Oman, UK explore means of boosting cooperation
Muscat — Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister received in his office today David Lammy, UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
During the meeting, the two ministers affirmed the joint desire to follow up all areas of cooperation and means of promoting them to serve the joint interests.
The two sides also emphasized the importance of continued consultation, coordination, and cooperation in all efforts that would strengthen the foundations of regional security, stability and peace. They also supported resolving issues through dialogue and diplomatic means, ensuring greater benefits for all countries and peoples.
The Foreign Minister underlined Oman's support for negotiations aimed at finalizing a free trade agreement between the GCC countries and the United Kingdom.
The meeting was attended by Munthir Mahfoudh Al Manthri, Sir Oliver Robbins, Permanent Under-Secretary at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Dr. Lianne Sanders, UK Ambassador to Oman.

GCC scores 41.5 in 2024 CCE Index
MUSCAT: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries achieved an average score of 41.5 in the 2024 Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) Index, surpassing the global average, according to figures released by the Gulf Statistical Centre. The CCE Index evaluates the performance of 125 countries in their transition towards net-zero emissions by measuring the integration of mitigation technologies alongside enabling tools within a circular carbon economy framework. Notably, the contribution of renewable energy plant capacity in GCC countries to global renewable energy design capacity rose significantly — from just 0.03 per cent in 2015 to 0.43 per cent in 2024. The GCC region currently operates three commercial facilities capable of capturing and storing 3.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. This capacity is expected to increase dramatically to 65 million tonnes by 2035. CCS and broader Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) initiatives are seen as critical instruments for limiting global temperature rise to 2°C and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. — ONA

New Delhi: UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his second visit to India to discuss ongoing economic and migration partnership. British High Commission said talks are on between the UK and the Indian Government to deepen and diversify the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries to deliver for working people in the UK. Bolstering economic and migration ties and delivering further growth opportunities for British businesses are set to be at the top of the UK Foreign Secretary's visit to India on Saturday, the High Commission said. The visit follows the historic Free Trade Agreement agreed between the two countries and will deliver on this government's commitment to boost jobs and prosperity. The new deal with India is expected to increase bilateral trade by over £25 billion every year, UK GDP by £4.8 billion, and wages by £2.2 billion each year in the long run, putting money back in the pockets of working people. The Foreign Secretary will also welcome progress in our migration partnership, including ongoing work on safeguarding citizens and securing borders in both countries. Addressing migration remains a top priority for the government - the Foreign Secretary is focused on working internationally with global partners to secure the UK's borders at home, High commission said. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said, "India was one of my first visits as Foreign Secretary, and since then has been a key partner in the delivery of our Plan for Change. Our relationship has gone from strength to strength - securing our future technologies, adding over £25bn in trade every year between our countries and deepening the strong links between our cultures and people." The Foreign Secretary will also meet with leading figures in Indian business to discuss how we can unlock even greater investment by Indian business in the UK. "Our investment relationship supports over 600,000 jobs across both countries, with over 950 Indian-owned companies in the UK and over 650 UK companies in India. In 2023-24, India was the UK's second-largest source of investments in terms of a number of projects for the fifth consecutive year," the release mentioned. Talks will also take stock of progress, following a commitment by the UK and Indian Prime Ministers to take forward an ambitious UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The trade deal is a key example of the progress being made since the last meeting between the Foreign Secretary and his Indian counterpart. It follows the signing of the UK-India Programme of Cultural Cooperation Agreement in May and £400m of trade and investment wins, boosting the British and the Indian economy at the Economic and Financial Dialogue in April, the British High Commission said. The Foreign Secretary Lammy is also expected to address the recent escalation in tensions following the Pahalgam terrorist attack and how the welcomed sustained period of peace can be best supported in the interests of stability in the region. The visit comes as some of India's top business leaders endorsed the trade deal, which will increase opportunities for trade and investment between the UK and India. It also comes ahead of the launch of the UK's modern Industrial Strategy, which will make it quicker, easier and cheaper to do business in the UK, it added.

Oman launches first tourist hot air balloon project in Türkiye
Muscat, June 3 The Sultanate of Oman launched its first tourist hot air balloon as part of the 'Oman Balloons' project in Cappadocia, the Republic of Türkiye, during the promotional phase of the project. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism's efforts to develop and diversify the tourism product while enhancing Oman's position as a unique regional and international destination. Salim bin Sultan al Abri, founder and CEO of Oman Balloons, announced that the hot air balloon will arrive in Oman by September, with operations starting in October at Stars Gate Camp in Bidiyah. 'Our objective is to make Oman an attractive hot air balloon destination. We plan to participate in all the tourism festivals conducted in different governorates of Oman. We would also like to have a school to train hot air balloon riders. We will also be the agents for the Pasha Balloons to be represented in other GCC countries,' he said. Al Abri emphasised Oman's heritage, unique features, nature and tranquillity, noting that hot air balloon adds entertainment and adventure to the tourism experience. The project aims to bring international expertise in hot air balloon tourism to Oman, enhancing tourism experiences for both domestic and international visitors. "Oman Balloon No 1" will begin flights from the Wilayat of Bidiyah in Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, offering passengers a unique opportunity to explore Oman's diverse tourism attractions from the sky. The hot air balloon has been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority in Oman and is designed to withstand Omani weather conditions, with a capacity for up to 20 passengers and a technical crew consisting of a pilot and an assistant. The "Oman Balloons" project is supported by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for its role in promoting experiential tourism and providing panoramic views of tourist sites. This initiative showcases Oman's natural and cultural heritage from an innovative perspective, attracting a wider range of visitors seeking unique travel experiences.
