US imports fall more than expected in June on tariff concerns, trade body data shows

Aug 8 (Reuters) - Imports into the United States fell more than expected in June as concerns around shifting tariff policies hit retailers, raising fears of fewer product options in stores for shoppers, data from the National Retail Federation showed on Friday. The data comes as several of U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs went into effect this week. As of August 7, duties range from 10% to 50%, with India, Brazil, and Switzerland facing some of the highest rates. Since April's "Liberation Day" announcement of a 10% baseline tariff, Trump has adjusted rates frequently. A temporary truce with China in May reduced tariffs to 30%, but new hikes resumed in July. U.S. ports covered by NRF's report handled 1.96 million 20-foot containers or its equivalent in June, which was down 8.4% year-over-year, but up 0.7% from May. That was a bigger drop from the NRF forecast from a month ago, opens new tab. The trade body had then projected ports would handle 2.06 million TEU in June, up 5.9% from May but down 3.7% year over year. Moreover, import cargo volume at major container ports in the U.S. is tentatively expected to end 2025 5.6% below 2024's volume, NRF's forecast showed, opens new tab on Friday. Apparel retailers, including Under Armour (UAA.N), opens new tab, Deckers Outdoor (DECK.N), opens new tab have reported tariff impacts in the past couple of months and are taking steps to diversify their supply chain to avoid tariffs on goods routed through or sourced from Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam. "The uncertainty around tariffs has impacted retailers' ability to forecast holiday orders and shipments. As tariff rates increase, consumers will ultimately face higher prices and less choice and availability during the holiday season," NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. "We need binding trade agreements that open markets by lowering tariffs, not raising them." Tariffs will result in higher prices for U.S. consumers, less hiring, lower business investment and a slower economy, he added.

Sun Life shares plunge as Medicaid uncertainty prompts US dental forecast revision

TORONTO, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Sun Life Financial's ( opens new tab shares plunged as much as 8.5% on Friday, a day after the Canadian insurer said it would miss a 2025 profit target for its dental business in the U.S. due to uncertainty over Medicaid funding. Sun Life, which bulked up its dental business through the $2.5 billion acquisition of DentaQuest in 2022, said underlying net income for the dental business, which has struggled in past quarters, is expected to be below $100 million in 2025. The forecast revision was driven by uncertain Medicaid funding resulting in slower negotiations with states on coverage rates and higher Medicaid claims, the company said. Sun Life works with U.S. states to administer Medicaid and Medicare Advantage dental benefits through the DentaQuest business and is dependent on government funding. "The claims are also increasing at a faster pace, which I partially think is because people are seeing that they may lose their Medicaid benefits. So they're going to the dentist more quickly," CEO Kevin Strain said in an interview on Friday. Strain noted that the states have been reluctant to pass on the increased claims costs, something he expects to sort itself out over the next few years. "If we're struggling, you can imagine that the smaller players are really struggling with it ... We'll work our way through it," he said. The U.S. remained one of the company's fastest growing and least capital-intensive regions, Strain added. Sun Life expects over 12% underlying net income growth for Sun Life U.S. in the long term, with the dental business expected to contribute at least a third of overall earnings in the region. The stock has lost about 8% of its value, including Thursday's losses, while peer Manulife ( opens new tab which also reported weakness in its U.S. business, is down 6.5%. "We believe that a reversal in the (Sun Life's) U.S. dental business that caused the company to retract its 2025 profit target for this business has implications beyond the quarter," National Bank analyst Gabriel Dechaine said. Analysts have said Sun Life's dental business could be vulnerable to provisions in U.S. President Donald Trump's recent tax-cut and spending legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which aims to cut Medicaid spending. That could weigh on the future growth of the business as tighter eligibility requirements could shrink Medicaid enrollment over time. Underlying net income fell 4% in the U.S., which accounts for about a fifth of the company's underlying earnings. Its underlying earnings of C$1.79 in the second quarter were above analysts' average estimate of C$1.78 per share, according to LSEG data.

UK's Assura snubs KKR takevoer bid in support of competing PHP offer

LONDON, Aug 8 (Reuters) - British healthcare real estate investor Assura (AGRP.L), opens new tab said on Friday that it maintains its support for a takeover bid by Primary Health Properties(PHP.L), opens new tab despite rival suitor KKR urging it to back its competing offer. Assura said it was urging its shareholders to vote in favour of PHP's $2.4 billion acquisition offer over the KKR-led bid with Stonepeak Partners. KKR had said earlier in the day that it met with Assura's board in recent days to lobby in favour of its own cash takeover offer. The U.S.-based private equity firm and PHP were locked in a months-long battle for Assura before its board backed PHP's higher bid in June. KKR said a number of factors had since changed, including a decline in the share price of both companies, which has in turn raised the premium of its own cash offer. PHP in a separate statement welcomed Assura's reaffirmation of support for its bid. Britain's competition regulator also said on Friday it was looking into a possible probe into the PHP and Assura deal if it goes through.
