Cal HC judge praises city police for smooth traffic movement on TMC rally day

Kolkata, Jul 22 (PTI) The Calcutta High Court has praised the city police for ensuring smooth traffic movement on the morning of July 21, the day the annual Martyrs' Day rally of the ruling Trinamool Congress was held.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who had put restrictions on processions to the rally in the city between 8 am and 11 am on Monday, said that the roads were 'maintained well".
He said on Monday that the police had ensured that traffic movement in the city was not hampered.
The court, hearing a petition seeking that there is no disruption of traffic movement for the July 21 rally on Monday, had directed the Kolkata Police commissioner to ensure smooth traffic movement.
Allowing processions for the Trinamool Congress' Martyrs' Day rally on July 21 in Kolkata, the court had directed that these would not be allowed between 8 am and 11 am.
The court had directed that all processions within the Kolkata Police jurisdiction would be allowed till 8 am on July 21, and an hour would be granted thereafter for settling the crowd near Victoria House at Esplanade in the heart of the city.
Justice Ghosh directed that from 9 am to 11 am, the police would ensure there was no traffic congestion on roads leading to the Calcutta High Court and within five km of the central business district in Kolkata.
The processions would continue thereafter from 11 am, the court had directed. PTI AMR BDC

Peshawar, Jul 27 (PTI) Unknown gunmen fired at a gathering protesting against counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan's northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, leaving three dead and many injured, a top official said. NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said he has no information on the actual reason for Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President, holding that it was for Dhankhar to tell what really happened, as the matter was between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi . "I don't know all those details. He (Dhankhar) was always on the govt's side. He should say what happened," Kharge was reported as saying by news agency PTI, in response to a question on whether Dhankhar was forced to resign as he spoke in favour of farmers. Kharge was at Vijayapura in Karnataka. "When we raised several issues concerning farmers, the poor, international issues or foreign policy, he never used to give us an opportunity (in Rajya Sabha as its Chairman)," the Congress president said. "When we tried to raise issues by giving notices on issues regarding the poor, atrocities against women, Dalits and the downtrodden, and incidents like Hindu-Muslim clashes, he did not give us an opportunity. It (the reason for Dhankhar's resignation as Vice President) is between him and Modi. We don't have any information on that," Kharge clarified. Notwithstanding Kharge's stance, senior leaders from his party have, since Dhankhar's abrupt departure as VP, have been asserting that there is far more to the episode than meets the eye.

Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam official suspended for misbehaving with consumer
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) A superintendent engineer (SE) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a consumer, officials said on Sunday. Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" 'The SE of Basti, Prashant Singh, has been suspended with immediate effect for his insensitivity and indecent behaviour towards the complaint of electricity consumers. 'All other electricity officers and employees have been directed for effective and quick solution of consumer problems. Everyone should be ready for public service," Sharma said. The suspension order was issued on Saturday by Chief Engineer (administration) Arvind Nayak on behalf of the managing director of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam (PVVN). It said that Bharat Pandey, a resident of Mudaghat in Basti district, lodged a complaint with Singh over phone on July 18 about non-supply of electricity. The suspension order said Singh behaved 'indecently" with the complainant despite being in a responsible position, which fell under the category of 'misconduct". Singh will remain attached to the office of the MD, PVVN, Varanasi, during his suspension period, the order said. Accountability will be fixed from the top management of the power corporation to the field-level officials, he said. Arbitrary behaviour of any staff member hindering development will be strongly dealt with, the minister said in the statement. 'Despite substantial investments in power infrastructure – over Rs 26,000 crore in the last three years – the image of the government and the department is being damaged by the carelessness of a few employees. 'In view of the state's development needs and the rights of the consumers, such irresponsibility will no longer be accepted," Sharma said.
