Man arrested in UP after 24 years on the run for Palghar murder
NEW DELHI: Police have arrested a man absconding for the last 24 years after being accused in a case of murder in Maharashtra's Palghar district, officials said on Sunday.
The authorities captured the 50-year-old suspect, Mamu alias Chhote alias Babuon Omprakash Shrisahuni Diwakar, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on April 27, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Madan Ballal.
On January 14, 2001, an individual named Moharram Ali Mohammad Ibrahim Ali, aged 46, suffered a fatal stomach wound from a sharp weapon in Virar area.
The Virar police filed charges against Harun Ali Mustaqin Ali Syed and Mamu under Indian Penal Code section 302 for murder, as stated by Ballal.
The incident stemmed from a disagreement over unpaid autorickshaw fares. The victim frequently used the accused persons' autorickshaws from a nearby hardware shop but allegedly failed to pay for the services.
The dispute intensified, resulting in the stabbing incident, according to Ballal.
Although Syed was arrested initially, Mamu escaped and remained hidden for 24 years.
"The accused disappeared and the case went cold for over two decades. Tracking someone after 24 years is no easy task, but we never gave up," Ballal said, adding the police started reinvestigating the case earlier this year.
"We began identifying autorickshaw drivers from that time and cross-checking with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) records.

Police have lodged an FIR against sitting Congress councillor Sameer Dutta and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Amarbir Singh Sandhu following the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana high court for allegedly duping an NRI woman and fraudulently selling her property. On Saturday, the police registered the FIR at Civil Lines police station, under Sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 82 of the Registration Act against the accused. The complainant, Manpreet Kaur Sandhu, a Canadian citizen, said she had lodged a complaint in connection with the case in 2022 but no action was taken by police at that time. On Saturday, the police registered the FIR at Civil Lines police station, under Sections 420 (cheating), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 82 of the Registration Act against the accused. 'My brother-in-law Amarbir Singh Sandhu and his associate Sameer Dutta fraudulently took possession of my property after the death of my husband, who died of brain cancer in 2021, and sold parts of it without my consent. When I learnt about it, I came to India and filed a police complaint against them. Despite repeated appeals, no action was taken by police. Finally, I approached the high court, which directed the police to register the FIR.' Odisha horror: Two separate rape cases of minor girls lodged in Malkangiri; rape victim delivers stillborn
NEW DELHI: Two separate rape cases have been reported from Odisha's Malkangiri district, with police confirming the arrest of two persons. In one of the cases, the survivor delivered a stillborn baby, according to PTI. According to Additional SP Rashmiranjan Senapati, the first incident occurred on July 20 in a village under Orkel police station. A 50-year-old man allegedly offered a girl a lift while she was on her way to her uncle's house and instead took her to a forested area where he raped her. The survivor informed her family the following day. After villagers failed to act, her uncle filed a police complaint on Saturday. 'As the villagers could not take any action, I took the matter to the police,' he said in the complaint. The accused was arrested the next day, police confirmed. The second incident was reported from the Mudulipada police station area. According to police, the survivor had allegedly been raped since 2024. The case surfaced after she gave birth to a stillborn baby at a government hospital. Following a complaint by her family, the accused was arrested.
