Smurf movie reviews: New film starring Rihanna slammed as 'waste of time'

Daily Mirror18-07-2025
The new Smurf movie, starring Rihanna and many more huge names, has been slammed by critics as one even called the film a 'Smurf-tacular heap of Smurf'
The new Smurf movie starring Rihanna and James Corden has divided critics as one even called the film a "Smurf-tacular heap of Smurf". There was huge excitement for the musical comedy animated movie due to its ensemble cast, which included Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Kurt Russell and John Goodman.
Smurf follows Smurfette (played by RiRi), leading the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save Papa Smurf after he was mysteriously taken by evil wizards Gargamel and his brother Razamel. The movie only just came out but is already being bombarded by negative reviews from critics and fans alike.

One disappointed critic wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Smurfs is a Smurfing waste of time that falls just short of being a Smurf-tacular heap of Smurf due to some colourful visuals.
"Beyond this, nothing about this story is even remotely interesting because of how recycled it all feels.
"I even hesitate calling this a kid's movie because it could possibly derail the cognitive skills they've been developing."

They went on to call the script 'lazy' and the performances 'bland'. One critic for IGN said the movie could easily occupy kids for a time, but the jokes could also make them restless.
It was written: "There are enough colours and sparkles to keep kids occupied for a time, though it's just as easy to see them getting restless (as was the case at my press screening) when Smurfs begins repeating itself and relying too heavily on laughs from the grown-ups in the room."

Another reviewer also praised the visuals before criticising the actual storyline. Writing for The Guardian, the critic wrote: "This very uninteresting and uninspired story plods along for an hour and a half, though there are some almost-interesting surreal scenes when our heroes find themselves in weird alt-universe dimensions."
One critic shared their confusion on why the Smurfs ended up in real-life Paris, where they were seen running past Parisians' feet without ever interacting with a human.
"And no one seems at all concerned by the presence of tiny, blue elves at the discothèque, which renders every single live-action sequence pointless, while implying that the local drug supply is very, very good," they said for The Independent.

Some enjoyed the kids' movie, as one called it "a light-hearted and entertaining movie for longtime fans.
"While many big names are credited, they don't have a significant impact on the film itself," the critic wrote on Nerdtropolis.

Myleene Klass' ex-husband's bitter words after divorce turned sour following 'cheating'

I'm A Celebrity star Myleene Klass was married to her ex-husband Graham Quinn for just six months before they split up, with the exes having criticised each other since then The ex-husband of Myleene Klass once criticised her after their "contentious" divorce more than a decade ago. The former couple, who had been married for just months when they split up, have both spoken out since separating. ‌ Myleene, now 47, met bodyguard Graham Quinn whilst in the band Hear'Say. The exes, who share two teenage children, were together for years before getting married in 2011. They split months later, with Graham reportedly leaving her, and their "bitter" divorce is said to have then been finalised in 2013. ‌ Their relationship has made headlines again this week after Myleene spoke about it on the We Need to Talk podcast. In an episode released earlier today, the I'm A Celebrity star accused her ex-husband of having cheated on her. ‌ Years ago, following their split, Myleene vowed that she would never get married again. She also blamed herself for not having a prenup, with her previously saying: "I'll never let that happen again, so help me God. If I'd decided to gamble with my money, I could take that, but someone taking it ... No." Graham later hit out at his ex-wife and dismissed the suggestion that he'd taken money from her. As reported at the time, he wrote on X, then known as Twitter, in 2015: "I've stayed quiet for three years now but enough is enough. Please explain to me how I took your money? I lost so much money from our divorce and our house that we bought together." He also suggested that Myleene wasn't letting him see their two children, writing: "One day I hope you will put the interests of your children first and let them see their father." He's said to have added in a post a decade ago: "Instead of focusing on what lies you can tell to boost your career." A spokesperson for Myleene issued a statement to the Mirror at the time. They told us: "I personally think it's very sad behaviour." Myleene spoke about her marriage to Graham on the We Need to Talk podcast recently. She claimed that, prior to getting married, she caught him being unfaithful with a celebrity during birthday celebrations at a party in her home. ‌ She said: "I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony." Myleene added on the podcast: "They weren't having sex but they were like unzipping each other. 'It's not what you think,' but I'm like 'it is what I think'." Myleene, who said that her life "broke apart" in the aftermath, said that Graham apologised and blamed alcohol. Myleene later shared on the podcast that she split from her now ex-husband after she later suspected him of cheating again. Whilst he was working away, she recalled travelling to where he was based to surprise him. She said on the podcast: "I [went to] where I knew he was working and did a 'surprise'. And I knew there'd been someone in that room." Myleene suggested that Graham decided to end the relationship, leading to their divorce, which has been described as "contentious". She said: "On the day that he decided it was over, he just pushed this little Post-It note across the table with the figure he wanted."

Former BBC presenter reveals why he stepped back from his role

Gary Lineker revealed his BBC departure was a case of "quit or be quitted" rather than entirely his own choice, following a controversial social media post. The post, which featured a rat image, was about Zionism, and Lineker later apologised, stating he stands against all forms of racism. As a result, Lineker will no longer present BBC coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season. He maintained his impartiality regarding the war in Gaza, stating he has "no skin in the game" and is "anti the killing of children". Lineker has since toned down his social media use, coming off X (formerly Twitter) due to its "horrible" and "nasty" nature.

New Pride & Prejudice series has Netflix fans threatening to BOYCOTT: 'You cannot be serious'

Netflix has sparked uproar after releasing a first look at the casting for the new Pride & Prejudice series - with some fans now threatening to boycott the steamer altogether. The six-part series follows the classic love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy straight from Jane Austen's 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice. Both the 1995 BBC series and the 2005 film adaptation are beloved by literature readers and film buffs alike. But this latest recreation appears to already be upsetting fans. Earlier today, Netflix took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a cast picture of the Bennet family women on set. 'We know you've been yearning for a sneak peek. Pride & Prejudice is officially in production,' the post read. 'Here's a first look featuring Emma Corrin, Freya Mavor, Olivia Colman, Hopey Parish, Rhea Norwood, and Hollie Avery as the Bennet women.' Emma Corrin is set to star as the witty Elizabeth Bennet, while Jack Lowden takes on the brooding role of Mr. Darcy, and Olivia Colman plays the nervous Mrs. Bennet. But fans immediately rushed to the comments to express their distaste at the prospect as one wrote: 'Not to self: unsubscribe from Netflix immediately, today,' someone wrote. 'This casting is awful what the f**k,' another added. 'You cannot be serious,' someone else said. 'Oh help… praying this isn't a cock up like Persuasion. 'Actually scratch that… this is a reminder to me to unsubscribe,' another shared. Other members of the cast include Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet, Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, Jamie Demetriou as Mr. Collins, Daryl McCormack as Mr. Bingley, and Louis Partridge as Mr. Wickham, per Variety. More actors include Rhea Norwood as Lydia Bennet, Siena Kelly as Caroline Bingley, and Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourg. Hopey Parish and Hollie Avery are making their acting debuts as Mary Bennet and Kitty Bennet respectively. The director and screenwriter of Heartstopper, Euros Lyn and Dolly Alderton, respectively, are taking on the series. 'Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,' Alderton said in a statement, per the outlet. 'Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.' The limited series will finish filming in the UK at the end of 2025, per What's On Netflix.
