Pune to host Tour de France-model annual cycling race from next year
Modelled on internationally acclaimed races like the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, the cycling event will cover over 600 kilometers across urban, rural, and hilly terrains of the district, including Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Baramati, Mulshi, Maval, Bhor, and Velhe, authorities said.
The announcement came after the Pune district administration and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was present at the event, said the annual event will establish Pune as a key destination on the global sports calendar.
CM Fadnavis stated, 'Through the Pune Grand Challenge Tour, we are organising a world-class cycling competition. This will help present Pune's rich culture, traditions, and natural beauty to a worldwide audience. The event will not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also attract massive investments in tourism and industry'.
Pune Grand Challenge was conceived from Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi's visionary Integrated Tourism Development Plan, designed to transform lesser-known talukas of Pune into vibrant tourism destinations. Infrastructure development has already begun in over 200 villages along the route, including road upgrades, health facilities, and digital connectivity, said an officer.
A dedicated mobile app and digital platforms will offer real-time updates, tourist guides, and immersive experiences for viewers and participants, he added.
Thousands of professional and amateur cyclists are expected to participate, and over 10,000 spectators are anticipated. According to the district's Integrated Tourism Development Plan, the event is expected to generate around Rs 1,000 crore in tourism revenue in its inaugural year. The initiative also aims to create over 50,000 direct jobs and support lakhs of livelihoods through tourism-related activities, rural homestays, and local crafts.
The event has been recognised by the Cycling Federation of India. It is currently awaiting UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) accreditation which could soon place it on the UCI World Tour calendar. The event will be promoted globally through tie-ups with broadcasters such as Star Sports and Eurosport, and is expected to reach a worldwide audience of over 10 crore viewers.
The state government is also working with corporate sponsors like Tata, Bajaj, and the Poonawalla Group to fund the event through public-private partnerships.

Only in the final stage did Pogacar spring back to life in a ride resembling a one-day classic, during which he fought an epic duel with Belgian Wout van Aert. While he did not win, the joy of racing was briefly back as the world champion found a challenge at his measure. Through the first two weeks, Pogacar appeared unstoppable, claiming four stage wins, putting the hammer down on the climb to Hautacam and adding a dominant performance in the uphill time trial on Stage 13. That victory stretched his lead over Jonas Vingegaard to more than four minutes, reinforcing his position as the man to beat. His early attacks were bold, his energy seemingly endless. Last Updated: Maharashtra plans to launch an app-based transport service to compete with Uber, Ola, and Rapido. Possible names include Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, or Maha-Go. Uber, Ola, Rapido and other ride-hailing businesses will soon witness a new competitor in Maharashtra as the Devendra Fadnavis government is considering to launch its own app-based transport service. People will be able to book autorickshaws, taxis, and e-bikes in the state through this application. The new government-run app is likely to be named Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, or Maha-Go, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said. However, the launch of the government app is yet to get approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. 'To develop the app, discussions are underway with the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and MITRA, along with private firms. The app will include all necessary provisions to maintain transparency and will be developed soon," Sarnaik said. Under this initiative, the minister said special financial assistance will be provided to unemployed youth to purchase vehicles at an interest rate of just 10 per cent. 'Mumbai Bank Chairman Praveen Darekar assured that this initiative will enable financial aid to reach deserving candidates. Additionally, government corporations such as Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Vimukta Jati Corporation, OBC Corporation, and MSDC will provide an 11 per cent interest subsidy, making the loan effectively interest-free," he said. Sarnaik also mentioned that the app's policy framework is in the final stage, in line with the Central Government's Aggregator Guidelines. He criticised private companies for exploiting both drivers and passengers through unauthorised apps. 'With sufficient infrastructure, technology, and manpower, the government's app will benefit both passengers and drivers," he emphasised. A final review meeting on the app is scheduled for August 5 at Mantralaya, with MLA Praveen Darekar, technical experts, and government officials expected to attend. Earlier this month, the minister warned app-based transport businesses, saying buses, cars and bike taxis operating in the state must follow the rules and regulations. He has also given directions to officials to take strict legal action against any private transport services –whether buses, cars or bike taxis– that violate regulations.
