MGR enabled Brahminism in Dravidian politics: DMK ally party's leader fuels debate

India Today3 days ago
A war of words erupted after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan made controversial remarks about former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran (MGR).Speaking at a memorial function for former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai, Thirumavalavan alleged that MGR was responsible for allowing Brahminism to penetrate Dravidian organisations. He claimed MGR had criticised former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, sowed the seeds of hate politics, and paved the way for a Brahmin woman to become the leader of a Dravidian party. 'Apart from all these criticisms, one good thing that happened due to MGR is that national parties were not allowed to stabilise here,' he said.advertisement
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) hit back strongly, warning that Thirumavalavan had 'no standard' to speak about MGR.'Tamil Nadu people consider MGR as God. If he criticises such a person, he will vanish from politics,' EPS said.Later, Thirumavalavan issued a clarification, saying his comments were not meant to insult MGR.'I spoke about MGR in the context of Tamil Nadu politics. I respect both MGR and Jayalalithaa and have openly appreciated her several times. I had no will to insult MGR,' he said, adding that his remarks referred to how 'hate politics spun around' Karunanidhi.- Ends

EPS: AIADMK stands for minorities, DMK does not

Tirupattur: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said it was his party which supporte minorities in the state whereas DMK failed to protect them. At Ambur in Tirupattur on Thursday, EPS said retired policeman Zakir Hussain, who publicly said his life was in danger and demanded chief minister M K Stalin's attention, was hacked to death in Tirunelveli a few months back. "DMK does not protect minorities. If AIADMK was in power, we would have taken strict action," EPS said. He said it was AIADMK that supported A P J Abdul Kalam to become President. "DMK did not support him. We built memorials for Tipu Sultan and Quaid-e-Millat, and we established Abdul Kalam College of Arts and Science. Minorities must remember what we have done for them," EPS said. "DMK once allied with BJP when Murasoli Maran was a Union minister. It was fine for them then. But if AIADMK allies with BJP, they criticise us," he said reiterating that the alliance with BJP was only to defeat DMK. EPS said Stalin often says that he was jailed under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during Emergency. "But MISA and Emergency were enforced by Congress govt at the Centre — and DMK has allied with them. Stalin is aligning with those who once jailed him but criticises us for allying with BJP," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). False propaganda is being spread branding AIADMK as anti-minorities, says EPS

Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday alleged that a false propaganda was being spread among minorities that the AIADMK had always acted against their welfare. Addressing a public gathering in Vellore as part of his State-wide tour, Mr. Palaniswami said minorities were being made to believe that they would be unsafe under an AIADMK regime. 'This is not true. During its 31 years of [cumulative] rule since the days of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, the AIADMK has always protected the interest of minorities and marginalised sections of society. They [minorities] should not believe the false propaganda,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami listed several welfare measures taken by him and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the welfare of minorities. Under the Jayalalithaa regime, an initiative to distribute free rice to mosques for making nombu kanji (gruel) during the month of Ramzan was launched in 2011, with an allocation of 5,400 tonnes, he said. 'When the Centre stopped extending the grant of ₹6 crore for Haj pilgrims from Tamil Nadu in 2018, the then AIADMK government led by me provided the grant, and even increased it to ₹12 crore in 2021. A permanent accommodation for Haj pilgrims was built in Chennai at a cost of ₹15 crore during AIADMK rule,' he said. In 2015, the then Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, secured around 2.4 lakh crore in foreign direct investment, and signed 98 agreements with multinational companies (MNCs) to provide job opportunities for unemployed educated youth in the State, he said. 'Following in her footsteps, a global investors' meet was organised in Chennai when I was Chief Minister in 2019. I signed 304 agreements with MNCs to get them to set up units and provide jobs in the State. The fruits of our labour are being reaped by the ruling DMK as the youth are getting jobs in these MNCs,' he added.

UP: Bhim Army activists protest over Lord Hanuman photo in Magistrate's office

LUCKNOW: Bhim Army activists staged a massive protest in Bareilly on Thursday. Their anger was triggered by the presence of a picture of Lord Hanuman at the City Magistrate's office instead of a photograph of Dr BR Ambedkar. The protestors asserted that the absence of Dr Ambedkar's image amounted to an insult to the 'Constitution Maker' and a violation of protocol. Activists had visited the Collectorate to seek permission for an upcoming event led by MP Chandrashekhar of the Azad Samaj Party (ASP) on August 17. Instead of Dr Ambedkar's photo, they found Lord Hanuman's displayed prominently. Moreover, they were not granted the permission for the event. This prompted ASP members to initiate an immediate confrontation with City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri. The protestors alleged that the magistrate went on to declare that he believed in Lord Hanuman and not in Ambedkar—a statement they found deeply offensive. They claimed the magistrate, from a Brahmin background, used his office as a private space to display his beliefs while ignoring constitutional norms. According to Sunil Gautam, state general secretary of the Azad Samaj Party, government offices are legally required to display images of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Ambedkar. He accused Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of appointing officials who lacked respect for the constitutional figures. The Bhim Army's intellectual conference, scheduled for August 17, had its permission abruptly withdrawn. Activists decried this as a calculated move to derail their event. Attempts to get comments from the magistrate went in vain.
