The heartbreaking reason Mysterious Girl singer Peter Andre became known as 'The Six Pack' in the 1990s: 'I never really told people'

Daily Mail07-05-2025
Peter Andre has gotten candid about his chart-topping six pack and how he used his much-talked about physique to hide his insecurities.
The Mysterious Girl hitmaker, 52, who is currently in Australia for the world premiere of his first feature film Jafaican, declined to show off his abs during a photo shoot on Wednesday and revealed the reason why.
'I used to get picked on a lot at school because I was Greek and had the big nose, the curly hair – I used to hate my nose,' he told The Advertiser.
He went on to confess that he felt so deeply about the way he looked that he grew his hair long to hide his face and turned away when photos were taken.
However, after he became known as 'The Six Pack', he realised there was another way to conceal his insecurities.
'I never really told people I used to train my a**e off so people would be looking at my body and wouldn't concentrate on my face' he said.
When he was living in Los Angeles in his 20s, the singer stumbled upon a picture of a well-known actor and realised that was the nose he wanted.
'I took a picture of Robert Downey Jr. - along with a picture of my sister Debbie because she always had a perfect nose - to a surgeon and said "Can you do this?"' Andrea revealed.
Now, since getting the operation, he has nothing to feel self-conscious about, keeping his shirt on ever since.
'I had the operation and he got rid of all the bits I hated' he explained.
It comes after Peter came under fire for wearing dreadlocks and putting on a Jamaican accent in the Jafaican trailer, which he posted to his social media in April.
The singer stars as lead character Gary Buckle in the crime-comedy which is set for release later this year.
Gary, also known as Gazza, must master Jamaican culture in 21 days in order to execute a fraud in London and Jamaica and earn the £35,000 he needs to pay for his grandmother's care.
Peter deleted his Tweet shortly after sharing the trailer after receiving the backlash as some fans questioned: 'Did I wake up in 1998?'
'Peter Andre starring as the lead character of a film called JAFAICAN where he's pretending to be a Jamaican and wearing a dreadlock wig is not something I was expecting to see in the year of our Lord 2025 but here we are...'
'There's a movie coming out with Peter Andre in a dreadlock wig pretending to be Jamaican. Is this really what we're doing in 2025?'
'Why on earth has YouTube just recommended me a trailer for a film starring Peter Andre about a man posing as a fake Jamaican? Did I wake up in 1998?'
One fan noticed Peter had deleted his tweet in light of the negative response and asked: 'So Peter Andre deleted his tweet, does that mean Jafaican is being scrapped?'
However the trailer didn't receive all negative comments after other social media users shared their excitement ahead of the film's release.
Peter first posted the trailer on his Instagram as he announced: 'The OFFICIAL trailer for JAFAICAN has just dropped! Coming to cinemas soon….'
Revealing his upcoming promo work for the film he confirmed the world premiere will be at the Gold Coast Film Festival on May 9 and teased that news on a UK premiere would be coming soon.
Excited fans penned: 'Peter that looks amazing can't wait to see this brilliant'; 'Oh yes!!!! looking forward to this @peterandre can't wait';
'I wish I could have watched this being filmed.'

Huge twist could see Jonathan LaPaglia RETURN as host of Australian Survivor after he was sensationally axed by Channel Ten

