Browns Myles Garrett will ‘make' teammates ‘get it,' talks Nick Chubb, Aaron Rodgers

Yahoo2 days ago

While a few teams, including two in the AFC North, deal with contract issues, the Cleveland Browns avoided the biggest one of the offseason with DE Myles Garrett. When Garrett requested a trade, most believed it would be the end of their relationship and the Browns roster would lose, by far, its best player. Instead, an extension was agreed upon and Garrett was at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
During his conversation with the media, the former Defensive Player of the Year noted that, while he may have missed some OTAs, he is around more than the media is aware. 'Feels good. I mean, I've been back here a couple of times. Don't really make my presence aware until you all are here,' Garrett said.
When discussing his role as a leader, the hulking defender made it clear that he plans on holding his teammates accountable. 'Seeing how guys attack the practice field, how they come in and prepare from day to day. And if they don't get it, you make them get it. Like I said, being that leader, setting that standard and showing guys how it's done instead of expecting them to know it,' said Garrett Tuesday afternoon.
'You have to guide them.'
Speaking just days after RB Nick Chubb departed the team for the Houston Texans, Garrett noted that he tried to get the veteran back to return when talking with GM Andrew Berry. Garrett noted why he wanted Chubb back, 'because I know he means a lot to the fans, but he means a lot to us as well on the team. So, you know, it's an emotional blow to not have him here, but we got to keep on moving, keep on trucking.'
Garrett also noted he had a clear idea that Joe Flacco would be returning to the team when he talked earlier this offseason about Cleveland needing a quarterback they can have 'faith in'.
Finally, in what has already been taken out of context by the Pittsburgh Steelers and national media, Garrett talked about putting new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers in his graveyard. Garrett famously had his house decorated for Halloween with a QB graveyard with headstones of all of those he has sacked:
For now, the Browns have two more days of mandatory minicamp before a last OTA session. Then training camp begins and Garrett will have a real shot at leading as he described before taking on Rodgers in Pittsburgh in Week 6.

Packers Predicted To Make Major Trade With Browns For $13M Defensive Back

Packers Predicted To Make Major Trade With Browns For $13M Defensive Back originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the primary responsibilities of an NFL General Manager is to ensure that the team's roster is in optimal condition heading into the season. For Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst, this meant prioritizing enhanced protection for quarterback Jordan Love by signing former San Francisco 49ers guard Aaron Banks, drafting Anthony Brown in the second round of the 2025 draft, and injecting fresh talent into the receiving corps with Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, and Mecole Hardman. Advertisement Gutekunst also improved the pass rush by drafting Barryn Sorrell, Collin Oliver, and Warren Brinson. Moreover, he signed former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs in free agency. Still, the cornerback position is one of the weakest links on the team. Nevertheless, during mandatory minicamp, Gutekunst expressed strong confidence that his starting cornerbacks will step up and make a significant impact this season. Still, Gutekunst is likely to stay alert to league-wide transactions. If the right opportunities come along, he could make one or two moves to add players who can help Green Bay win games. Given that the Packers have a weak spot at cornerback and the Browns may want to improve their receiving corps, both teams could potentially strike a deal in the future, as suggested by The Athletic's Zac Jackson. Newsome was a first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2021. He appeared in 12 games each season and started at least 11 games annually from 2021 through 2023. However, last season he started only 3 of 13 games and earned an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 52.2, ranking him 177th out of 223 qualifying cornerbacks. Advertisement The Browns picked up Newsome's fifth-year option last year, locking him in for a $13.37 million salary in 2025. If the Packers were to trade for him, they would likely need to negotiate a long-term contract extension. Throughout his career, Newsome has alternated between playing outside cornerback and slot, offering the kind of flexibility Green Bay typically values in its defensive backs. Newsome is coming off a down year in 2024, so it is tough to imagine Green Bay giving up draft capital and a receiver, then turning around and negotiating a new deal for a player who took a step back. Still, Jeff Hafley has a strong track record of developing defensive backs — and if anyone can help Newsome get back to form, it is the Packers' defensive coordinator. Shemar Stewart leaves minicamp amid contract dispute with Bengals

Shemar Stewart leaves minicamp amid contract dispute with Bengals Show Caption Hide Caption Greg Olsen expresses excitement for upcoming Olympic flag football Former TE Greg Olsen is excited for some NFL players to showcase their skills in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics and the debut of flag football. Sports Seriously Ladies and gentlemen, Shemar Stewart has left the building. The Cincinnati Bengals' first-round pick left mandatory minicamp Thursday as his contract dispute with the Bengals continues, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. According to Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network, the Bengals are attempting to change the language in new rookie contracts to "allow the team to void future guarantees." Conway reported that Stewart's camp is asking for his contract language to look the same as it did for defensive end Myles Murphy and right tackle Amarius Mims, the team's previous two first-round picks. SHEMAR STEWART CONTRACT DISPUTE: Why Bengals' first-round pick is holding out It has been a month and a half since Cincinnati drafted Stewart, an edge rusher out of Texas A&M, with the 17th overall pick. Stewart has yet to participate in any practices – through rookie minicamp, OTAs and now mandatory minicamp – as the two sides have stalled in contract negotiations. Despite not practicing, the former Aggie had been in attendance at the team's offseason training programs prior to Thursday's departure from minicamp. Stewart is not the only disgruntled edge rusher holding out from Bengals offseason workouts. NFL MINICAMP STORYLINES: Rookies, QB competitions, what to watch for Trey Hendrickson, the defensive end who led the NFL last year with 17.5 sacks and finished as the Defensive Player of the Year runner-up, has also been sitting out of Cincinnati's minicamp. Hendrickson is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that he and the Bengals have made "no progress" on a multiyear contract, and the defensive end has not reported for any of minicamp.

