries, while dealing with glitches in her psychic powers. Wednesday also faces another nuisance - family. Her little brother Pugsley, played by Isaac Ordonez, starts his studies at Nevermore and their parents are a frequent presence on campus. 'She's kind of knocked off her feet this season. So it's a lot of pressure,' said Ortega. The series' creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said 'Wednesday' returns 'bigger and better'. 'There's more of the Addams Family this season,' said Gough. 'We learn more about the characters you got to meet in Season One and they have their own storylines.' The sophomore season also introduces new characters, including Steve Buscemi's Nevermore principal Barry Dort and the Addams family matriarch Grandmama Hester Frump, played by Joanna Lumley. George Lucas makes Comic-Con debut for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Pop star Lady Gaga makes a guest star appearance as a teacher in Part 2. Mother-daughter dynamics are at the heart of the new season, said Millar. 'It's about mothers and daughters, it's three generations of Addams women together. It's also about learning to not be in control of everything, for Wednesday. And it's really always about female friendship and female sisterhood,' he said. Ortega, 22, also executive produced the new season. Rather than control, it gave her 'freedom' she said. 'She's kind of our cast spokesperson. Any time I felt like something needed to be said or if I had any ideas, she was always like, 'come to me and we'll make it work'. She just looks out for us,' Emma Myers, who plays Wednesday's roommate Enid Sinclair, said. Filmmaker Tim Burton also returns as one of the directors and executive producers. 'Wednesday' Season Two will be released in two four-episode installments, with Part One dropping August 6 and Part Two out on September 3.
