An investigator searching for Shannon Matthews has described the moment the nine-year-old girl was found tied-up and hidden by her own mum as part of a fake abduction plot.
Missing Shannon had seemingly vanished on her walk home from swimming in February 2008, with her mum Karen Matthews crying on camera appealing for the safe return of her daughter.
After 24 days of searching, investigators found her bound and heavily drugged in a drawer in a grotty council flat just a few miles from where she had supposedly disappeared from.
Mick Donovan had kidnapped the schoolgirl with Karen in an attempt to claim a £50,000 reward for her return, even trying to extort money from the Find Madeleine McCann fund.
Detective Constable Nick Townsend was part of the team of detectives who spent sleepless nights trying to locate missing Shannon.
But recalling the moment he saw her for the first time, he revealed the team feared she was close to being seriously harmed by Donovan.
He said: 'When the lady who lived in the flat below heard the tiny footsteps of a toddler coming from Donovan's flat, I said we need to get in here.
'We made a determined effort to rouse him to get him to come to the door, but he wouldn't answer.
'My fear was then that he knew that we were here. Could he be doing any harm to whoever was in there or to himself, knowing the game was up?'
With the help of the Operational Support Unit, officers were able to force their way into the council flat, finding the 'bewildered' schoolgirl beneath Donovan's bed.
Speaking on documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, Nick added: 'You could hear a lot of banging and crashing, smashing of woodwork.
'I went up the staircase and as I got to the top, my colleague appeared from inside the flat carrying Shannon in his arms saying, 'I found her, I found her, under the bed'.'
Karen was jailed for eight years, while Shannon was given a new identity and removed from her family's care.
Dovonan was also jailed for eight years and was disowned by his family following the plot, and died in prison in April 2024 reportedly not having a single visitor in the last few months of his life.
He had insisted he was 'only looking after' the terrified schoolgirl that people 'would understand' why he kidnapped her if he was allowed to share his side of the story.

Moment light aircraft crashes into Sydney golf course

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Dramatic footage showed the moment a light aircraft crash-landed onto a golf course in Sydney. Both the pilot and the one passenger on board miraculously survived the crash at the Mona Vale Golf Course on the Northern Beaches on Sunday. The Piper Cherokee was captured flopping towards the ground during an emergency landing, sending parts of the aircraft flying as it hit the green at around 2pm local time. Onlookers rushed to check the status of the instructor and student on board, who were both able to escape the wreckage relatively unharmed. Both men, thought to be in their 50s, had minor injuries and were treated on the scene by paramedics. Flight records show the plane had left Camden and was destined for Wollangong before making the sudden landing. Pictures of the crashed jet show its starboard or right wing severely damaged, while the landing gear appeared to have come off. Keanu Turnewitsch was enjoying a round of golf with his friend when he saw a 'nice big shadow' cast over the green, before hearing a crunching sound. He told ABC news: 'All the ambulances and everything started coming past and sirens for 20, 30 minutes.' Another witness said the aircraft 'just fell from the sky', adding: 'It was crazy, we literally just heard this noise, and then all of a sudden it went bang.' It comes after a light aircraft was found crashed in a field in Staffordshire. More Trending The plane, with a broken a wing and tail was discovered in Cotes Heath near Stone on August 8. No injuries had been reported, with the plane having made an emergency landing. A spokesperson for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said: 'An accident involving a light aircraft was reported to the AAIB on 8 August. 'An investigation has been launched, and we have begun making enquiries.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Police make arrests after 'pink lady' protesters march to Britannia migrant hote

Anti-migrant protesters clashed with police outside the Britannia International hotel housing refugees in London. Police made six arrests for breaching Section 14 Public Order conditions, possession of Class B drugs, and assaulting an emergency worker. Demonstrators are shown holding placards reading 'stop the boats', waving St George's flags and letting off flares. One group of protesters unfurled a large banner with the message: 'We are NOT far right but we're not far wrong. Don't gamble with our lives.' 'Pink lady' demonstrators, a group of local mums, were seen arguing with officers outside the 4-star hotel on the Isle of Dogs in Canary Wharf. One woman, in a mobility scooter, in the road was told to move down the street. But she was seen arguing with an officer that she would push other demonstrators into the road itself. She and other protesters are heard being told to stay on the pavement opposite the hotel. A Met spokesman said: 'Conditions to stay on the pavement remain in force, with officers still present.' It comes after a court heard that a protester attempted to force their way into the hotel after an asylum seeker walked into their blind mother's flat. Channay Augustus, 22, was one of 20 people who allegedly tried to barge into the property on Wednesday evening. The asylum seeker, in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of assault, the BBC reported. Ms Augustus confronted a security guard at the hotel after seeing the intruder in the flat. Thames Magistrates Court heard she then returned to the building holding a meat cleaver, which she started banging on a metal barrier outside the hotel. More Trending She will appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 12. The latest protest comes amid a wave of similar action outside several hotels housing asylum seekers across the country. One in Epping saw another march to the Bell Hotel; some came dressed as Saxons. A protest against 'illegal immigrants' also took place today in the town of Ashington in Northumberland. Police watched on as protesters called for 'mass deportations'. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Putin general, 57, ‘has arm and leg amputated' as he fights for life after Ukrainian strike on Russian column in Kursk

