‘Captain America: Brave New World' Muscling $12M Thursday Night

Yahoo14-02-2025

EXCLUSIVE: Neither Los Angeles rain nor Northeast snow are keeping audiences away from cinemas tonight as Disney/Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, a continuation of both Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier and 2008's The Incredible Hulk, is eyeing a $12M Thursday after previews which began at 2PM earlier today.
Where does that stack up to other MCU titles? Well, it's higher than 2014's Captain America: Winter Soldier which collected $10.2M in previews on its way to a $95M opening.

It's also under the $17.5M previews of the last MCU title over Presidents Day weekend, 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which made its way to a $106.1M 3-day and $120.3M 4-day. Brave New World isn't expected to traverse to Quantumania levels with tracking pegging a $80M 3-day and $94M 4-day. Brave New World was always a grounded action film, nothing in the multiverse sense of the word, selling itself entire on Red Hulk (how appropriate for Valentine's Day).
Bad news: Rotten Tomatoes critics got antsy while watching the Anthony Mackie movie giving it a 52% critics score. Good news: Audiences tonight are giving it a tolerable 82%.
Social media analytics corp RelishMix reports that the social media universe for the Julius Onah directed movie stands at just under 600M, which is an average figure for superhero movies; Brave New World running 21% below genre norms across TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram combined. Ya wanna know what the social media reach was for Deadpool & Wolverine before opening? Try 1.15 billion followers. Ever Thor: Love & Thunder was at a high 963M-plus before that pic projected onto the screen. Mostly all of the cast on this Captain America are social and activated, except for non-social Harrison Ford. Mackie counted 5.4M fans across all platforms before opening, Liv Tyler stood at 7.2M while Giancarlos Esposito has at 4M.
As far as the chatter online, RelishMix says it's mixed on Brave New World. There are some fans who are excited to see Mackie picking up the shield from Chris Evans, and who are destined to go because of Red Hulk. But 'negative-leaning chatter on Captain America: Brave New World hears trembles from fans who feel Marvel has lost its way. Comments include, 'I remember a time when I used to get hyped for a Marvel film. I saw this poster (and trailer) and felt nothing.' and 'I want the film to do well, but I can't shake the feeling that this movie is just being sent out there to die. Prove me wrong, Disney.' The jumps in tone are turning some off, sharing, 'Its nuts how this movie is simultaneously playing up the 'grizzled espionage' angle from Winter Soldier, but is also like CLAP FOR RED HULK,' while others are pessimistically curious in the character of Sabra, given the character's ties to Israel in the comics with the current geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.'
We'll have more for you in the AM.
Disney didn't respond to Deadline's comment on the projections we were hearing tonight.
On Friday, Brave New World opens in 4,100 theatres, including 400 IMAX auditoriums, 950 Premium Large Format screens, 2,500+ 3D locations, 325 D-Box/4D motion screens, and 100 ScreenX locations.

Gwyneth Paltrow Gets Real About Disliking Being On Social Media As A Famous Person: 'I'm Like An Old Lady'

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. If nothing else, you can, seemingly always, say that actress Gwyneth Paltrow is honest. The proud vagina candle maven has been known to open up about everything from hiding in her parents house after winning her Oscar at 26, to living with ex Chris Martin after they split and how hard it is to be an empty-nester. Now the Marvel star is opening up about being 'an old lady' when it comes to social media. While it's not impossible to be famous today and stay off social media (or at least not put your whole life online), it's not something that's done on a regular basis. In fact, most people, whether they're celebrities or not, use social media regularly, but the pressure to show every aspect of one's life must certainly be greater the more well known a person is. During an episode of The Goop Podcast where Gwyneth Paltrow spoke with actress Kerry Washington, the welcoming lifestyle company founder spoke about her feelings on social media, and admitted that some of her reticence likely has to do with age. As she said: There's a part of it I think that just is like a pre-Internet kid. I always wrestle a little bit with, 'Why are we having to put everything on social media? We just met with our video team. I'm always like, 'Chase, I don't want to be on Instagram!' You know? OMG. Gwynnie! I don't want to be on Instagram, either! But I am, because it's just what people do now. Of course, no one is expecting me to share literally everything I do during the day, so I'm totally free to sit back, follow a bunch of other folks and enjoy the view. When fans see Paltrow on social media, well, they want her to share things. Several stars have spoken about the immense pressure that can come from being online and opening your life up to fans. It has, in fact, caused a number of them to at least take breaks from it. Recently, A Complete Unknown star and Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro admitted that she's deleted her social media several times, and had to do it while filming that movie and again as positive reactions came in. Other famous folk have talked about doing the same social media 'detox' for a while, with Only Murders in the Building lead Selena Gomez calling the process 'the most rewarding gift.' This is likely because, as Home Town host Erin Napier once noted, regardless of what you post, the comments can be 'really rude.' While that can certainly harm one's mental health, however, the potential positives tend to outweigh some of the negatives for Paltrow, and that's exactly why she continues to use it. As she added: And yet, especially around the topic of mental health, or anything really that's heavily stigmatized, social media is this way to destigmatize. ... [like] wait, this is how you change culture and the tools right now are social media. So even though I'm like an old lady trying to get with the times of how this works... [I try to] get comfortable with it. And, lucky for us, she has gotten 'comfortable' with it and continues to share with fans on a regular basis.

