'Coolie' box office collection Day 7: Rajinikanth starrer secures win over 'War 2'; ends week 1 with Rs 222.5 crore haul

Time of India16 hours ago
Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' has wrapped up its first week at the box office on a strong note, collecting an estimated Rs 222.5 crore net in India. Despite facing weekday dips, the film has reaffirmed the superstar's dominance at the ticket window.
Blockbuster box office opening
Released on August 14, 'Coolie' stormed into cinemas with an impressive Rs 65 crore opening day haul, driven by Rajinikanth's unmatched fan frenzy. According to a report on Sacnilk, by the end of Friday, just two days into release, the film had already crossed the Rs 100 crore mark, notching up a total of Rs 119.75 crore.
Weekend dip in collections
The extended Independence Day weekend added fuel to the film's momentum. On Saturday, the film collected an estimated Rs 39.5 crore, followed by Rs 35.25 crore on Sunday, pushing its four-day total to Rs 194.5 crore.
By its first Monday, the film surged past the Rs 200 crore milestone, though with a noticeable slowdown, earning Rs 12 crore.
Weekday decline in ticket sales
Post-Monday, the film's collections saw sharp drops. On Tuesday, it managed to rake in just around Rs 9.5 crore, and by Wednesday, the earnings dipped further to Rs 6.5 crore, bringing its Week 1 net total to Rs 222.5 crore.
Rajinikanth's biggest box office hits
With this, 'Coolie' is now Rajinikanth's third-biggest grosser in India.
His sci-fi epic 2.0 remains untouchable at the top with Rs 407.05 crore net, followed by Jailer with Rs 348.55 crore.
Worldwide collections
According to trade reports on IMDB, the film's all-India gross stands at Rs 260.6 crore, while its overseas business has brought in Rs 162.2 crore. This takes Coolie's worldwide total to a massive Rs 422.8 crore within its first week. Made on a budget of Rs 350 crore, the film has already recovered costs and is now in clear profit territory.
Clash with War 2
What makes this feat more remarkable is that Coolie has managed to achieve it despite a direct clash with Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2. While Coolie surged past the Rs 220 crore mark, War 2 is estimated to have ended the week slightly lower at around Rs 199 crore, highlighting Rajinikanth's box office dominance.

Coolie Extended Week 1 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's crime-drama grosses an average Rs 261 crore in 8 days

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth, fell flat at the box office after its extended opening weekend at the India box office, where it shattered all existing Kollywood records. After packing an India weekend in the range of Rs 220 crore, the movie started falling freely, to a point where the day 8 estimated collections are Rs 5.50 crore. Coolie Adds Around Rs 5.50 Crore On Day 8, To End Extended Week 1 Grossing Rs 261 Crore Coolie 's total collections after its extended week 1 stand at Rs 261 crore, and a lifetime of Rs 300 crore seems almost impossible. With a good word of mouth, the movie could have broken past the Rs 400 crore India gross mark with ease, but that has not happened. Coolie has shown what mixed to negative word of mouth can do to your film. The Day Wise India Box Office Collection of Coolie is as follows: Day Gross Thursday Rs. 75.50 cr. Friday Rs. 63.00 cr. Saturday Rs. 46.25 cr. Sunday Rs. 40.50 cr. Monday Rs. 13.00 cr. Tuesday Rs. 10.00 cr. Wednesday Rs. 7.25 cr. Thursday Rs 5.50 cr. (est) Total Rs. 261 cr. gross in 8 days Coolie Looks To End Its Global Run Under Rs 500 Crore Worldwide The collections of Coolie from the overseas box office also leave a lot left to be desired. The movie, after a record opening of USD 8 million and an exceptional weekend of USD 16.75 million, looked set for a finish in the north of USD 25 million. But the frequent drops over the weekdays, have put, even a finish of USD 20 million in jeopardy. A film that was expected to be an all time record Kollywood grosser at the worldwide box office, will end as the 5th or 6th highest grossing film, only due to the word of mouth. Coolie should be a lesson for Kollywood filmmakers, about the extent to which their movie can be affected if it gets underwhelming word of mouth. If collections are seen standalone, a Tamil movie ending up doing over Rs 450 crore worldwide is no small feat. But when you realise that the distributors purchased the film for a ratio of Rs 600 crore, you realise that the movie has severely underperformed. Coolie In Theatres

