Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' crosses USD 550K in USA advance bookings for premiere shows, set to challenge records of 'Jaile'r and 'Leo'
Superstar
Rajinikanth
and
Lokesh Kanagaraj
's Coolie is already setting the stage for a historic box office debut in the United States of America. With 16 days still to go before its August 14 premiere, the film has stormed past the $550,000 mark in advance sales in the USA alone, signaling immense anticipation and the possibility of shattering previous Tamil film premiere records.
As per the latest data, Coolie has raked in $557,700 ( Rs 4.84 crore) from over 20,500 tickets sold across more than 800 shows in 365 locations, while Canada bookings are yet to open which will take the tally into a different league.
This strong start places Coolie firmly on track to challenge, and possibly surpass, the premiere records set by Rajinikanth's own Jailer (USD $948,000) and
Thalapathy Vijay
and Lokesh's Leo (USD $1.5 million).
Both films created massive waves in their respective openings, but Coolie backed by an even bigger scale and broader ensemble is shaping up to be an even bigger theatrical event.
Both Leo and Jailer were able to earn USD 5.69 million and USD 5.77 million respectively by the end of the theatrical run in North America. It would be interesting to see how the combination of Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagraj fares in comparison.
The film brings together a pan-Indian cast, including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and
Soubin Shahir
. The buzz has been further amplified by cameo appearances from Aamir Khan and Pooja Hegde, whose involvement has widened the film's appeal beyond the South Indian demographic.
Adding to the drama is the high-stakes box office clash between Coolie and Aditya Chopra's War 2, another major Independence Day weekend release. War 2 boasts an A-list lineup featuring
Hrithik Roshan
, Jr.
NTR, and Kiara Advani, and is directed by Ayan Mukerji of Brahmāstra fame. The film is a part of YRF's spy universe, making it a major draw for mainstream Hindi film audiences. The advance booking for War 2 is expected to open in the next few days.
With 16 days remaining and momentum building rapidly, Coolie has already crossed a critical milestone. If this trend continues—especially once Canada opens and last-minute bookings roll in—Rajinikanth's latest venture might not only outshine his own Jailer, but also rewrite the North American premiere playbook for Tamil cinema.

Watch: Andrew Garfield Turns into Sam Altman As He Films For Artificial Outside Tech CEO's Real Life Home
Andrew Garfield has once again stepped into the tech world on-screen. This time, the actor is playing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Artificial, a new comedic drama directed by Luca Guadagnino. Real-time clips from the movie set in San Francisco are going viral, showing Garfield in full 'tech-bro' mode as he films outside Altman's actual home. Fans quickly picked up on his slow, calculated walk, hands tucked into his pockets, what many called the perfect Sam Altman impression. One Reddit user shared behind-the-scenes footage and captioned it, 'Andrew Garfield nailed the Sam Altman walk!' Another said, 'Got some shots of the OpenAI movie on Lombard,' confirming the shoot location. Filming took place outside Sam Altman's real house One of the biggest talking points? The fact that the movie scene was filmed right in front of Altman's real-life residence. 'What's more interesting is they're filming in front of his house…lol,' wrote one user. Someone else added, 'I asked some crew if he knew about it and they basically said 'he does now' lol.' TMZ and several X (formerly Twitter) users also posted the moment, which shows Andrew Garfield on the phone, dressed in grey slacks and a blazer, standing in front of the recognizable San Francisco property. Here's why fans are calling it a 'Social Network pipeline' Garfield's role in Artificial instantly reminded fans of his performance as Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. One X user joked, 'The concept of Andrew Garfield playing you in a movie about your life so you know you and your company are about to be disgustingly successful. Social Network pipeline studied in film classes.' Fans pointed out the similarities between the two films, both center on real-life tech figures, boardroom drama, and rapid shifts in power. Garfield's dramatic line, 'I'm coming back for everything,' from The Social Network, is now making the rounds again online. What is 'Artificial' about? Artificial is a comedic drama based on real events at OpenAI. It focuses on the 2023 chaos when Sam Altman was briefly fired and then reinstated. Monica Barbaro stars as Mira Murati, and Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk. Yura Borisov is cast as Ilya Sutskever. The movie is being shot across San Francisco, including locations like Dolores Park, the Marina District, and a well-known Bay Area restaurant. Backed by Amazon MGM Studios, the film has a reported USD 40 million budget and is expected to release in 2026.

Rajinikanth's Coolie Gets 'A' Certificate from CBFC, 1st 'Adults Only' Tag for Lokesh Kanagaraj
Last Updated: Coolie, starring Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, received an 'A' certificate from the CBFC ahead of its August 14, 2025 release, Kanagaraj's first adult-rated film. Ahead of its theatrical debut on August 14, 2025, Coolie, starring superstar Rajinikanth, has received an 'A' (Adults Only) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This marks director Lokesh Kanagaraj's first film to earn an adult rating, a departure from his earlier titles such as Vikram and Leo, both of which were granted U/A certificates. Sun Pictures, the production house behind the film, announced the certification update via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The adult rating implies that the content is strictly restricted to viewers aged 18 and above, typically due to intense violence, suggestive themes, or coarse language. Take a look: While an 'A' certificate is rare for a Rajinikanth film, it isn't without precedent. The veteran actor's earlier films like Pudukkavidhai (1982), Ranga (1982), and Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985) also carried adult-only ratings. However, the latest certification hits different, particularly because of Lokesh's reputation for gritty, unfiltered storytelling. Fans on social media expressed their curiosity and excitement. One user remarked, 'I don't remember a Rajini movie with A certificate ever since I was born. At least, one can be happy that it will be a true-to-the-genre movie without any compromises." Another added, 'This has set the deal for me, can't wait to see what Lokesh and team have served this time!" The team behind Rajinikanth's highly anticipated film Coolie has officially revealed the trailer release timing. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, the makers confirmed that the action drama's trailer will drop today, August 2, 2025. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sun Pictures (@sunpictures) Produced by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures, Coolie features a star-studded ensemble including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, and Monisha Blessy. The film is set to release during the Independence Day weekend and will go head-to-head with War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, directed by Ayan Mukerji.
