Max to be renamed HBO Max, fixing the name change nobody wanted
Two years after Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) rebranded its streaming service to Max, the company is reverting to its old name. On Wednesday, the company announced the good news at its Upfront presentation, with the name change becoming official this summer.
When Max launched in 2023, the revamped platform was positioned as a win for subscribers, giving them access to 35,000 hours of entertainment, as well as new features, an updated interface, and overall better performance.
The name change was made to eliminate confusion, as the HBO Max streaming service included not only HBO content but also programming from all WBD-owned networks, such as CNN, the Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, TLC, and more. Additionally, this change was meant to broaden its appeal beyond adult viewers, incorporating more family-friendly titles from Discovery.
Despite these intentions, many viewers criticized the name change. Now, it seems that WBD has reevaluated its approach. Instead of focusing on a large volume of diverse content, the streaming service is prioritizing quality programming.
During the WBD Upfront, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, said, 'With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognized as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.'
The shift comes after WBD reportedly removed hundreds of hours of titles earlier this month, such as several '90 Day' spin-offs and 'Ghost Adventures,' according to a Reddit post. So it appears that Discovery's reality shows, initially intended to boost the Max name, didn't drive enough engagement for the streamer after all.
Nonetheless, HBO Max continues to be one of the top streaming services. The company touted its growth in the announcement, reporting an addition of 22 million subscribers in the past year, keeping it on track to reach over 150 million by 2026.

Early on Thursday morning, mere hours after the chain went viral for what it called a "difficult decision" to close several storefronts across multiple states, Hooters reiterated that the restaurant company isn't going anywhere and it intends to bring back what "initially drove its success" in the first place: the original uniforms and recipes. The iconic wing spot said the sudden closure of company-owned stores in several states on Wednesday, June 4, was part of a larger restructuring plan that will allow more than 100 company-owned Hooters restaurants to continue serving fans today and going forward. HOA explained in the June 5 announcement that by transferring the company-owned restaurants to this group of operators, which it said is comprised of "existing Hooters franchisees, including the original Hooters founders" and people who have "each been in the Hooters system for over 30 years," it will put the rest of the company-owned restaurants "in the hands of the best possible operators to maximize their future success." Not only that, but the Buyer Group said it intends to "return Hooters to the core principles that initially drove its success, including some of its original recipes and original Hooters Girls uniforms." "We are confident that the acquisition will be finalized later this summer and we are excited to move forward into the next chapter of the Hooters brand," Neil Kiefer, CEO of Hooters Inc. said in a statement on behalf of the Buyer Group. "Decisions about store closures are never easy to make but all parties are completely aligned in bringing the necessary resources required to make the remaining 200 domestic Hooters locations as successful as possible." "The Buyer Group has been extremely impressed with the restaurant-level employees of the restaurants they are acquiring and are excited to welcome them into the Hooters Inc. and Attila Wings organizations," the statement concluded. The acquisition of Hooters of America is expected to conclude by the end of the summer and the companies say that after the transaction has been finalized, it will still operate approximately 200 domestic Hooters restaurants (or about 65 percent of all Hooters locations in the U.S.) and an additional 60 restaurants around the world. When Is ‘A Minecraft Movie' Coming To Streaming On Max?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that Jack Black and Jason Momoa's A Minecraft Movie would begin streaming on Max in June. However, we're a week and a half into June and A Minecraft Movie still has no release date on the Max streaming service, which will renamed HBO Max this summer. News broke on May 21 that A Minecraft Movie was part Max's new lineup of programming in June. The move was surprising given the expediency of the release coming to the streaming service, considering the film opened in theaters on April 4 and made its debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 13. Georgetown County prepares for inaugural Juneteenth Festival
GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)–Georgetown County is preparing to host its first-ever Juneteenth Festival this Saturday, an all-day event honoring freedom, culture, and Black excellence. Held at the Georgetown County Library, the celebration will feature storytelling, live music, games, food vendors, and more, all designed to spotlight local Black-owned businesses and cultural traditions. 'Juneteenth is excellence, power, resilience… just a whole lot of strength in the community highlighting Black excellence,' said Whitley Snipes, owner of Nobu Wellness. One of the main attractions will be the Black Business Expo, showcasing vendors from across the county. 'It'll feature all Black-owned businesses from Georgetown County, selling their products, sharing their stories, and showcasing their excellence,' said Jo'Vonna Davis, Social Media Manager for the library. Visitors can also enjoy performances from local bands, Legend Gullah Storytellers by Ron and Natalie Daise, and a hands-on sweetgrass basket workshop led by Jennifaye Singleton. Snipes says events like this are vital to building stronger communities. 'Sure, we've got big franchises—but being local means you connect more, build real relationships, and we all grow together. That's powerful.' Organizers say the festival is not only a celebration but also a chance to learn, connect, and support one another. 'I hope folks walk away understanding what Juneteenth truly means and maybe even discover a new favorite Black-owned business to support,' said Davis.
