Top LSU football rival makes big decision about starting quarterback

USA Today2 days ago
One of LSU's biggest rivals made a major decision in its quarterback battle. According to ESPN, Alabama has settled on Ty Simpson as QB1.
Simpson was a five-star recruit in 2022, per the Rivals Industry Rankings. Despite having to sit behind Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe, Simpson waited his turn, passing up the transfer portal. Simpson's path mirrors the one LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier took. Nussmeier sat three seasons before taking over the starter role in his fourth year on campus.
In 2024, Simpson attempted just 25 passes. He completed 14 of them for 167 yards.
Alabama's roster is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. The Crimson Tide have stars at wide receiver with Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard. The offensive line is expected to be one of the best in the country. On defense, Kalen DeBoer's squad returns eight starters on a unit that led the SEC in turnovers.
If Simpson is as advertised, Alabama is a national title contender. The Crimson Tide rank No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, one spot ahead of LSU at No. 9.
When does LSU football play Alabama in 2025?
LSU and Alabama won't meet until Nov. 8. As usual, the game is one of the most anticipated of the college football season. Alabama is nearly a touchdown favorite as of early August.

Legendary football coach returns to the sidelines as Alabama school names him interim coach

Legendary football coach returns to the sidelines as Alabama school names him interim coach originally appeared on The Sporting News One of the legendary, albeit controversial, high school head football coaches in the country is going to lead another team in the 2025 season. Rush Propst, who has guided programs in Alabama and Georgia, has been named the interim coach at Coosa Christian, located in Gadsden, Ala. He is taking over for head coach Mark O'Bryant, who was recently suspended for the 2025 season, confirming that in an interview with O'Bryant led the Conquerors to a 9-1 record in '24 but was banned in the postseason and had to forfeit five games due to the use of an ineligible player. Because of the school suspending O'Bryant, the Alabama High School Athletic Association lifted the imposed postseason ban, meaning the Conquerors are eligible for the playoffs should they qualify. Now, Coosa Christian turns its program temporarily over to someone who, though extremely successful, has a checkered past himself. Propst has won 296 career games along with seven state championships. He may be well known for his tenure at another Alabama school, Hoover, where he won five state titles from 1999-2007. The program was also featured on the MTV documentary series Two-A-Days, which filmed for two of the Buccaneers' seasons. However, Propst resigned at Hoover in 2007 in the wake of the program having to forfeit several wins due to using an ineligible player. He later coached at Georgia schools Colquitt County and Valdosta, as well as another Alabama school, Pell City. While at Colquitt County, during a 2015 playoff game, Propst head-butted one of his players, which initially led to him being suspended for the 2016 season, though the decision was eventually appealed. Propst resigned at Pell City following the 2023 season - his only season there - after the team went 1-10. Now, Propst gets another chance to lead a team, while perhaps getting the opportunity to record his 300th career win. DJ Pickett may not be the only LSU football freshman making an impact on defense

LSU football cornerback DJ Pickett will make an immediate impact in 2025. The five-star freshman was one of LSU's most talented defenders the moment he arrived on campus. But he's not the only freshman with a chance to see the field. LSU safety CJ Jimcoily could eventually earn a spot in the rotation, too. Jimcoily was a three-star in the finals Rivals Industry Rankings of 2025 -- not the exact profile of a guy who plays right away in the SEC. But Jimcoily's strong early impression, along with LSU's depth concerns at safety, could work in Jimcoily's favor. Jimcoily is playing the STAR position in Blake Baker's defense. Harold Perkins has a strong grip on the starting spot, but down the depth chart, it's wide open. While the Industry Rankings had Jimcoily as a three-star, Rivals was high on Jimcoliy, ranking the Nashville product as a four-star and No. 13 at his position. At 6-foot-3, Jimcoily has the size you want in a safety/linebacker hybrid. It's exactly what Baker is looking for at the STAR spot. I wouldn't expect Jimcoily to play a lot, or even at all, early. But as LSU enters the stretch and depth is tested, LSU might need the freshman. LSU wasn't afraid to rely on true freshman defenders in 2024. If a guy is ready, Brian Kelly and Baker will put them on the field. Jimcoily could be playing a role when games matter in November.

LSU football coordinator says veteran wide receiver can take LSU's offense to next level

LSU football needs to up its explosive play rate in 2025. LSU ranked No. 25 nationally with 431.5 yards, but not much of that yardage came from the big play. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was effective in the quick game and intermediate areas, but LSU lacked the personnel to push the ball down the field. LSU's lack of a run game played a part but LSU didn't have the speed on the outside to run by defensive backs. Chris Hilton does, though. Hilton finally got back to full health in LSU's final two games of 2024 and it added another element to LSU's offense. Hilton combined for 218 yards and three touchdowns vs. Oklahoma and Baylor and LSU's passing game looked like a complete product. Hilton is gearing up for year five at LSU. And with an offseason of good health, a true breakout year could be in store. Hilton i entering year five at LSU. After a healthy offseason, Hilton is staring at a career year. LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan is ready to see Hilton's full impact. "I think you can look at the last couple games last year, our ability to attack vertically really changes when he's out there," Sloan said. Hilton averages 21.2 yards per catch in his career at LSU. Even when the consistency hasn't been there, the big play potential has. "Being able to push the ball down the field is a huge thing. Chris has been consistent. I think he has a great attitude, great body language and is attacking every day," Sloan said. Hilton signed with LSU in 2021 -- the same class as Nussmeier. Ed Orgeron was still head coach when Hilton signed his letter of intent. Hilton was a four-star recruit and No. 79-ranked player in the class. He's talented, but injuries have prevented Hilton from being a top contributor on a weekly basis. "He's going to play really good football. I've been excited for him. I know he's been through a lot," Sloan said. LSU's offense needs to take another step if it hopes to reach the College Football Playoff. The Tigers can't do that without an explosive passing game. "When safeties come down, we need to be able to push the ball down the field. And Chris absolutely helps us. Because ultimately it's about scoring points. It's not just about yards, right? Yards is one thing. But we've got to score points. And that comes from, you know, explosive – a lot of times it comes from explosive play touchdowns. And he definitely gives us the opportunity to do that," Sloan said.