A TOP Putin general is fighting for his life after a brutal Ukrainian strike blew up a Russian column in Kursk – reportedly leaving him with devastating injuries and multiple amputations. Lt-Gen Esedulla Abachev, 57, was hit on the Rylsk–Khomutovka highway in the Kursk region early on Saturday, according to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR). 7 7 7 The decorated officer – deputy commander of Russia's North Group of Forces – was urgently airlifted to the Vishnevsky Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow where surgeons amputated an arm and a leg, the Kyiv Post reported. A pro-Moscow source admitted: 'He is alive, but in serious condition [after] traumatic amputation of the arm and part of the leg.' Ukrainian forces also blew up an ammo depot in occupied Melitopol a day earlier, killing marines and fighters from Ramzan Kadyrov's notorious 'Akhmat-Vostok' Chechen unit. HUR gloated: 'There will be just retribution for every war crime against the Ukrainian people.' Bloody track record Abachev has been at the heart of nearly every Kremlin war in recent decades. He graduated from the Kharkiv Higher Tank Command School in 1989 before fighting in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the Second Chechen War, Russia's 2008 invasion of Georgia, and the terror campaign in Syria. 'For each of these 'bloody feats,' Abachev was personally awarded the Order of Courage by Putin,' reported Since 2022, Abachev has played a major role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, commanding the 2nd Army Corps of the so-called 'Luhansk People's Republic.' Ukraine cut Putin's two-pronged frontline breach in HALF in wake of Trump summit Ukrainian sources accuse him of war crimes against civilians in Lysychansk. Putin himself previously decorated Abachev with the Hero of Russia – Gold Star for 'courage and heroism.' He also received an award from occupied Luhansk for his role in the bloody takeover. In August last year, amid surging Ukrainian cross-border operations, he was appointed commander of Russia's border-cover group in the Kursk direction – where he was now taken out. Humiliating blows The strike on Abachev is just the latest in a string of humiliating Ukrainian hits on Putin's top brass. Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov – Russia's Deputy Navy Chief and another Hero of Russia – was killed in July during a suspected HIMARS strike on a command post in Kursk. In April, Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was eliminated near Moscow. 7 7 Ukrainian Telegram channels have already circulated footage allegedly showing the burning wrecks of the Russian convoy in Kursk after Abachev's column was smashed. The attack comes as Kremlin forces in Kursk push to seize territory across the border – with Zelensky facing mounting pressure to concede ground to Putin to secure a peace deal. Analysts say Kyiv is intensifying strikes on senior commanders to weaken Moscow's chain of command and sap morale on the frontline. Each successful hit is seen as both a psychological and tactical blow for Putin's faltering war machine. Has the Alaska summit helped broker a peace deal? AS Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin both flew out of Alaska on Friday it appeared as though the summit was an utter failure in the eyes of Ukraine. There had been no agreements on a peace deal as Trump appeared to be hesitant to truly reveal what demands Putin was making. But a few hours after the meeting ended Trump took to social media to reveal the meeting was a success in his eyes. Trump said Russia and Ukraine both believe a full peace deal is "the best way" to end the war - rather than a short term ceasefire. Now diplomatic sources have revealed some of the initial details of the potential agreement, according to news agency AFP. The US has reportedly proposed an agreement that would see Ukraine not join Nato - but instead be offered Nato-esque protections similar to Article 5. Article 5 on Nato's founding treaty agrees collective defense - meaning allies see an attack on one as an attack on all of them. Trump reportedly floated the plan with Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders during a call after his meeting with Putin. The US President is set to discuss the terms of an agreement with Zelensky on Monday when he travels to the White House. Zelensky did not directly address any potential plan but he did say on X: "We discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing security for Ukraine."
