Clodagh McKenna: I never compare myself to anyone…least of all Meghan Markle

Celebrity chef and author Clodagh McKenna is about to launch her first foray into the lifestyle brand arena – but she's quick to rule out any comparisons with Meghan Markle.
'I've never in my life, and it's always been a rule of mine, I never compare myself to others,' she told Extra.ie.
'I think it's really good mentally not to compare because it gives you complete creativity to do exactly what you want to do.'
Speaking about her new range, Honey by Clodagh – – which includes her Lemon Grove line of napkins, matching tablecloth, cushion covers and apron – – the writer and presenter said she wanted to 'create a beautiful space for people to go and get inspiration for entertaining'. And she insists the inspiration extends beyond her product line.
'So Honey by Clodagh, there's lots up there, you can get recipes as well, there's a whole entertaining section, and we're adding to it bit by bit every week – we're adding cocktail recipes next week,' she said.
'It's a store predominantly, but I also wanted to create a little hub, we're calling it 'the hive' – so we have a Hive newsletter which goes out every week… so we're creating a little hive, a kind of community for entertainment.'
The glamorous Cork woman, who lives with husband Harry Herbert at Broadspear on the Highclere Park estate where Downton Abbey is filmed, has also just launched 'the honey that I make on my farm'.
And as if she doesn't have enough on her plate, McKenna is also about to serve up her ninth and 'most personal' book – – Clodagh's Happy Cooking.
This time around, she says the focus is inspired by her attempts to eat healthier. Clodagh McKenna. Pic: David Fisher/REX/Shutterstock for NTA
'I'm not someone who lives off celery sticks all week long, that's never going to be me. I love my big, gorgeous dinners and a glass of wine at the weekend.
'But then when it comes to Monday, I definitely get into a different frame of mind.
'A few years ago, I just thought I've got to focus on eating really well and learning more about ingredients that are good for me and making sure that I get them into my diet. And I think that, as we all get older, you know, going into your 40s, 50s and 60s and the rest, you start thinking about your body more, like feeding it and how you can get better energy, and when you start eating well also, it affects your happiness.'
Speaking of which, McKenna recently celebrated a landmark milestone with a big blow-out birthday bash to mark her 50th year: 'It was fabulous, yeah, I turned 50.'
She added: 'I'm grateful for feeling confident, I'm grateful for knowing who I am and I'm grateful for my husband and family and friends, I've got such an amazing family, both my own Irish family and my new English family. I'm really lucky, as you get older that becomes more and more important, it becomes the number-one thing in your life.'
She is encouraged by how things are evolving for women over 40 but would love to see people embracing their age more. Harry Herbert and Clodagh McKenna. Pic: Clodagh McKenna/Instagram
'I think it's changed a lot, which is incredible – – even in the last five years, I think for women it's just changed so much.
'Even if you look at all the rock stars that are out there, from J-Lo, 55, to Beyoncé, 43, years ago people would have thought being in your 40s and being such a megastar, you'd have to be in your 30s – it's all changed so much.
'It's amazing because when you're working on your craft, you only get better at it with time.
'And when you really hone your craft and you have all your experience, you're at a point in your life where a lot of women are in their 40s, 50s and 60s, they become confident and they know who they are – that's when they are producing their best work.
'What I would love to see is that we're all striving to be the best for the age that we are, rather than trying to be younger or older, just the best for the age that we are.
'I hate seeing people trying to change what age they are by anything they do to do themselves or feeling pressured to look younger. I think it's really important that we try to look the best or be the best for our own age and for our own moment in life.'
And her motto for living life at 50? 'It's that your dreams start when you wake up in the morning.'

Suzanne Harrington: The narrative of helpless man stolen by pushy woman is being wheeled out again

What do Yoko Ono, Meghan Markle and Nicola Peltz have in common? Apart from being: (a) minted; (b) female, and (c) married to past and present versions of British royalty? Hint — it's to do with (c). First Yoko, then Meghan, now Nicola. Each has been accused of abducting their British spouse and trafficking them to the US, where they were/ are being held in diamond-encrusted captivity, 'controlled' by their conniving lady wives. Not literally. Not like Jeffrey Epstein — more of an emotional trafficking, with each of the three hapless husbands going seven shades of Patty Hearst, professing love for their captors as the British tabloids continue to go through cycles of performative apoplexy with side bars of conjecture, 'insiders' and 'sources'. Older readers will remember how Yoko broke up The Beatles, while the more contemporaneous recognise how Meghan Markle broke up the British royal family. And now Nicola Peltz is breaking up Britain's other royal family, the Golden Spice Balls dynasty. Nicola who? For those still stubbornly refusing to spend their lives online keeping up with the far grander lives of American billionaire heiresses, this column is here to fill in your blanks. Nicola Peltz is married to Brooklyn Beckham, first born of David and Victoria. Brooklyn — named after the geographical location his mother first discovered she was pregnant with him (imagine if she'd been in Merthyr Tydfil) — is currently married to Ms Peltz and engaged in a 'feud' with Brand Beckham, conducted via cryptic Instagram posts and a marked absence from his dad's 50th birthday shenanigans. Beckham Jnr appears to have, as they say in Leytonstone, the right hump. So how is this Beckham internecine situation the fault of his American billionaire heiress wife? You may well ask. Just as Prince Harry, having married another wealthy American, had the right hump with the Windsors, British tabloids found it more convenient to blame Ms Markle for her husband's distancing himself from his family of origin. This raised two questions — how dare Ms Markle fill Harry's head with Californian nonsense about being happy, and what kind of royal would choose Californian sunshine over a lifetime of unveiling statues in the rain and asking people if they'd come far. Rather than accept that John Lennon no longer wanted to be a Beatle, or that Harry Windsor no longer wanted to be a prince, nor can the UK media get its head around how young Brooklyn, vendor of hot sauce, taker of blurry elephant photos, and poster baby of nepo, no longer wants to be a brand ambassador for the family firm. A bit of woman-blaming is therefore required. Hence the acreage devoted to alleged antipathy between Ms Peltz and Mummy Beckham, because bitchfights make clickbait. Meghan Markle had an entire palace media ecosystem to grapple with, while Yoko Ono endured the double whammy of being a woman and a foreigner who nicked a national treasure and spirited him away to New York and a life of radical creativity. Obviously Brooklyn Beckham, with his terrible photos and daft tatts, is far from a Beatle or a prince — but that's not stopping the narrative of helpless man stolen by a pushy woman being wheeled out again. Meanwhile, if you want to read about actual trafficking, follow the trials of Sean Combs or Andrew Tate.

