"Smashing Machine", "After the Hunt", "Bugonia" Eyed for Venice 2025 Lineup
Dwayne Johnson, Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Emma Stone, and Emily Blunt are among the stars featured in hotly anticipated new movies expected to launch from the 2025 Venice Film Festival.
With one month to go until the Lido lineup is unveiled, Venice's artistic director, Alberto Barbera, is racing against the clock to assemble the festival's 82nd edition, slots for which are still in flux, what's clear, however, is that there will be no shortage of the type of buzzy titles that make Venice a prime awards season driver.
Benny Safdie's 'The Smashing Machine,' featuring Dwayne Johnson as two-time UFC heavyweight champ Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino's #MeToo-themed thriller 'After the Hunt' starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield; and 'Bugonia,' the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone — who were last at the fest in 2023 with the Oscar-winning 'Poor Things' — are all likely to be set for a Venice sendoff.
Angelina Jolie, after being on the Lido last year with Pablo Larraín's 'Maria,' should also be back in Venice with Alice Winocour's drama 'Couture,' set in the Paris fashion world.
Netflix looks likely to be on the Lido with Noah Baumbach's comedy-drama 'Jay Kelly,' starring George Clooney as its enigmatic titular character, and also with Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein,' a new take on the classic monster movie with Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth.
Another Netflix film that could surface at Venice is 'A House of Dynamite,' the next feature by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow ('The Hurt Locker,' 'Zero Dark Thirty') with a cast comprising Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Greta Lee, Gabriel Basso, and Jared Harris.
The official logline reads: 'When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond.'
As Mubi boss Efe Cakarel revealed, Jim Jarmusch's triptych picture 'Father Mother Sister Brother,' starring Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver, is also believed to be up for a Lido competition slot. Mubi may also be launching Paolo Sorrentino's new movie 'La Grazia,' led by 'The Great Beauty' star Toni Servillo, from Venice if it's ready in time.
Italian titles considered shoo-ins for Lido competition debuts include 'Duse,' Pietro Marcello's biopic about legendary Italian stage diva Eleonora Duse, played by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi; and 'Below the Clouds,' the new high-profile doc by Gianfranco Rosi, whose 'Sacro GRA' scooped the 2013 Venice Golden Lion. 'A Year of School' by rising auteur Laura Samani, who made a splash with 'Small Body' in 2021, is expected to surface somewhere in the official selection.
Titles in the mix from Asia include Fan Bingbing-starrer 'Mother Bhumi' from Malaysian filmmaker Chong Keat Aun and Park Chan-wook's new film 'No Other Choice.'
As previously announced, two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne will preside over the main jury.
The 82nd edition of Venice will run August 27-September 6. The lineup will be announced on July 22.

Yara Sameh The Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' will open in standard theaters and in Imax worldwide on April 24, moving from its earlier planned October date. Lionsgate is releasing the film domestically, with Universal handling distribution in the rest of the world except for Japan, which is handled by Kino Films. Antoine Fuqua directs, with John Logan as screenwriter and Jaafar Jackson starring as his late uncle. Graham King, an Oscar winner for 'The Departed,' produces. ''Michael' explores the global superstar's journey to become known to the world as the King of Pop, presenting an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known,' the synopsis reads. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in May that the movie was 'likely' to move to 2026. Despite it wrapped production in May 2024, the project underwent reshoots and came in with a lengthy initial cut. Earlier, there had been discussion about releasing the film in two parts. The film was last reported to carry a $155 million production budget. 'Michael' also stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long as family heads Joe and Katherine Jackson. Miles Teller plays John Branca, Jackson's attorney and advisor. Larenz Tate plays Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, with Laura Harrier as music executive Suzanne de Passe and Kat Graham will appear as Diana Ross. Other cast members include Jessica Sula as La Toya Jackson, Michael's older sister; Liv Symone as Gladys Knight; Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark; KeiLyn Durrel Jones as Jackson's former security-turned-trusted friend and confidante Bill Bray; and Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones, who first met Michael Jackson when he was just 12 years old. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Julia Roberts' "After the Hunt" to Open New York Film Festival
