Will hold dharna if West Bengal's college admissions do not begin soon, warns BJP
On Monday (August 18, 2025), Mr. Adhikari headed a delegation of 15 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators to meet Governor CV Ananda Bose and submitted a memorandum seeking his urgent intervention in the prolonged delay in the publishing of results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE).
WBJEE, an entrance exam for undergraduate engineering, technology, architecture, and pharmacy courses in West Bengal's State-run and State-aided universities, was conducted on April 27, but the results have been delayed, likely because the matter surrounding the State's Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation list is currently being heard by the Supreme Court.
'It has been three months [since examinations have been concluded], yet first-year admissions have not yet begun. JEE results have not been declared. This is a very serious issue. Nearly 5 lakh candidates and their guardians are very worried. They are suffering… If college admissions do not start by this week and the JEE results are not published, BJP MLAs will hold dharnas in front of Bikash Bhavan from next week,' Mr. Adhikari said after meeting the Governor.
In West Bengal, 8,200 educational institutions shut down last year, Mr. Adhikari said. He also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to privatise higher education in the State.
'The delay will lead to drop [in] student turnout as many may be forced to reluctantly seek opportunity outside Bengal. In addition to the worst hit future of lakhs of meritorious students, the reputation of the educational institution in West Bengal [gets] hit which will reduce the number of students as they will go outside in huge number,' the memorandum to the Governor dated August 18, 2025, reads.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government's Directorate of Medical Education, in an 'urgent notice' on August 18, announced that the counselling and admission process for medical and dental courses under National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025 'has been kept under abeyance till further order.'
'The future of the state's medical students has been pushed into darkness. Why was the admission counseling, once started, suddenly halted indefinitely? Is this yet another attempt to appease narrow political interests by granting undue privilege to a particular group under the guise of reservation?' Union Minister and BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar questioned on Monday, referring to the order.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration near Bikash Bhavan to protest against the delay in WBJEE results and the deferment of MBBS and BDS counselling. Several protestors were detained as the police disrupted SFI's protest march to Bikash Bhavan.

Opposition questions Ajit Pawar's commitment to secularism after wife Sunetra attends RSS meet
Reacting to the controversy, Ajit Pawar -- whose party is part of the ruling Mahayuti coalition with the BJP and Shiv Sena -- said he was unaware of the meeting. 'I am not the husband who takes each minute update from his wife,' he added. Sunetra quickly clarified on social media that her Delhi meeting was non-political. She said she attended to understand how other people and their NGOs work for women's empowerment. 'I just spoke two words there, and no political meaning should be gleaned from this meeting. My intention was only to understand the women's problem and get the solution,' she said. Meanwhile, Opposition parties questioned the NCP's commitment to secularism and the Shahu-Phule-Ambedkar progressive ideology following Sunetra's attendance at the RSS meeting. NCP(SP) MLA and leader Rohit Pawar suggested there may have been pressure on the Pawars to attend. 'On one hand, Ajit Pawar is taking the name of Shiv-Shahu-Phule-Ambedkar. On the other hand, he or his representative attending the RSS meeting shows hypocrisy,' he said. 'Ajit Pawar has joined hands with the BJP for his reasons. He has not accepted the BJP-RSS ideology, but his party must be under pressure to attend meetings or upload photos to send out a message that he is accepting RSS ideology,' he added. Rohit added that Sunetra should have raised questions during the meeting about why the RSS and the BJP opposed OBC reservation through their Kamandal Yatra against the Mandal Commission.

Karnataka refers crowd control bill to house committee amid Opposition concerns
The Karnataka government has moved to refer the Crowd Control (Managing Crowd at Events and Place of Gathering) Bill, 2025 to a house committee after facing strong opposition from rival parties over concerns it could restrict protests and affect cultural and religious Bill, tabled in the Assembly by Home Minister G Parameshwara, was introduced in the wake of the June 4 stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives. Parameshwara described the tragedy as a 'wake-up call' and said the legislation aims to ensure crowd safety and hold event organisers accountable. advertisementThe Bill requires organisers of events expecting 7,000 or more people to obtain police permission in advance, with those expecting over 50,000 attendees additionally required to provide an indemnity bond of Rs 1 crore. Applications for permission must initially be submitted ten days before the event, though Parameshwara later agreed to reduce this period to five days following opposition concerns. The legislation specifies that unpermitted events could attract penalties including imprisonment of up to seven years and fines of Rs 1 crore. Events resulting in injury or fatalities would carry up to seven years' imprisonment for injuries and up to life for or breaches of peace during events could result in three years' imprisonment and fines of Rs 50,000. The Bill exempts family functions and private events, including those in leased or hired venues, while religious events, mass marriages, and government functions are to be BJP legislator Suresh Kumar criticised the Bill as an 'afterthought' following the High Court's questions on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for crowd management, describing it as a 'postmortem Bill.'Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka expressed concerns that the Bill could become a tool for police misuse, asking, 'All political parties hold programmes or events. If something goes wrong, then what'll be the fate of that party? This must be thought about. This should not become a weapon for police. Think and frame rules.'Other legislators, including Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and BJP MLA Sunil Kumar, echoed these concerns, warning that powers granted under the Bill could be misused to target protests or certain communities, and questioned its applicability to spontaneous protests, religious festivals, or government events. Yatnal alleged the Bill seemed intended 'to target events of one religion and curtail protests' and warned it was 'more dangerous than what was done by the British.'Responding to the opposition, Parameshwara agreed to amend certain clauses, reducing the advance notice period to five days and exempting religious events, mass marriages, and government functions. Despite these assurances, opposition members maintained that the Bill required careful scrutiny before enactment and called for its referral to a house committee. The Speaker, UT Khader, subsequently confirmed that the Assembly's House Committee would review the legislation for detailed consideration.- EndsIN THIS STORY#Karnataka