War 2 Extended Week 1 India Box Office: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani starrer grosses dismal Rs 231 crore gross in 8 days

War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, ended its extended week 1, dropping again. The movie has roughly added Rs 5 crore gross more at the India box office, to end with collections of Rs 231 crore after 8 days. The Hindi version of War 2 is propelling the collections while the dubbed versions are down and out. War 2 won't be able to make most of the open week that it has. If the film got a favourable word of mouth, the collections in week 2 would be exceptional. Alas, that has not happened. A final India gross of Rs 275 crore is also not guaranteed based on the poor trend. In the post pandemic, YRF has just had two resounding blockbusters in the form of Pathaan and Saiyaara, and a hit in the form of Tiger 3. The other movies are all flops and disasters. What's interesting is that YRF, despite more failures than successes in the post-pandemic era, has profited well. Saiyaara has been their biggest money-spinner, taking care of all the other losses. The Day Wise Gross India Collections Of War 2 Are Are Under Day India Gross Collections Thursday Rs 59 crore Friday Rs 67 crore Saturday Rs 38 crore Sunday Rs 36 crore Monday Rs 9.50 crore Tuesday Rs 10.50 crore Wednesday Rs 6 crore Thursday Rs 5 crore Total Rs 231 crore gross in 8 days War 2 Has Resulted In A Loss Of Around Rs 30 Crore For YRF War 2's losses are around Rs 30 crore for YRF, unless they bear a part of the losses incurred by the Andhra distributor. If they do bear a part of the losses that the Andhra distributor incurs, then the biggest loser of the movie will be Hrithik Roshan, who took a lower upfront amount than his prevailing market value, so that he could have a share in the profits if the film works. Since the movie hasn't worked, he won't get any backend profits.

Coolie vs War 2 Week 1 India Box Office Comparison: Rajinikanth's movie remains in lead but both films fail to live up to their hype

The Coolie vs War 2 clash was one of the most talked about events on social media. Both the hyped movies were expected to put up some insane box office numbers at the box office, but that has not happened. However, Coolie is much better placed than its rival release War 2, which is a sureshot loss making venture, even for producers. Coolie Ends Extended Week 1 Grossing Rs 261 Crore In India; War 2 Only Manages Rs 231 Crore After 8 days, the gross collections of Coolie in India stand at around Rs 261 crore. War 2, which is a much bigger film that Coolie, has grossed Rs 30 crore lower than Coolie and this is, most likely expected to be the end difference between both movies at the India box office too. Coolie may not be fortunate to get a clean hit due to very high acquisition costs, but the collections are pretty much there to be called a hit. War 2, apart from being a major loss making proposition for its Andhra distributor, doesn't even have the collections to boast about, like Coolie, to an extent, does. The Day Wise India Gross Box Office Comparison between Coolie and War 2 Are As Under Day Coolie War 2 Thursday Rs 75.50 crore Rs 59 crore Friday Rs 63 crore Rs 67 crore Saturday Rs 46.25 crore Rs 38 crore Sunday Rs 40.50 crore Rs 36 crore Monday Rs 13 crore Rs 9.50 crore Tuesday Rs 10 crore Rs 10.50 crore Wednesday Rs 7.25 crore Rs 6 crore Thursday Rs 5.50 crore (est) Rs 5 crore The Coolie Vs War 2 Clash Analysed In Terms Of Profit In War 2, apart from YRF and the Andhra distributor losing, Hrithik Roshan will walk away earning less than half of his market value. In case of Coolie, the distributors, on an average, will lose 20 percent. The producers will end up in profits. Rajinikanth and Lokesh will get their ask amount of Rs 150 crore and Rs 50 crore respectively. The clash, in terms of collections, has been won by Coolie. But realistically, it is a clash where no one really won. Coolie And War 2 In Theatres Coolie and War 2 play in theatres. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