4 Browns players on their last chance to leave a positive impression on the team

4 Browns players on their last chance to leave a positive impression on the team 2025 appears set up to be a cornerstone season for the Cleveland Browns. A Super Bowl may not be in the cards, but as the team recovers from the Deshaun Watson fallout, they smartly maneuvered to reset the roster and cap space. The benefit of this is that it will be a low-expectation season, giving young players a chance to develop and prove themselves. For some, that'll be a chance to earn a long-term deal as part of the Browns' future. But, for others, it could be their final chance to prove they can be a starter in the league. Here are the players to keep an eye on as they enter a massive prove-it season. LT Dawand Jones Jones is a hulking offensive lineman entering his third season on the Browns after being a fourth-round pick in 2023. Despite his draft status, he's found himself playing more often than not, starting nine games as a rookie at right tackle for an injured Jack Conklin, and another eight games in 2024 at left tackle. The problem has been that we haven't gotten that extended look at him with both seasons ending in injury. The Browns did not address the offensive line in the draft, making Jones the lone starter on the offensive line on a rookie deal and under the age of 30 (by the start of the season). His short stints as a starter and his draft status do not give him a particularly long leash going forward, but the lack of other options guarantees him this season to prove himself. To start, he must stay healthy. Shedding over 20 pounds is a great start and also shows his commitment. From there, he'll need to improve his game and become a more reliable blind-side option. A breakout campaign from Jones would be massive for the Browns, for once, they would address the quarterback. If he can't do that, he may be best suited as a backup swing tackle on another team. OG Teven Jenkins While it didn't make headlines, the Jenkins signing was one of the more confounding of the off-season. A former second-round selection to Chicago, Jenkins slid in the draft process due to injury concerns that would follow him into the NFL. While consistently battling bruises and ailments, Jenkins managed to start 45 games in four years with the Bears and improved every season. He wasn't expected to sign for a big deal, but somehow the Browns snagged him late in free agency on a cheap one-year deal. Jenkins has some versatility to his game as a tackle or a guard, but currently, he's slated to be a backup somewhere along the line. It's a move that still doesn't make much sense. Jenkins is better than a cheap backup, and plenty of other teams needed offensive line help. It makes sense that his injuries would weaken his market, but not to this degree. Suddenly, that makes this a very important year for Jenkins. Not only will he need to earn a starting role, but he may need to compete just to stay on the roster against young linemen Zak Zinter and Luke Wypler. If he can do that, then perhaps he can parlay some quality games into a better deal after the season. RB Jerome Ford The Browns made it clear that they wanted a boost at running back after selecting Quinshon Judkins in the second round, and then Dylan Sampson in the fourth. Both were highly touted prospects that should form a fun thunder-and-lightning duo, but that leaves little room for Ford. He won't go down without a fight, however, even taking a pay cut to stay with the team. Ford enters his fourth season on the roster bubble, even after a solid 2023 season that saw him thrust into a starting role. He didn't overwhelm anyone, but he was solid for a young fifth-round draft pick. He was far more efficient than Nick Chubb last season as he returned from injury, but the team still opted to start him instead. This now becomes Ford's final chance to make an impact by holding off one or both rookies for playing time. He has the advantage of experience in the league and with the scheme, and even familiarity with Joe Flacco should he win the starting quarterback job. But the team doesn't value Ford highly by their actions over the past two seasons. That'll make 2025 an uphill battle for Ford as he tries to extend his career. CB Greg Newsome II Until the selection of Mason Graham this past draft, Greg Newsome had been the last first-round pick on the Browns for three straight seasons. Unfortunately, he hasn't lived up to that billing, showing strong flashes but never being able to close that gap of consistency. The team did pick up his fifth-year option last off-season, giving Newsome one more year to play his way into a bigger contract, whether that be for the Browns or someone else. Newsome did not get off to a strong start as he was replaced in favor of Martin Emerson last season and then went down with a hamstring injury that cut his year short. However, the team did not draft a cornerback nor add anyone of substantial threat to a starting role in free agency. That means Newsome will get significant playing time once again, and with it, one last chance to prove himself. He doesn't need to break out in a big way to maintain his position, as Denzel Ward holds down the #1 cornerback spot. But he does need to become a more reliable player and find some consistency. This will be his third year with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, and should the defensive line put more pressure on opposing quarterbacks this year, then perhaps Newsome will find a little more success himself.
