Met Gala: Damson Idris' bold arrival at iconic fashion event is nod at his Tommy Hilfiger role
Damson Idris attended the 2025 Met Gala in New York City, and was pictured arriving in a APXGP racing car, which is a reference to his upcoming film F1, which also stars Brad Pitt
British actor Damson Idris made a bold arrival at the Met Gala.
The 33-year-old star, who has been in Black Mirror, Doctors, Casualty and other dramas, rocked up wearing racing suit, accessorised with a red, white and blue helmet featuring 20,000 Swarovski crystals. He also arrived in a APXGP racing car, while most of the other attendees in New York City were seen pulling up in black SUVs.
It is because Damson, who was born in Peckham, southeast London, is set to star in blockbuster F1 later this year. He has already filmed scenes for the Warner Bros Pictures movie, which will also star Brad Pitt, and will tell the tale of Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who has to retire following a crash.
Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with the film ahead of its release. Damson, who last year won a NAACP Image Award for his role in crime drama Snowfall, became the clothing brand's menswear ambassador in April 2023.

A Hilfiger spokesperson said: "We're excited to partner with the highly anticipated film, F1. Damson Idris stars as Joshua Pierce, a driver for the fictional APXGP team, and we wanted his Met Gala entrance to reflect the same cinematic energy."
Both the racing driver getup and Damson's second costume - a rouge tuxedo - were emblazoned with the Hilfiger logo. The trousers included a side satin stripe and slight flare, a nod to "modern dandyism" and the theme of this year's Costume Institute exhibition, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." The young actor accessorised the look with a bespoke brooch and jewellery from his personal brand Didris.
"The Met is all about making a statement, and the reveal was everything: stepping out of the suit to unveil a sharp, tailored tuxedo in Tommy tartan — seamlessly shifting from high-octane to high fashion. From start line to spotlight, it captured the essence of both worlds," the Hilfiger statement added.
Joseph Kosinski, of Top Gun: Maverick fame, directs F1, which sees Brad portray the lead character. Damson has a large supporting role, as does Irish actress Kerry Condon, best known for starring in 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin.
Held on the first Monday of May each year, the Met Gala - the annual haute couture fundraising festival - is Christmas for fashion fans. Guests' attempts at following the theme (or failing miserably) are scrutinised by sartorial critics worldwide, with men who turn up in boring black tuxedos often taking a bashing online.
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour along with actor Colman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, musician-turned-fashion-mogul Pharrell Williams and honorary chair LeBron James co-chaired the event this year.

Iconic Brit TV show RETURNING after 22 years with Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby or Davina McCall lined up to host

There had been rumours the programme — famously hosted on ITV by the late Cilla Black — was to be revived on the BBC. Producers want to keep the tradition of a top British female host, with a shortlist including Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall. The famous sliding wall separating the contestants will also return. But it is not known whether it will feature a replacement for Graham Skidmore - aka 'our Graham' — who provided Cilla with a summary of contestants. He died in 2021 aged 90. He has plenty of famous namesakes, including chat show host Graham Norton, ex-footballer Graeme Souness and actor Stephen Graham. An insider said: 'Although there's likely to be some modern twists, the bosses very much want to keep the essence of the original. 'There'll be key elements returning, including the famous sliding wall. 'Plus there will be a prize up for grabs of a wedding package, which echoes Cilla's famous gag whenever couples had enjoyed a successful date, and she used to ask, 'Do I need to buy an 'at for the wedding?'' The Sun last year revealed plans for a revival after another Saturday night ITV hit, Gladiators, had successfully moved to the BBC. It is believed the deep pockets of Disney+ ensured it won out over the Beeb. Paul O'Grady pays tribute to original blind date host Cilla Black It is expected to film later this year — 40 years after Blind Date first aired — and drop in 2026. The original ran from 1985 to 2003, pulling in up to 18 million viewers. After Cilla's death in 2015, aged 72, it was briefly revived two years later on Channel 5 with Paul O'Grady. Camilla reveals wish to become joint patron of ‘favourite' Garden Museum
Camilla visited an exhibition held by the Garden Museum in south London on Wednesday to celebrate British Flowers Week. She told attendees she had spoken to the King, who is already a patron, about joining him after previously joking during a visit last year about 'nudging' Charles from his position. Speaking during the visit on Wednesday, she said: 'I have said to my husband and talked to the office as I would very much like to become joint patron. This is one of my favourite places and it never ceases to surprise me', which prompted cheers and applause from the crowd. Gardener and TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh, the president of the Garden Museum, said he would be following up Camilla's decision to become joint patron 'with a letter with a strong invitation'. Of her wish to become joint patron, he added: 'I wouldn't want to tread on His Majesty's toes but I think he would be delighted that Her Majesty is every bit as keen as he is.' Dressed in a polka dot dress and cream and black-toed shoes, Camilla was greeted by Titchmarsh and Christopher Woodward and Rupert Tyler, the Garden Museum's director and chairman of trustees. She told them the museum 'just gets better and better. I think it is hard to get it better but it always manages'. The Queen viewed six installations featuring British cut flowers and met the artists behind them, discussing the importance of diversifying as well as plant upkeep techniques. Camilla was accompanied at times by Sarah Hardy, the deputy director, and florist Shane Connolly, who designed the floral arrangements for the coronation in 2023. She also viewed Cecil Beaton's Garden Party, a display which included portraits of Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth), the Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret. Camilla then met schoolchildren from Evelyn Grace Academy and Platanos College in south-west London to learn about the biology of the tea plant at the museum. She told the children her favourite tea was mint but that she also liked lemon barley, adding they were 'nice to have after an evening meal' as they helped to digest it. She tried her hand at making mint teabags with the museum's plant science educator, Samia Qureshi. Camilla sniffed and placed the herbs in the drawstring bags and said: 'I shall sample that tonight.' Reaching the museum's cafe, she received a bouquet of flowers from head chef Myles Donaldson's daughter, Darcie, four, before telling cafe staff: 'I wish I was staying'.
