MIRI (Aug 18): Over 1,585 Kenyalang Gold Cards (KGC) were issued at a mobile service organised by the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau branch from Aug 16-17.
The two-day event also saw 1,635 Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB) application forms received.
SUPP Piasau branch chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting said on Aug 16, a total of 835 KGCs were issued while 775 SCHB application forms were received, while 750 KGCs were issued and 860 SCHB application forms were received on Aug 17.
'This event is part of the Sarawak government's effort to provide practical support to senior citizens, which shows their concern for public health and social welfare.
'The main purpose of introducing the KGC is to enable senior citizens aged 60 and above to enjoy a variety of facilities and special discounts from the government, agencies and businesses. The SCHB scheme provides assistance of RM500 per year for healthcare purposes, helping to ease the medical costs for this group,' he said.
'Programmes like this not only help recipients economically, but also ensures everyone can experience the love and care of the community as the value of community care has become increasingly important.'
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts stressed the state government would continue to strengthen grassroots services to ensure every form of assistance reaches those in need.
Ting also urged the community to make full use of these welfare facilities, and hoped more parties and business operators will work together with the government to build a caring society.

Miri toddler has successful cochlear implant surgery

Yvonne rests in her mother's arms after the surgery. MIRI (Aug 19): Yvonne Yaw, the 22-month-old profoundly deaf toddler, successfully underwent life-changing cochlear implant surgery at Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) Kuching on Aug 16. The toddler made headlines last month after her parents went public to raise money to cover the surgery costs. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting told the media yesterday that Yvonne's father shared the joyful news to him after the surgery. Ting, who is also Miri City Cochlear Implant Society chairman, said the procedure went smoothly under the medical team's expertise, and Yvonne's condition was 'stable and recovering well'. 'The family wishes to convey their heartfelt gratitude to the public, as without the overwhelming generosity from kind-hearted donors, the operation would not have been possible,' he said. Yvonne was diagnosed to be profoundly deaf due to congenital bilateral absence of chocleae. The fundraising campaign, which was launched by Ting, exceeded expectations by raising RM122,765.05. 'Of this amount, RM95,000 was used to cover the cost of the cochlear device while the remaining funds have been entrusted to the family for post-surgery medical care and living expenses. 'This is truly a heart-warming story. The selfless generosity from members of the community have given this little girl and her family new hope, and reflects the compassion and solidarity of the people of Miri and Sarawak as a whole,' he said. Ting said Yvonne would continue to be monitored at the hospital and begin rehabilitation therapy to gradually develop her hearing and speech. cochlear implant surgery lead Sebastian Ting Yvonne Yaw

SUPP will continue pushing for S'wak Cancer Centre's development, says Engkilili branch chairman

Kua Jack Seng KUCHING (Aug 18): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Engkilili branch yesterday said that Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong's attempt to stir up the issue about the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre's progress was uncalled for. Its chairman Kua Jack Seng, who is also a political secretary to the Premier, said the Sarawak government had already outlined its development plan for the centre, which had been tabled at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur. 'The necessary steps are being pursued progressively. 'Unfortunately, Violet Yong continues to shout slogans such as 'the government should announce progress' as if she were the first to discover that Sarawak has cancer patients,' he said in a statement yesterday. Kua questioned what Democratic Action Party (DAP) had done for Sarawak when it was part of the federal government back then. 'The cancer centre is indeed an urgent need. But the real question is this — when DAP was part of the federal government, what exactly did Violet Yong and her colleagues do to fight for Sarawak's healthcare facilities? 'Even when Sarawak General Hospital's (SGH) oncology department was overwhelmed and hospital beds were insufficient, where was she then? Or is this simply a case of selective amnesia?' he asked. He said the Sarawak government was already in the preparatory phase and awaiting federal funding support, as far as the proposed centre was concerned. He found it ironic that Yong insisted there should be no further delays, adding: 'Her DAP colleagues in the federal cabinet were themselves the very embodiment of delays.' Kua pointed out that Sarawakians needed builders, not political loudspeakers who repeated the same lines. 'SUPP will continue to push for the cancer centre's implementation to ensure that Sarawakians receive proper medical facilities instead of being treated to political theatrics.' On Saturday, Yong had called for an update on the proposed Sarawak Cancer Centre, urging the state government to keep Sarawakians informed as the centre was a life-saving necessity, especially since the SGH's oncology unit was stretched beyond capacity.