Jonathan LaPaglia may reprise his hosting role on Australian Survivor thanks to a technical twist. In June, the beloved TV personality confirmed he had been axed from the Channel Ten show after a decade at the helm, and this month it was revealed he would be replaced by former contestant David Genat. Fans have rallied around Jonathan in the wake of the news - even starting a petition to see him reinstated as host. And there may well be a glimmer of hope for the beloved host. According to Woman's Day, Channel Ten's rights to Australian Survivor will expire in 2026, and Channel Nine is already eyeing up the reality series. 'Network Ten's rights to Australian Survivor are set to expire next year and everyone is worried that the show could be snapped up by a rival network,' a TV producer told Woman's Day. This would not be the first time Channel Nine has nabbed a show from Ten. The network has acquired The Bachelor and The Golden Bachelor in recent years. Jonathan is said to already be in talks with Nine, who have 'promised' to reinstate him as frontman if they succeed. 'There's no doubt that Nine would bring back Jonathan LaPaglia and that would be the perfect way to make some noise and get the franchise back on track,' the insider added. 'I don't see this as the end of Jonathan's time in the Australian Survivor universe.' As it stands, Jonathan will front the show for the last time in the Australia V The World series, which will hit screens later this year. In a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph, he detailed the brutal way he found out he had lost his job. 'The speculation online was that I received an email. But no, it was a call to my manager in Australia,' he said. 'I didn't get a direct call, which, I'll be honest with you, was disappointing. 'After 10 years of helming their flagship show, it would have been nice to get a direct call from the people at the top, but I didn't.' Earlier this month, it was revealed that production was already underway for the 2026 season, with David taking over as the show's new host. David was recently spotted arriving overseas to begin filming the new season, but insiders have confirmed that 'behind the scenes', the dust is far from settling. 'It's a cost-cutting move, plain and simple,' a source close to production revealed. 'But replacing a seasoned host with a player who's barely earned his stripes? It's baffling.'

Kirsten Dunst puffs on cigarette in LA after admitting she wants to make a movie where she doesn't 'lose money'

Kirsten Dunst was spotted enjoying a smoke break outside a cafe in Los Angeles on Monday. The Interview with the Vampire star, 43, cut a casual figure as she puffed on a cigarette while out with a friend. The actress — who revealed that her son had a terrifying health scare in a candid new interview on Wednesday — sported a striped button-up blouse tucked into a pair of dark jeans with a black belt. Her casually chic look was completed with white sandals and a pair of black sunglasses. The Academy Award nominee wore her shoulder-length blonde hair down and parted on the side. It comes after the indie cinema icon — who's worked with influential directors like Sofia Coppola and Lars von Trier — expressed her desire to make a movie where she 'doesn't lose money.' Dunst even floated the idea of her joining the cast of Minecraft 2, after A Minecraft Movie — based on the popular video game — dominated the box office with $955 million worldwide. 'Maybe I can just make a movie where I don't lose money?' she told Town & Country in an interview published on Wednesday. A film like Minecraft 2 would be quite a departure for the star, who has usually opted for arthouse favorites over mainstream films. Even as an Oscar-nominated actress who has starred in countless mainstream movies, she remains beloved by fans for her work in indie films like The Virgin Suicides (1999) and Melancholia (2011). However, Dunst's successful career does include more commercial roles like The Spider-Man Trilogy (2002-2007), Bring It On (2000) and Jumanji (1995). Elsewhere in the new interview Dunst revealed that her young son James had a 'frightening' health scare while she was filming in Budapest earlier this year. The actress, who shares James, four, and Ennis, seven, with husband Jesse Plemons, 37, moved abroad for six months with her family to film The Entertainment System is Down - but 'very quickly' her youngest child became seriously ill. Dunst told Town & Country the terrifying time was like 'Final Destination, where you're imagining all the things that could go wrong, worst case scenarios happening to your child. 'I have never seen that movie. But I know the concept. That's how it feels to be a mother at times.' On Wednesday, Dunst shared in a new interview that she'd like to make a movie where she 'doesn't lose money', and floated the idea of joining the cast of Minecraft 2; Still from A Minecraft Movie Plemons and their sons had joined her in Budapest in January, with the plan for them to stay with Dunst for the entire filming duration and Ennis enrolled in school before James fell ill. Plemons later took their sons back to their 'extended support system' in Los Angeles while Dunst remained abroad - bar an April visit - to finish the film. While Dunst wouldn't be drawn on James' specific health condition, she stressed that he is doing fine now. She said the health scare 'brought us together as a family in such a deeper way' and revealed they will soon holiday in the Bahamas as they promised to take James 'anywhere he wanted to go.' The star previously opened up about James on Jimmy Kimmel Live in April 2024, saying: 'He's almost three and when he's bad we call him Jimmy. He's out of control. 'We actually call him baby Chris Farley because of the way he walks around and he's just hilarious. He's a crazy little dude.' Dunst and Plemons got together after starring in Fargo Season 2 in 2016, getting engaged in 2017. They married in 2022 in a secret ceremony in Jamaica. 'We fell in love creatively first,' Dunst gushed to the LA Times in 2021. 'He was like a creative soul mate to me and the way we both work. On Fargo, I knew after two weeks. 'I didn't remember saying this, but one of my best friends told me that I said to her that "I will know this man for the rest of my life. I just know it." 'Just because I felt such an immediate connection.'

