Rey Mysterio Teases The Return Of Former WWE Champion
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has added a new layer of intrigue to the future of the controversial Alberto El Patron, formerly known as Alberto Del Rio in WWE. At the AAA Triplemania XXXIII event this past weekend, Mysterio made a direct promise to the fans regarding the absent star. The comments have once again ignited speculation about a potential return to the WWE ecosystem for the former multi-time world champion. "I'll Bring Him, Wait On Me" During an appearance at the premium live event, the live crowd began to loudly chant "Alberto" for the former AAA Mega Champion. In response, Rey Mysterio took a microphone and made a simple but impactful promise to the fans. "I'll bring him, wait on me," Mysterio stated. Rey Mysterio Promises to Bring Back Alberto Del Rio During AAA TripleMania XXXIII 'I'll bring him, wait on me.' — Steve Carrier (@stevecarrier_) August 17, 2025 It is unclear if Mysterio was referring to bringing him back to AAA, where he recently lost a storyline "loser leaves town" match, or to WWE itself. Given WWE's recent acquisition of AAA, the line between the two has become increasingly blurred. Michael Tran/AFP via Getty Images More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match Alberto Del Rio's WWE career was a story of massive and immediate success. In his first run from 2010 to 2014, he won the Royal Rumble, the Money in the Bank ladder match, and was a four-time world champion. He was one of the top heels in the entire company. The Power of Rey Mysterio Previous reports have indicated that while some WWE talent were pushing for Del Rio's return, the company itself had no interest in bringing him back to the main roster due to his controversial past. However, a public endorsement from a universally respected legend and locker room leader like Rey Mysterio carries a great deal of weight. Mysterio's promise to the fans could be the first step in opening a door for his former rival. With the new WWE-AAA partnership, a role for Del Rio within the AAA brand could be a logical way to bring him back into the fold without placing him on Raw or SmackDown. The wrestling world will now be watching to see if Rey Mysterio can make good on his promise. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

WWE Is Reportedly Bringing Back Fan-Favorite Event
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A name has reportedly been chosen for WWE's new September premium live event, and it is a throwback to the extreme era of the 1990s. According to a new report, WWE will be reviving the classic ECW pay-per-view name, "Wrestlepalooza." The new main roster PLE is scheduled to go head-to-head with one of AEW's biggest shows of the year, marking a significant escalation in the competition between the two promotions. A Head-To-Head Showdown It was previously reported by POST Wrestling that WWE was planning a new, unnamed main roster PLE for Saturday, September 20th, in Indianapolis. This is the same night that All Elite Wrestling will present its All Out pay-per-view from Toronto. A new report from the social media account WrestleVotes has now revealed the name for the WWE event. "September 20th, it's a "Wrestlepalooza"," the account posted. September 20th, it's a 'Wrestlepalooza'… — WrestleVotes (@WrestleVotes) August 18, 2025 A Nod To The Extreme The "Wrestlepalooza" name is a deep cut for long-time wrestling fans. It was the name of a recurring supercard for the original Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) promotion in the late 1990s. The name was a play on the popular Lollapalooza music festival and perfectly captured the grungy, alternative, and chaotic culture of the ECW brand. NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 23: Crowds cheer at the WWE SummerSlam 2015 at Barclays Center of Brooklyn on August 23, 2015 in New York City. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match This would not be the first time WWE has revived a classic ECW event name. The company has found success using the "Heatwave" name for a popular annual NXT special. WWE's History with the ECW Brand WWE purchased the assets of ECW in the early 2000s, giving them the rights to the promotion's tape library and all of its intellectual property. The company has had a mixed history with the brand, finding massive success with two "One Night Stand" reunion pay-per-views in 2005 and 2006. However, their attempt to revive ECW as a full-time, weekly television brand from 2006 to 2010 was met with a more negative reception from hardcore fans. The choice to use an edgy, beloved ECW name for this new, competitive main roster event is a deliberate and symbolic one. It is a clear statement of intent from WWE as they prepare to go head-to-head with AEW in a way they have not done since the "Wednesday Night War" ended in 2021. WWE touts record-shattering performance of AAA Triplemania 33
On Saturday night (Aug. 16) in Mexico City, AAA ran their version of WrestleMania for the first time since WWE's purchase of the lucha libre promotion. Triplemania XXXIII streamed free on YouTube (and on three different channels: WWE's, WWE Espanol's, and AAA's), and featured several WWE talents on the card — with more making surprise appearances during the event. As they are wont to do even when they're not in 'wrestling war' mode, WWE sent out a press release the Monday after the show making much of Triplemania's impressive performance on several key business metrics. There's a word for that… it somehow escapes me right now. Extol? Acclaim? Gosh, I was way off. Daniel Bryan Danielson must be ashamed of me. Here's the presser, presented by Tout: Triplemania XXXIII shatters records for viewership, gate, merchandise and social engagement August 18, 2025 – TripleManía XXXIII, Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA's largest annual event, became the most-viewed and highest-grossing TripleManía in event history. Streamed globally on WWE and AAA's YouTube channels in Spanish and English, the broadcast has been watched by more than 4.3 million viewers in the first 24 hours and hit a peak live concurrent audience of 614,000. With a crowd of 19,691 at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City this past Saturday, TripleManía marked the highest attendance for any Mexican lucha libre show this year and set AAA's all-time gate record. Additionally, the event broke records for the highest-ever merchandise sales in AAA history. On X, #Triplemania was the No.1 trending topic in the United States and Mexico on Saturday, and a record 208 million views were generated across official AAA and WWE social platforms. The record-breaking event was highlighted by El Hijo del Vikingo defeating Dragon Lee, Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano to retain the AAA Mega Championship, Pagano & Psycho Clown defeating Angel & Berto to win the AAA Tag Team Championship, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. defeating El Mesias to win the Latin American Championship, and more. WWE has acquired leading Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA in partnership with Mexico-based sports and entertainment holding company, Fillip. Now go forth and Tout about it, if you so choose.
