NZME Stakes Claim In Explosive Country Music Market With Launch Of iHeartCountry New Zealand
Responding to the massive surge in country music popularity worldwide, New Zealand Media and Entertainment (NZME) has today announced the exciting launch of a dedicated country music station, iHeartCountry New Zealand on Friday 9 May – marking a pivotal expansion of the company's audio portfolio.
Initially ad-free, iHeartCountry New Zealand will be available via NZME's market-leading digital audio app iHeartRadio and broadcast across FM frequencies in Auckland, Northland, Gisborne, Nelson, Christchurch, West Coast and Wānaka.
The new station will feature an extensive playlist of hits from global country music superstars including Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson, Keith Urban, Dasha, Kane Brown, Megan Moroney and Jason Aldean, alongside homegrown New Zealand talent such as Kaylee Bell.
Jason Winstanley, NZME Chief Audio Officer says: 'We're so excited to be launching iHeartCountry New Zealand, filling what we see as a significant gap in our local audio landscape. Country music is experiencing a massive surge in growth globally, with mainstream audiences embracing the genre like never before.
'Recent sold out shows from artists like Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen and Chris Stapleton in New Zealand demonstrates the strong and growing appetite for country music here. NZME is proud to be a trailblazer in introducing a dedicated country music station to the market and I have no doubt it's going to be hugely popular.'
Kim Boshier from Sony Music New Zealand said: 'Country music has always had an audience in Aotearoa, but in recent years it's finally gained mainstream popularity, which is great for all of us. We're seeing local artists like Kaylee Bell achieving remarkable success, while international country stars are drawing bigger audiences than ever before. Having a dedicated platform for country music in New Zealand will further fuel this momentum and provide a home for both established and emerging country artists.'
Legendary NZ concert promoter Brent Eccles from Eccles Entertainment says: 'Yes…! I've been telling anyone who will listen for a couple of years now, that someone should start a country music station in NZ and it makes me feel all warm inside that it's finally being done. Lots of great country artists are coming down to New Zealand and Australia now and this will be compelling reason to have them play here. Add to this our amazing local country talent and it all adds up to a bloody good idea.'
Michael Boggs, CEO of NZME, says the launch of iHeartCountry New Zealand perfectly aligns with NZME's strategic priorities to grow its audiences.
'This addition to our audio portfolio strengthens our position to be the country's leading audio company and allows us to connect with new audiences while offering our advertising partners access to an engaged and passionate listenership. By identifying this gap in the market and responding to changing listener preferences, we're demonstrating our commitment to delivering content that resonates with New Zealanders.'
Listeners can tune in to iHeartCountry New Zealand from Friday 9 May on iHeartRadio or via the following frequencies:
• Auckland – 105.4 FM
• Northland – 95.6 FM
• Nelson – 104.0 FM

• Gisborne – 88.3 FM

The Secret Diary of the .. Coldplay affair scandal
Winston Peters from NZ First I have sent a strongly worded letter joining 25 other world leaders to object to the Coldplay affair scandal. We, the undersigned, have called for an end to: The affair. It must cease immediately. Coldplay. They must lay down their instruments, and disband. Astronomer. It must go into receivership. Jumbotrons. The plug must be pulled. It is a public menace. We are confident of a result. Rawiri Waititi from Te Pāti Māori Astronomer CEO Andy Bryson, white. His co-worker Kristin Cabot, white. Coldplay, producers of the whitest music ever recorded. Read into that what you will but I will only add that Māori did not have affairs before white people came to Aotearoa. It was a society based on fidelity, loyalty, peace, harmony, freedom, liberty, equality, and filing audited financial statements. Scott Robertson from the All Blacks Andy and Kristin were just there to play footy with each other and they were in a good place. You could see they were feeling it. I mean once Chris Martin starts singing 'Yellow' then that's when the heat is on and desire is going to lean into the maul. But the Jumbotron incident was against the run of play. Things took a wicked bounce and that's just one of those unfortunate things with modern stadiums. Everyone is watching everyone else, and one thing we know about footy is that you can run but you can't hide. AI-generated content from NZME During a July 16, 2025 Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium (Boston), Astronomer executives Andy Bryson and Kristin Cabot were unexpectedly filmed on the venue's kiss cam, sparking viral attention as they appeared very close on camera (e.g., hugging, whispering). Chris Martin quipped: 'Either they're having an affair or they're very shy,' which became symbolic of the moment's viral nature. In other news dominating the NZME homepage which reflects New Zealand current events, wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan dies aged 71. Natalia Cleland from Wellington's Downtown Community Ministry A new report warns that the number of homeless people in New Zealand has increased at a rate faster than New Zealand's population growth. Christopher Luxon from David Seymour's government Look, what I will say to you is that I'm in no mood to answer any frickin' questions about homelessness or anything else that is part of some media-generated beat-up campaign to discredit the government and the real gains we are making in inflation, in education, in health, and in boot camps, above all in boot camps, you should see them for yourselves, frightened children from bad houses are learning to make their beds and get yelled at if they don't, I'd like to see what Chris frickin' Hipkins think is a better idea, he landed us all in this mess in the first place, but all anyone wants to talk about is the widespread perception that I am some sort of frickin' weakling led around by his nose and that I have manifestly failed to inspire confidence in my leadership, so look let's all just change the subject and talk about the Astronomer affair scandal and how they more or less got busted frickin'.

An opportunity to flaunt the winter raiment of the 1930s Art Deco era comes with Winter Art Deco in Napier this weekend. Photo / NZME Two Winter Art Deco events scheduled for the new Art Deco Centre being established at the former Women's Rest rooms in Napier's Memorial Square have been moved because the facilities are not yet ready. It was a close call in hoping the renovation of the premises would be completed in time for the three-day festival starting on Friday. Art Deco Trust general manager Jeremy Smith conceded it had been a bit 'optimistic'. 'But we are only a couple of weeks away,' he said, confirming the trust expects to start moving out of its current site on the corner of Tennyson and Herschell Sts to relocate by the end of July, and be settled in for an official opening planned for late August. The Women's Rest, first opened in 1926, was closed to the public in 2013 because of seismic concerns. Shifted are Saturday daytime events the Fashion Flaunt, now to be held at Napier Stage and Gather, a hire venue at 126 Tennyson St, and the 40th anniversary showing of festival-inspiring documentary The Newest City on the Globe, now to be at the soon-to-be-vacated No 7 Tennyson St site.
