Practicality of big ceiling fans queried

Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 By: Kan Yaw Chong Text Size: One of the fans already being installed. Kota Kinabalu: Ten of these big ceiling fans are to be installed in Damai Phase 4 shoplots soon after a trial run of one already installed. 'I hope my observation and concern over such proposed decision by the Damai Phase 4 Management Services Committee will reconsider this choice,' said prominent architect Datuk Ho Jia Lit. Advertisement 'My reasons are as follows: Hot air and heat always naturally rise upwards in such enclosed roof spaces. Given possible 100 air conditioners and compressors from 1 to 2 horse power each pumping out extremely hot air nonstop during office hours into these spaces and trapped in this enclosure, the installation of 10 big ceiling fans will only blow all these hot air downwards towards all the customers sitting in all those coffee shops and restaurants below, ' Ho noted. 'We as architects, with our PAM Chapter Institute office located in this Damai Phase 4, we naturally feel it would be better to install exhaust fans centralised on top of all roofing ridges, to suck out all those accumulated hot air to discharge them above the roofing spaces,' Ho said. Aseanta launches tourism awards

Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 By: Bernama, Antara News Text Size: JAKARTA: The Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta) has launched two initiatives to expand tourism opportunities in Southeast Asian countries, reported Antara news agency. 'The first is the 39th Aseanta Tourism Awards, and the second is the Discover Asean microsite by AirAsia Move,' said Aseanta President Eddy Krismeidi at the launch event held at the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta. Advertisement Eddy said the two initiatives not only reflect Aseanta's response to current tourism challenges but also its readiness to seize future opportunities. 'These initiatives reflect our determination to recover, innovate, and thrive,' he said. The Aseanta Tourism Awards, he explained, have been held for 39 editions and have long served as a platform to recognise and honour the best in Asean tourism – from community-based initiatives to large-scale innovations in marketing, sustainability, and excellence in tourism services. Registration for the Aseanta Tourism Awards is now open and will close on Oct 31,2025, with the winners to be officially announced at the Asean Tourism Forum 2026 in the Philippines. The second initiative presented at the event was the launch of the Discover Asean microsite, a digital travel booking platform from AirAsia Move, introduced by Aseanta in collaboration with AirAsia. Advertisement 'This microsite curates essential and inspiring content, from cuisine, culture, and attractive destinations to verified immigration links and the latest travel information,' he said. The application, he added, integrates tourism services that travelers need and want while also enabling easy access to flights and hotel rooms. 'In this way, intra-Asean travel becomes more intuitive, informative, and inspiring,' Eddy said. Meanwhile, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa expressed the government's appreciation for Aseanta's efforts in realising the two initiatives. According to her, both initiatives are a tangible manifestation of a collective commitment that strengthens digital innovation, public–private collaboration, and shared sustainability values to reshape the regional tourism landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? They are Safewater Asia Sdn Bhd; Yong Yu Resources Sdn Bhd; JCI Riam; JCI Jalan Tanjung Kidurong; Sibu Municipal Council; ChampSpeak (Champs Education); Kuching South City Council (MBKS); Borsa Food Sdn Bhd (YourgutBB Kuching); Timuran Kembangan Sdn Bhd; Kuching Performing Arts Association; Layar Education Development Committee (LEDC); Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak; Persatuan Wind Orchestra Kuching (The Band Lab); Taka Patisserie; The Ranee Sdn Bhd; and a coalition between Nature Resource Solutions (NRS), Kuching Urban Farming (KUF) and MBKS. At a press conference held at the Borneo Cultures Museum here yesterday announcing the Top 30 finalists, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni commended their efforts in creating tangible impact within their communities and inspiring others to follow suit. 'Being shortlisted is no small feat — it represents months, if not years, of dedication, innovation and purpose-driven action. 'This year's theme – 'Local Action, Global Impact' – is particularly fitting as small local initiatives, when replicated across communities, can transform nations and drive global progress,' he said, adding he was encouraged to see many initiatives that aligned with the ministry's vision for a greener, more inclusive and resilient Malaysia. 'In Sarawak, for example, we are working to implement the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap – long-term strategies that require not only policy direction but also the active participation of communities, businesses and change-makers like you,' he said. He urged JCI to focus on its future activities and programmes on key global megatrends and emerging risks such as climate change, economic uncertainty and the potential for future pandemics or biological threats. Other finalists from across Malaysia include Pertubuhan Amal Kebajikan En Xin Negeri Sembilan; Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine; Mins Studio Sdn Bhd; Lim and Nyu Dental Surgery; Kiwanis Club of Muar; Stellar Education Group Sdn Bhd; Universiti Malaya; JCI Kuala Lumpur Mandarin; the Ban Ning Teh Society (1954) Malacca; Collaborative Excellence Sdn Bhd; Wellspring Buildtrade Sdn Bhd; Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd; the Department of Fisheries Malaysia; and the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation. All finalists had their project submissions evaluated by a panel of independent judges, and were selected from a pool of 65 participants. The winners will be announced at the Grand Award Ceremony on Sep 21 to be held at the Imperial Hotel Kuching from 5pm to 10pm. First held in 2017, the award aims to celebrate and recognise projects carried out by companies and non-governmental organisations in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Also present were 2025 JCI Malaysia national deputy president JCI Senator Vincent Leng; 2025 JCI Kuching local president Albert Loi Wang Shieng; and 2025 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award organising chairwoman Bivi Ling Siew Chee.
