USMNT Manager Pochettino Takes on Legends, Influencers in ‘Match for Hope'

New York Times14-02-2025
Maybe the doldrums of January camp got to Mauricio Pochettino. Or maybe he's out to lend a hand to a helpful cause. Just a few weeks removed from coaching a group of relative unknowns, the U.S. men's national team's head coach traded that collection of players for some all-time luminaries: Andres Iniesta, David Silva and his captains … social media influencers Chunkz and iShowSpeed.

Coaching against the likes of Thierry Henry, Andrea Pirlo and Alessandro Del Piero, Pochettino led a team of legends and influencers in the 'Match for Hope,' a charity match that took place in at the 974 Stadium in Doha, Qatar on Friday. Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger led Pochettino's opponents, who were led by influencers KSI and AboFlah.
The match played out about how you'd expect: some moments of truly dreadful soccer by the influencers dotted with touches of brilliance and humor from the legends. Henry in particular looked to be enjoying himself, at one point juggling the ball in the penalty area and deliberately directing it into the arm of Tobi Brown — aka TBJZL, co-founder of the 'Sidemen' — for a penalty kick.
Pochettino's side found itself down three goals at halftime, clawed its way back into things to pull even at 5-5 but ultimately lost the exhibition, 6-5. The tactics Speed tried to impose on Pochettino prior to the match evidently didn't quite come off as hoped.

Last year's inaugural Match for Hope raised $8.8 million for Qatar's 'Education Above All' foundation, which is said to have initiatives in Lebanon, Nigeria, Palestine, Syria and Pakistan.
GO DEEPER
USMNT has a striker injury problem before the Nations League Finals
With his duties coaching YouTube's best and brightest in the rear view, Pochettino is free to return to the States to work on something a tad more important: helping the USMNT lift a first trophy under his direction.
The U.S. faces Panama in a Concacaf Nations League semifinal on March 20 at SoFi Stadium outside Los Angeles. Should the Americans advance, they'll face either Mexico or Canada three days later in the final. They're looking to remain the region's only Nations League winner after capturing the first three editions of the competition.

Battle For Eberechi Eze Has Big Implications For Arsenal And Spurs

Eberechi Eze is a man in-demand. The 27-year-old is wanted by both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur with the two North London rivals hoping to complete a deal for the England international before the end of the summer transfer window. Eze could cost as much as $80m, reflecting his match-winning quality. Last season was an excellent one for Eze who registered eight goals and eight assists in 34 Premier League appearances. He was also a key figure as Crystal Palace won the FA Cup, sensationally beating Manchester City in the final to lift the first piece of silverware in the club's 119-year history. Eze is a legend at Selhurst Park. Such a talent, however, deserves a higher platform and Eze seems destined to be granted this before the summer transfer window closes. However, it's yet to be decided whether he will be wearing an Arsenal or Spurs jersey. There's reason to believe the 27-year-old would be a good fit for both North London outfits. Arsenal has been forced into the market for a new attacker following news of Kai Havertz's knee injury. Eze is capable of playing as a number 10 or on the left wing, but his signing would free up Gabriel Martinelli to operate through the middle. He would also give the Gunners a different dimension with his dribbling ability. Spurs could also be a good fit for Eze. Thomas Frank is remoulding the Europa League winners in his own image with Tottenham already apparently stronger having pushed Paris Saint-Germain all the way in the Super Cup and beaten Burnley in the opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. Frank likes his teams to attack open space at speed and this is where Eze could offer a lot. Tottenham also needs to find goals from other sources and Eze would bring plenty in this regard with his willingness to get forward and shoot from in and around the penalty area. His positivity would improve Spurs as an attacking proposition. Eze might be more of a key figure at Tottenham than Arsenal. However, at Arsenal the 27-year-old would be part of a team that is targeting the Premier League title. Spurs, on the other hand, is merely aiming to finish in the top five and put itself in a position to build on last season's triumph in the Europa League. At 27, Eze is at a critical juncture in his career. His route to the top of the English soccer has seen him progress through the lower leagues to the point he is now a proven difference-maker at Premier League level. Arsenal and Tottenham would both be lucky to have him, but only one can.

Agent arrives in London to meet with Arsenal and Liverpool to discuss Rodrygo Goes move

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso protested that 'nothing is going on' with Rodrygo Goes after he remained on the bench for their La Liga opener against Osasuna, continuing his lack of protagonism at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Basque manager has assured he is still relying on him, but actions speak louder than words. His benching against Osasuna made it just one start in Real Madrid's last 13 games in total, over half of those games have now come under Alonso. The Brazilian has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, after seemingly falling behind Franco Mastantuono, Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz in the pecking order. Pini Zahavi travels to London to meet with Liverpool and Arsenal Image via Getty Images According to indykaila, agent Pini Zahavi arrived in London on Wednesday. Rodrygo's agent is his father Eric Goes, but Zahavi, who also represents Robert Lewandowski, has been working with Rodrygo since the start of the summer. Their information is that he was also in Liverpool on Friday to take in the Reds' 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield. They say that Zahavi has requested meetings with Liverpool and Arsenal to discuss a move for Rodrygo. Previously it has been reported that Arsenal would only move for him if sales were made, although their plans in the transfer market could have changed based on Kai Havertz's injury, say The Athletic. Meanwhile Liverpool have Rodrygo noted as an alternative if their move for Alexander Isak collapses. Manchester City out of the picture However it appears one place he will not be headed is Manchester City. They were looking at Rodrygo as an option if Savio Moreira left for Tottenham Hotspur. Yet with Savio now staying at the Etihad, they are no longer in the market for a winger. Los Blancos are reportedly open to a sale for Rodrygo, and would like to receive around €100m for his signature. The 24-year-old, who seemingly has no role at Real Madrid, is also open to moving.
