Venice Biennale to honour late curator Koyo Kouoh with 2026 exhibition

Euronews27-05-2025
The curatorial vision for the 61st Venice Biennale, 'In Minor Keys', was revealed in Venice today in an emotional presentation at the Sala delle Colonne of Ca' Giustinian, the Biennale's historic headquarters.
Originally set for announcement later this year, the theme was unveiled ahead of schedule following the sad and unexpected death of the exhibition's curator, Koyo Kouoh, on 10 May.
A leading figure in promoting Pan-Africanism throughout the art world, Kouoh had served as executive director and chief curator at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, South Africa since 2019.
She earned global acclaim for curating the 2022 exhibition When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, a monumental historical show inspired by Ava DuVernay's Netflix miniseries When They See Us, and became the first African woman invited to lead the Venice Art Biennale in December 2024.
With the support of Kouoh's family, La Biennale di Venezia confirmed it will proceed with the 2026 exhibition exactly as she conceived it, in what will now be a posthumous tribute to her life's work.
As they noted, the edition will explore the spaces in which minor keys operate, to conceive "an exhibition that invites listening to the persistent signals of earth and life, connecting to soul frequencies. If in music, the minor keys are often associated with strangeness, melancholy, and sorrow, here their joy, solace, hope, and transcendence manifest as well."
Scheduled to run from 9 May to 22 November 2026, 'In Minor Keys' will take place across the Giardini, the Arsenale, and various venues throughout Venice.
The full list of participating artists, the exhibition's visual identity, and national pavilions will be officially announced at a press conference on 25 February 2026.

Harry and Meghan extend Netflix deal amid plans for new content

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have renewed their partnership with Netflix in a fresh multi-year deal, continuing their collaboration through Archewell Productions. The couple say the agreement reflects their mission to create 'thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally.' The Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed the extension on Monday (11 August), with Netflix gaining first-look rights on upcoming projects. The renewed deal includes the return of "With Love, Meghan", a lifestyle and cooking series starring the Duchess of Sussex, as well as a new documentary short Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, which centres on an orphanage in Uganda. 'My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision,' Meghan said in a statement. Also on the slate is Meet Me at the Lake, a feature adaptation of Carley Fortune's romantic novel about a decade-spanning love story sparked by a chance encounter. A post shared by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (@meghan) This latest agreement is a continuation of Harry and Meghan's post-royal streaming ventures, which began with a widely publicised Netflix partnership in 2020 – reported at the time to be worth around $100 million (€86.2 million). Previous Archewell-produced projects for the streaming platform include the docuseries Harry & Meghan, Heart of Invictus, Live to Lead, and Polo. Bela Bajaria, Netflix's chief content officer, praised the couple's storytelling efforts: 'Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. The response to their work speaks for itself.' But not all of that response has been glowing. While Harry & Meghan performed strongly with 23.4 million viewers following its 2022 debut, "With Love, Meghan" has had a rockier journey. Despite being billed by Netflix as its most-watched culinary show this year, it pulled in just 5.3 million views – placing it outside the platform's top 300 most-viewed shows in the first half of 2025. Critics did not hold back. Reviews of the first series called the show 'out of touch', and its polished, curated aesthetic drew ridicule across social media platforms. Memes and TikToks poked fun at the former actress's on-screen persona, with some viewers calling the series overly staged. Still, Netflix is backing a second season – set to air later this month – as well as a holiday special in December, inviting audiences to 'join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration.' The series is also linked to her lifestyle brand, As Ever, which includes products like rosé wine and jams.

Streaming's new pirates: 'We're not a big network of cybercriminals, just two high schoolers having fun'

At his school in Saint-Etienne, in east-central France, @Fidel – one of his online pseudonyms – has the usual concerns of a ninth grader. As the school year drew to a close, he prepared for his end-of-year exams and reassured himself by thinking about the excellent score (90 out of 100) he received in the mock math test. To unwind, this 15 year old is one of the few in his group to play badminton in his free time. His friends at school prefer the video game Roblox. And while @Fidel also sometimes spent hours each day in front of his laptop, it's not for gaming: From his bedroom, which he has to himself in the family apartment, he manages an illegal streaming site. On this site – let's call it "Vizix" (the name has been changed) – French internet users can watch thousands of pirated movies and series without downloading them. In a player similar to those on YouTube or Dailymotion, videos load in French or in the original language with subtitles, often in very good quality. Most of the content comes from paid platforms (Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+), but a few films still in theaters can also be found: Minecraft, Mission: Impossible and Lilo & Stitch were among the "trending" titles in May. The only catch is that each video is preceded by an ad, which can be disabled with a €2 monthly subscription.
