Mint2 days ago
Mumbai, Equity benchmark indices declined in early trade on Wednesday after a four-day rally tracking weak trends in Asian markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 146.64 points to 81,497.75 in initial trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 47.5 points to 24,933.15.
From the Sensex firms, Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Tata Motors were among the laggards.
However, Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Infosys and NTPC were among the gainers.
In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng quoted lower.
The US markets ended mostly lower on Tuesday.
Investors turned their attention towards US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's forthcoming statements at the Jackson Hole Symposium and minutes from the Fed's recent meeting.
Rising for the fourth trading day in a row on Tuesday, the Sensex edged higher by 370.64 points or 0.46 per cent to settle at 81,644.39. The Nifty climbed 103.70 points or 0.42 per cent to 24,980.65.
"The rally in the Nifty came in response to the unexpected announcements relating to GST reforms, which are likely to happen before Diwali. The market has been responding to the potential demand boost to sectors like automobiles, FMCG, insurance, and select financials, which are expected to benefit from the GST rationalisation.
"Improvement in India-China relations has also contributed to the rally. However, there is no scope for a sustained rally since the August 27th deadline for the 25 per cent secondary tariff on India is fast approaching," VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said.
Foreign Institutional Investors offloaded equities worth ₹ 634.26 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.11 per cent to USD 65.86 a barrel.

Is Trump Ready To Risk Key Ally India For His America-First Agenda? Nikki Haley Sounds Alarm

Washington: 'To achieve America's foreign policy goals of outcompeting China, few objectives are more critical than getting relations between Washington and New Delhi back on track,' wrote Nikki Haley, U.S. President Donald Trump's fellow Republican and former U.N. ambassador, in an op-ed for Newsweek. She urged that India must be treated 'like the prized free and democratic partner that it is, not an adversary like China, which has thus far avoided sanctions for its Russian oil purchases, despite being one of Moscow's largest customers'. She warned that undoing decades of diplomatic momentum with the only Asian power capable of balancing Beijing would be a 'strategic disaster'. She also highlighted India's role in shifting supply chains away from China. 'While the Trump administration works to bring manufacturing back to our shores, India stands alone in its potential to manufacture at a China-like scale for products that cannot be quickly or efficiently produced here, like textiles, inexpensive phones and solar panels,' she said. Add Zee News as a Preferred Source Haley described New Delhi as a 'crucial asset to the free world's security', stressing that unlike authoritarian China, a rising democratic India strengthens the global order. Trump, however, has unsettled both allies and critics by threatening to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for importing discounted oil from Russia. The measure comes on top of a similar levy already rolled out this month, taking the total duty to 50 per cent. Once hailed as Washington's counterweight to China, New Delhi now finds itself grouped with Brazil, whose President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has already threatened retaliation. Beijing, the largest buyer of Russian crude, has been spared from similar penalties. 'Biggest Mistake' Geopolitical analyst Fareed Zakaria joined the wave of criticism. Speaking to CNN, he called the tariff push 'America's biggest foreign policy mistake', warning that even if Trump walks back the decision, 'the damage is done'. According to him, India now views the United States as 'unreliable, its willingness to be brutal to those whom it calls its friends' and may deepen its ties with Russia while easing tensions with China. 'Stupidest Tactical Move' Economist Jeffrey Sachs struck a similar note. On 'Breaking Points' with Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti, he said the White House is effectively binding the BRICS bloc closer together. He branded the tariffs 'the stupidest tactical move in U.S. foreign policy' and labelled Trump 'the great unifier of BRICS'. 'Tariff Tantrum' The pushback has reached Capitol Hill as well. Senior Congressman Gregory Meeks, a Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, denounced the policy as a 'tariff tantrum' that risks dismantling over two decades of strategic, economic and cultural ties. 'We have deep strategic, economic and people-to-people ties. Concerns should be addressed in a mutually respectful way consistent with our democratic values,' he said.

Cheema demands ₹50,000 cr from Centre over GST losses

letterschd@ Agreeing to the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate cuts, the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Thursday demanded that the Centre should release ₹ 50,000 crore to Punjab to compensate the state for the loss it suffered due to the indirect tax regime. Chandigarh : Agreeing to the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate cuts, the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Thursday demanded that the Centre should release ₹50,000 crore to Punjab to compensate the state for the loss it suffered due to the indirect tax regime. After a meeting of the group of ministers (GoM) on the GST, Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that the GST inflicted a ₹1.11-lakh crore loss on Punjab as the Centre released only ₹60,000 crore so far. Over ₹50,000 crore and ₹8,000 crore Rural Development Fund (RDF) remain due, he said, adding the state would not have suffered such massive revenue losses had it not joined the 'One Nation-One Tax' scheme. 'With the compensation cess now scrapped, the BJP government is deliberately wrecking state economies to make them beg before the Centre,' he alleged at a press conference in Delhi. Cheema said that GST was introduced in 2017, and there have been 27 amendments in GST in the past eight years, with exemptions given to different sectors, and rates were revised 15 times. 'Since the GST was introduced, the central government has kept making one amendment after another, but never reached a conclusion. Taxpayers are being harassed continuously. The system of the country is being destroyed. Several states are continuously losing revenue due to the GST system. The central government has backed away from making up for this loss,' he claimed. Detailing the latest discussions, Cheema said: 'In Thursday's meeting on compensation cess, the central government said that the loans taken to pay states under compensation cess would be fully repaid by October. On harmful goods (sin goods), a special tax was imposed. The states suffering losses in its collection were being compensated. But now the report of the rate rationalisation committee shows that even the tax slab on sin goods is being reduced.' Raising concern over GST rate cuts, the finance minister said that in the rate rationalisation committee meeting, he demanded that the Centre clarify who will compensate for the revenue loss to states caused by reduction of GST rates.

Punjab Finance Minister Cheema criticises Centre's GST rate rationalisation, terms it ‘irresponsible'

Criticising the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalisation and terming it 'irresponsible', Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has asked the Central government to immediately release compensation of ₹50,000 crore to Punjab to cover losses after GST implementation. After participating in the two-day meeting of the GST ministerial group on health and insurance, rationalising rates, and compensation cess, Mr. Cheema said that since the implementation of GST in 2017, Punjab has suffered a total financial loss of ₹1,11,045 crore. Also read: Required reforms: On reforms to the GST system He said that despite receiving approximately ₹60,000 crore as compensation from the Centre, ₹50,000 crore is still pending. The Central government had announced a 5-year compensation package to states in lieu of financial losses incurred due to GST implementation, but this compensation has now been discontinued, he said. 'While the Punjab government is not opposed to the rationalisation of GST rates, the Union government must take responsibility for the resulting financial losses to the states. The BJP-led Central government is continuously undermining the financial structure of states, which is a significant attack on the federal structure of the country. The Central government is even evading the release of funds to Punjab. Apart from GST, ₹8,000 crore of rural development funds and over ₹1,000 crore under the Prime Minister's Road Scheme are also being withheld,' he said. Hitting out at the BJP-led Union government for repeatedly making changes to the GST system without reaching a definitive solution, Mr. Cheema said this uncertainty leads to constant harassment of taxpayers and a systematic breakdown of the country's financial framework. The gambling with the tax structure would cause massive harm to the nation, he said, dismissing the Centre's promises as mere rhetoric.