Awkward: Viral song that left Monica out of sync with friend Rachel

Singer-songwriter JC Stewart has revealed how an online interaction with one Friends star led to an 'awkward' real-world encounter with another leading cast member of the iconic show. The Northern Irish artist, whose songs have clocked up 350 million streams on Spotify before he even releases his first album later this month, went viral during the pandemic thanks to Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel in the show. The actress reposted Stewart's lockdown-themed parody of the Friends theme song, I'll Be There for You – made, he said, while 'being an idiot' at home and posted on the emerging TikTok. Stewart told 'I went to bed and woke up the next day, and I've never had anything like it on my phone. I had calls from Good Morning America, The Today Show and I ended up chatting to all these people.' @iamjcstewart Just leaving these here…#fyp #friends #cover #jcstewart #isolationgames #onmyown #comedy #parody ♬ original sound – JC Stewart The acknowledgment from Aniston never went further, but the singer later ended up in the company of her Friends co-star, Courteney Cox. Ms Cox is in a relationship with Johnny McDaid of Snow Patrol, the Northern Irish band who were early patrons of Stewart's career and whom he still calls friends. But he admits Ms Cox had 'no idea what I was talking about' when he brought up Ms Aniston's enjoyment of his viral video. The acknowledgment from Aniston never went further, but the singer later ended up in the company of her Friends co-star, Courteney Cox. Pic: Shutterstocl 'It was awkward,' he laughed. Stewart, from Magherafelt, Co. Derry, said it was 'interesting seeing what that massive viral moment could look like' after Ms Aniston shared the clip, but added that it 'probably didn't change my life, long term'. He said: 'I'm like, 'You guys know I write real music, right?' I think we gained like 50,000 followers instantly, and I think we lost 45,000 of them when they all realised I wasn't a Friends account.' Yet the 28-year-old former MTV Push Artist of the Month has a hugely impressive online following, despite a relatively low profile here. A good portion of his audience is in Europe, where he plays some of his biggest gigs, including a recent thousand-seater in Amsterdam. His track I Need You To Hate Me (72.5 million Spotify plays) took off on the continent and topped the charts in Czechia – again during the pandemic. 'I remember doing all these interviews and people were like, 'You're number one in the Czech Republic this week',' he recalled. 'I was like, 'Oh sick, but I'm in Magherafelt. My Dad said I have to mow the lawn.' 'I think with the timing of it, it was hard to feel it. But I'm unbelievably grateful for it. It's pretty crazy,' he said. The piano and guitar player admits he doesn't really know why his music seems to 'resonate a lot better in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Finland', but said it is 'just a lot easier for me to go play there'. 'They just seem to get what I'm doing a bit more,' he said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JC STEWART (@jcstewart) He describes his anthemic style as 'that singer-songwriter, storytelling, doleful kind of thing that leans into pop music', with Foy Vance and Tom Odell named as influences (and also people he has gone on to work with). 'I just try and feel that punchin-the-chest moment. That's my favourite thing about music. If I can get that into a song and I can feel it, then I'm happy with it usually,' he said. He has also co-written with 'great guy' Niall Horan – albeit over a 'very patchy' Zoom call – and with Lewis Capaldi on the track Hollywood. 'I wrote that song at midnight in Ealing in West London one time with Lewis and these guys [Philip] Plested and Kane [Parfitt],' he remembered. 'It was just a bit of fun, but it turned into something bigger.' Stewart can expect to win a few more Irish devotees this month with the release of his first album, Space Hurts, followed by huge concerts in Dublin and Cork, where he will support Duran Duran and Chic. He called the line-up – playing at Malahide Castle in Dublin and Virgin Media Park in Cork – 'random enough', but said he is 'obsessed with both' acts. And it won't be his first encounter with either. He first met Nile Rodgers of Chic while doing work experience at a London recording studio aged 17. 'I've kept loosely in contact with them,' he said. 'I haven't seen them in a few years, so it'll be nice to now go and play a show with him 11 years later.' He initially claimed he is 'absolutely not' planning to join the legendary disco/funk outfit onstage but later said: 'We'll see.' 'I think that would be an embarrassment to me and everybody who knows me. I'd probably start dancing or something,' he joked. Stewart has already supported Duran Duran in Greece. 'Somebody dropped out of a show. I was on holiday in Crete and got a call like, 'Could you be in Athens in two days?' 'And I just had to scramble the band, fly them over from Belfast, and I think we played to, like, 15,000 people in Athens. It was about 40 degrees, and I honestly nearly died, but it was good fun.'