Could Trump pardon Diddy and end his trial?

Sean "Diddy" Combs is being tried in a New York courtroom for racketeering and sexual trafficking. Could that daily drama vanish instantly if President Donald Trump pardoned the embattled rapper? "Yes, it could," says Brian Kalt, law professor at Michigan State University College of Law, who focuses on legal issues and the presidency. According to Kalt, Trump — who appears to be in the middle of a pardoning spree — would be within his presidential rights to extend a preemptive pardon to fellow New Yorker Combs, who has been described by witnesses so far as violent and abusive. "These are federal charges (against Combs), so that's the main limit. The matter has be federal, it has to be criminal vs. civil, and related to something that's already been done," says Kalt. "But the person doesn't have to even be charged yet, or convicted. The Supreme Court has said preemptive pardons are OK." Trump weighed in on the possibility Friday, May 30, in the Oval Office. "Nobody's asked" about a pardon, the president said. "But I know people are thinking about it. I know they're thinking about it. I think some people have been very close to asking." Trump added, "I haven't spoken to him in years. He really liked me a lot." 'Nobody's asked': President Trump doesn't rule out pardoning Sean 'Diddy' Combs Typically, one of the last gestures from an outgoing president is a pardon. In President Joe Biden's final days in office, he famously pardoned his son, Hunter, convicted of federal gun felonies and federal tax charges. At the end of Trump's first term, he granted clemency to political allies such as Roger Stone, found guilty of obstructing a congressional investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and related offenses. But pardons can take place during a president's term, says Kalt. The right was established in Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution, which among other things gives the president "power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment." Kalt says the power to pardon is derived from the British monarch's historic right and stems from a recognition that criminal law was often too harsh, and it was important to have a safety valve. "The president was the best person to be that safety valve because of his political accountability," he says. But that's where things get murky, he adds, noting that Republican lawmakers "don't appear willing to hold the president accountable" for granting pardons, meaning they aren't costing him in terms of political capital. In contrast, President Gerald Ford's controversial pardoning of disgraced President Richard Nixon was perceived so negatively "that it probably cost Ford re-election in 1976," Kalt says. In just over 100 days since taking office, Trump has issued pardons to a broad range of personalities. They include Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of the reality show "Chrisley Knows Best," who were convicted in 2022 of swindling $36 million from Atlanta banks and being tax evaders, and rapper NBA YoungBoy, who in 2024 was sentenced to two years in prison for weapons possession. He also pardoned former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, convicted of wire fraud and extortion, and Jan. 6 participant and "Bob's Burgers" actor Jay Johnston. The reason many presidents issue pardons at the end of their terms is precisely to avoid political fallout, says Kalt. In that sense, Trump's brash approach suggests he has no concerns about such ramifications. "I don't agree with these pardons on their merits, but the fact that he did them when he is politically accountable as opposed to slinking out the door does add some legitimacy to them in that sense," he says. "With pardons, you don't need Congress, you wave your magic wand and it happens. You can see the appeal for a president, particularly one like Trump." One can also see the appeal for those such as Combs, whose ordeal could end instantly should Trump's pardon "wand" wave his way.