Yara Sameh Luca Guadagnino's 'After the Hunt' will open the 63rd New York Film Festival on September 26. The film boasts an all-star cast led by Julia Roberts in a story about the impact of an alleged sexual assault on an Ivy League campus. Michael Stuhlbarg, Ayo Edebiri, Chloë Sevigny and Andrew Garfield co-star in 'After the Hunt,' which Amazon MGM Studios backed. Nora Garrett wrote the screenplay. Previous opening night films at the festival have included Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman,' Joel Coen's 'The Tragedy of Macbeth' and Todd Haynes' 'May December.' RaMell Ross's 'Nickle Boys' opened last year's edition. Billed as the film's North American premiere, 'After the Hunt' will return Guadagnino to the festival, a place where he previously screened 'Call Me by Your Name' and 'Queer.' 'After the Hunt' will screen at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, September 26, with Guadagnino and members of the cast in attendance. The festival, which is a key stop for awards hopefuls, will take place through October 13. 'After the Hunt' will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. According to a plot description from the festival, Roberts plays a 'chilly, seemingly self-assured Yale philosophy professor Alma Olsson, whose comfortable professional career and domestic life with her mercurial husband Frederik (Stuhlbarg) are thrown into chaos after her PhD candidate protégée Maggie (Edebiri) accuses Alma's longtime colleague and friend Hank (Garfield) of sexual assault. As a result, the air of rarefied academic privilege on campus begins to dissolve, and Alma must navigate minefields of gender, sexuality, race, and institutional power, all while trying to reconcile her own difficult choices with the demons of her past.' 'I have always found the New York Film Festival to be an arbiter of global cinema. For over 60 years it has been a festival that makes audiences open their minds and hearts to the most daring and compelling global cinema from both established and emerging filmmakers,' said Guadagnino. 'To be invited to open the 63rd edition is a tremendous responsibility and honor. I, alongside the incredible cast and crew and our companions at Amazon MGM Studios who made 'After the Hunt' possible, am elated and thrilled to bring to New York our tale of morality and power.' 'We are excited to open this year's festival with Luca Guadagnino's latest, which confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today,' said Dennis Lim, artistic director, New York Film Festival. 'Brilliantly acted and crafted, 'After the Hunt' is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment.' Imagine's Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum produced 'After the Hunt' with Guadagnino. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Yara Sameh 'Wednesday' has been renewed for Season 3 at Netflix. The news comes ahead of the second season premiere of the Jenna Ortega-led supernatural comedy, which is the most popular English-language Netflix series of all time. 'Wednesday' stars Ortega as the darkly funny Wednesday Addams, who is expelled from her school after dumping piranhas into the pool, and is transferred to a private academy for outcasts. The series also stars Gwendoline Christie as the shapeshifting principal of Wednesday's new school, Emma Myers as her werewolf roommate Enid, and Riki Lindhome as her school therapist. The cast is rounded out by Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Christina Ricci, Steve Buscemi, Victor Dorobantu, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Billie Piper, Isaac Ordonez, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, Noah Taylor, Luis Guzmán, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. 'Wednesday' became an awards magnet after its first season exploded on Netflix in 2022, garnering four Emmy awards. 'Wednesday' Season 2 will debut in two parts on August 6 and September 3. In the second season, Wednesday Addams returns to Nevermore and must face off against a new tormentor to prevent Enid's death. 'Wednesday' is created by showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on characters by Charles Addams. Tim Burton is an executive producer alongside Steve Stark, Andrew Mittman, Gail Berman, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman, Tommy Harper, Kevin Lafferty and Kevin Miserocchi. Carmen Pepelea produces, and Danny Elfman and Chris Bacon are the composers. 'We're beyond thrilled she'll be returning to stalk the halls of Nevermore in Season 3. This time, she'll unearth more of the school's sinister secrets — and descend even deeper into the Addams family crypt. Or, as Wednesday would say: 'Nothing brings a family together like a good exhumation.'' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