Australian breakdancer Raygun is lampooned in a new musical but the Olympics fiasco was no comedy

Everyone can have a bad day at the office. But for most of us, it doesn't take place in front of millions of viewers at the world's biggest sporting event. Such was the lot of Rachael Gunn, AKA B-girl Raygun, who scored a memorable nul points for Australia at the Paris Olympics in 2024 with her routine topped off with a kangaroo hop. Gunn was pilloried on social media, partly over the quality of her dance (more on that later), but mostly just the usual sexist guff directed at any woman in the public eye deemed to be in the wrong. A year later, the pile-on continues: this time in musical theatre form at Breaking the Musical, an Edinburgh fringe comedy that is either a funny bit of bants or a cruel character assassination, depending on your point of view. The cardinal sin Gunn appears to have committed in Aussie comedian and writer Steph Broadbridge's eyes is not being able to laugh at herself. A version of the show was cancelled in Sydney in December after receiving notice from Gunn's lawyers. As Broadbridge told the New York Times, the jokes then got meaner, legal action became part of the show, the protagonist's name became Spraygun and they called it fiction. It's a very silly and not unentertaining show (especially, I imagine, if you are Australian – there are a fair few niche jokes), but I did feel sorry for Gunn. Spraygun is painted as an entitled rich girl who is deluded thinking she could get to the Olympics, cheats her way into the squad and robs Australia of its dignity in front of the rest of the world. One rumour at the time was that Gunn's husband had been on the selection panel but that's not true. The way the overall selection process was designed, there were spots for the hosts, world championship winners and top dancers from a series of qualifying competitions, plus one from each continent's own championship, which is how Gunn got on the squad. The Oceania B-girl scene is clearly not as developed as other regions worldwide in large part because if its size (only 0.6% of the global population.) So, yes, she was lucky, and better breakers from all over the world missed out, but it wasn't Gunn's fault. It's also worth saying there are fantastic dancers who don't believe in breaking as a sport and may not have entered anyway. (No dancers from the UK qualified, male or female.) Against the world's best, Gunn was out of her depth, but was she really that bad? If you watch all her rounds, she'd definitely outdance 99% of the trolls ridiculing her. She had a few power moves (headspins, backspins) and freezes. Floorwork in breaking is difficult, and it's not always graceful. Sure, her style's a bit awkward – the new wave of teen B-girls are much more agile and athletic than the older generation – so she leant on humour, personality, idiosyncrasy, which are all legitimate parts of battle culture. Especially by the final round when she had no chance to get through, she just tried to have some fun. She didn't quite pull it off, but that's live improvisation for you. Breaking the Musical has a big problem with the fact that the dancer is white and middle class. 'Be an ally, stick to ballet' goes a line in one song. It's a neat half-rhyme, but are we really gatekeeping who's allowed to do what kind of dance? It's imperative to acknowledge breaking's Black American and Latino roots, and to consider access of opportunity and training and funding structures that may disadvantage certain groups, but hip-hop is a global art form now, with some of the best dancers coming from China and Japan. It used to be that you could only learn on the streets, in the community, or by crossing the country to train directly with others. Now young dancers teach themselves in their bedroom from YouTube. It's an expanding culture but that's a mark of the art form's phenomenal success. There's also a lot of mockery that Gunn has a PhD and that her thesis was on gender in hip-hop dance. So hip-hop culture isn't worthy of academic study, you say? Broadbridge would probably think I'm being over-earnest. What's most sad about the whole fiasco is that breaking is already out of the Olympics, without the event having time to bed in and iron out any of the flaws. It hasn't been chosen for the 2028 Los Angeles Games and we'll have to wait and see for Brisbane 2032. The hoo-ha over Raygun's performance (rather than the performance itself) overshadowed the top-level artists. Does anyone even remember who won? Breaking the Musical is at Pleasance Dome, Edinburgh, until 24 August
