Fishermen federation opposes ‘handing over' of marine resources to corporates

The BJP on Friday (August 8, 2025) said the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, damaged his own credibility while alleging large-scale electoral manipulation in Maharashtra in 2024. At a press conference, Union Minister and BJP leader Bhupender Yadav said, 'Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was talking about dropping an 'atom bomb'. In 2024, about 40 lakh votes increased between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, but Rahul Gandhi claimed that there was an increase of one crore votes, so there is an error margin of 60%,' he said. 'In Maharashtra, they [the Congress and allies] won most of the seats where the votes had increased. In Mumbra-Kalwa Assembly constituency number 149, where voters went up by 41,663, NCP-Shiv Sena's Jitendra Ahwad won the seat by 96,228 votes,' he said, citing several other instances wherein the Opposition candidates won by large margins. Stating that the addition or deletion of votes is an independent exercise of the ECI, Mr. Yadav said Mr. Gandhi should file an affidavit on oath before the ECI with respect to his accusations. 'However, he has not done so. His modus operandi has been to 'shoot and scoot, ' said Mr. Yadav, alleging that the Opposition disrupted parliamentary proceedings to evade discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

CPI lauds Centre's stand on crude oil purchase from Russia
Communist Party of India (CPI) national Secretary K. Narayana on Friday appreciated the Indian government's firm stand on purchase of crude oil from Russia at cheaper rates despite the mounting pressure from the United States. However, he said that while the government refines and exports this oil to foreign nations, it has failed to provide petroleum products like diesel and petrol at reduced prices to its own citizens. 'This reflects a profit-driven motive, with no regard for the hardships of the common people', he said in a release issued here, while demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi redirect the profits gained from refining and exporting Russian crude oil to the people by reducing fuel prices. Thanking the Ministry of External Affairs for maintaining country's long-standing friendship with Russia, which, he said 'dated back to the Soviet era', Mr. Narayana recalled Russia's support to India during critical moments, including the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, when Soviet submarines came in support of the Indian forces. India must defend its sovereign rights and reject the hypocritical approach of the United States, he concluded.
